Top 5 Comedy Movies

  1. To steal a Facebook application and to tone down the Political arguments, I thought I would ask everyone to list their five favorite comedy movies. If this has been done before, then I apologize for repeating.

    1. Airplane
    2. They Call Me Trinity
    3. The Princess Bride
    4. Wayne's World
    5. Army Of Darkness

I am sure someone will list a movie that I forgot and I might want to revise my list. I have to admit I love Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy movies.

    Blazing Saddles
    Buckaroo Banzai
Mars Attacks (for sentimental reasons -- our first date movie)
    Dr. Strangelove
    The Producers

I started with 23 -- this was hard, but fun :-)

    His Girl Friday
Young Frankenstein (given that Charla took Saddles)
    Men in Black 1
    Into the Night
    Magic Christian

And I believe Buckaroo Bonzai is a serious film and should be treated as such.

    In order of release dates:

    1. Pretty much anything by Harold Lloyd, but if I have to pick one: Girl Shy
    2. Pretty much anything by the Marx Brothers, but if I have to pick one: Duck Soup (Hail Freedonia!)
    3. The Pink Panther (although "A Shot in the Dark" is close)
    4. Young Frankenstein
    5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

    Posted 2 years ago #
  5. Lighthouse...you picked 3 of mine...wow...revising now - lol...(oh, that would be the last 3)

    Young Frankenstein
    16 Candles
    Dogma
    Zoolander
    Dazed and Confused

This is off the top of my head. I reserve the right to log back in and edit as I go through the day, slap my forehead and say, "how could I forget THAT one?!?"

JanS - I don't think there's a rule that says you can't repeat a movie. (If there is, I already broke it when I listed "Young Frankenstein"!) I'm sure that some movies will show up on multiple lists.

  8. I know what you mean. I kind of forgot Animal House myself.

Tough to come up with a list but these come to mind quickly:

    Monty Python's Holy Grail
    Wedding Crashers
    Midnight Run
    The 40 Year-Old Virgin
    Clerks

    Life of Brian
    Priscilla Queen Of The Desert
    Raising Arizona
    Young Frankenstein
    Tropic Thunder (a new favorite)

    Posted 2 years ago #
  11. Oh oh oh...

How could I forget "A Fish Called Wanda"?

And just about any film of Buster Keaton's.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  12. 1) Big Fat Liar (love Paul Giamati dancing to Duran Duran
    2) Ferris Bueller
    3) Raising Arizona
    4) O Brother Where Art Thou
    5) Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion

    Posted 2 years ago #

Isn't it time for Airplane III? ("That's exactly what they'll be expecting us to do!") There must be a wealth of new material, now that we have TSA, all sorts of new carry-on restrictions, color-coded threat levels, airlines nickel-and-dimeing you for stuff that used to be included, etc.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  15. Don't have five that haven't already been listed, but ad this one to your Netflix line up - Fido. It's the story of a boy and his zombie - fantastic!! Very funny (in a sick Shaun of the Dead kind of way!)

    Office Space
    Kentucky Fried Movie

Oscillation Overthruster? John Big Bootay??? I'm supposed to take them seriously? Just one ? -- when is the B Banzai sequel? I've waited at least 15 years :-)

Rich, this was a great unifying exercise -- there's not a single movie OR film on this list to disagree with.

I have at least moderate Anxiety because I forgot to include High Anxiety on my list. It is amazing!

Oh man, now with all the suggestions above I've been reminded, and have to add, two more -- Shaun of the Dead and Napoleon Dynamite. But I can't remove any from my original list so now it'll have to be top seven instead of five.

    LOVE THIS THREAD!

    1. Zoolander
    2. Dick
    3. Best in Show (for all you crazy dog lovers--myself included!)
    4. Office Space
    5. Billy Madison (this has been a favorite since it came out!)

    Posted 2 years ago #
  37. Thanks SO MUCH for starting this thread Rich! We've managed to create a big fat list of fun films.

    I'd also like to add:

    Rushmore
Steve Zissu and The Life Aquatic
    Bottle Rocket

    Posted 2 years ago #
  38. I stopped looking at people's answers because they all included a lot of great movies, and this challenge is for only five. So, I recount the movies that made me laugh out loud the most, not necessarily the greatest of comedies. In no particualr order:

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (up to getting to the "Big W", at least.)

    Bedazzled (1967) [very British]

    Blazing Saddles

    Brazil

    Being John Malcovich

    Posted 2 years ago #
  39. I totally forgot about BRAZIL! Although I had friends who thought I was nuts after they watched it. I love that movie.

I like these kinds of threads. It also gives me clues to order some of the flicks that I have not known about that have been posted.

Maybe every few weeks we do a different top 5?

I'm sorry but Beverly Hills Cop (the first one, the others suck) is the funniest movie ever. EVER

Airplane should definitely be on the list. Best in Show. The Jerk. Fred Willard is literally channeling Chris Mathews in Best in Show. It's almost creepy...

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is the sweetest movie. RIP Jon Candy.

    Sixteen Candles!

Navin R. Johnson: Well I'm gonna go then. And I don't need any of this. I don't need this stuff, and I don't need you. I don't need anything except this.
    [picks up an ashtray]
Navin R. Johnson: And that's it and that's the only thing I need, is this. I don't need this or this. Just this ashtray. And this paddle game, the ashtray and the paddle game and that's all I need. And this remote control. The ashtray, the paddle game, and the remote control, and that's all I need. And these matches. The ashtray, and these matches, and the remote control and the paddle ball. And this lamp. The ashtray, this paddle game and the remote control and the lamp and that's all I need. And that's all I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one - I need this. The paddle game, and the chair, and the remote control, and the matches, for sure. And this. And that's all I need. The ashtray, the remote control, the paddle game, this magazine and the chair.
    [walking outside]
Navin R. Johnson: And I don't need one other thing, except my dog.
    [dog barks]
Navin R. Johnson: I don't need my dog.

Pulp Fiction is a black comedy or dark comedy.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  46. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles; High Anxiety; and Pulp Fiction all meet my laugh-out-loud quotient. 5 is too short a list.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  47. Good Call Catlbob. Let's have even more fun and expand it to 10 and if Spinal Tap is one of the favorites, then it can go to 11.

My other 5 plus the Spinal Tap waiver.

    6. Animal House
    7. High Anxiety
    8. Trading Places
    9. Being There
    10. Bowfinger
    11. Spinal Tap
