So since we're talking tomatoes elsewhere, do we have any chance of finding potatoes this late in the game? We had to take out all the hebes, lavender, and rosemary that our winter killed and are filling some of the holes with veggies. Since we’re only doing a few this year, we’re doing our faves and forgot that potatoes should have gone in way back in March. Does anyone actually sell plants or are we SOL?

Here is what I would do.
Go to the West Seattle veggie market on Sunday. Buy a few potatoes of whatever variety you like. Cut them into pieces with a few eyes each and let them dry a little. Plant. The vendors there do not use anything on them to keep them from sprouting or poison them so are safe to plant.
I have planted this late before and gotten plenty of spuds.Posted 3 years ago # -
OMG - do. not. plant. -unless- you've got them corralled like bamboo! I planted potatoes in my garden bed 3 years ago! They are still coming up like WEEDS everywhere! I have no idea how they spread but it us just amazing they don't give up!

Wow, MargL, never heard of that - they must really like it at your house :)
Thanks, oddreality. That's what we've done before (good idea about the market though), I just thought we'd completely missed the window. I'm game to give it a try if others have been successful!

Funny thing is I did what oddreality suggested with a bag of leftover fingerling potatoes from Costco that had sprouted. I wasn't expecting them to do anything and here I am 3 years later trying to get rid of the darn things! :-D

GHO: WS Nursery is selling planter potatoes. I just put mine into the old glass recycling bin (it has drainage holes!) about two weeks ago and they're starting to sprout!

Good stuff guys, thanks! Unless they re-stocked, certainly may have, WS Nursery was out of starters when we called, but love the recycling bin idea, TVB - stealing it!
And cruiser, if I have lutefisk in MY blood, think I can grow stinky little fish in the backyard? ;)
