Please stop parking on our street. We never have any spots on our street to park our cars when we are home. Why don't you park some other place. So annoying.

Yousimc- I'm afraid that your streets not the only one that commuters park on. Avalon Way seems to have a ton of people who park on it to just use the bus stop( I watch them park when I am waiting at my sons bus stop in the am), which also enables us to park on the street if your not blessed with 2 spots in the garages (luckily we have 2).

  3. Not sure where the territorialism comes from. We do not own the parking in front of our homes and whining about it on a blog will not help.

I do not know why you think you should not have to walk as far as a Starbucks employee. Face it, you live in an urban center and you cannot tell me you just figured that out.

So, instead of whining about it, take some action. Install a drive way and park on your own property or contact the city about issuing parking stickers for the people in your neighborhood. That way if you do not live there you cannot park more than two hours at a time.

Let's face it Admiral needs more parking!

From someone who is not originally from the Seattle area and comes from a state that has more parking then they know what to do with (oh and parking spaces that are actually large enough to park in) Seattle definitely needs more parking everywhere, just not in certain neighborhoods :/

When looking for a place to live, whether it's renting or buying, then one should always check out the neighborhood. That doesn't just mean proximity to shopping, distance from work, and general security of the area...but it also means availability of parking.

Remember, it's not "YOUR" street. It's PUBLIC parking that's provided and maintained by taxpayers. If you want to maintain your own parking spot on your private property, then you'll need to pony up the dough.

We need more park and rides. Also when purchasing a house look to see if you are near a major bus route as people who are not will drive to your block and park for the whole work day and take the bus. Now Admiral can do what the Alaska Junction did and that is make it 2 hour parking within 2 surrounding blocks of major bus stops then issue parking stickers for the folks who really live there. But this is "density" baby(what city planners wanted) and a city that issues building permits but does not require parking allowances. There was a day when Seattle had plenty of parking and required builders to provide parking.

  8. These things are relative, Genessee Hill...I grew up in the D.C. area and compared to there, in Seattle we don't know how good we have it parking-wise. Why, I went to a show at El Corazon last week and it took me less time to find parking than it took me to get there!

    datamuse,

I agree. We have great parking in West Seattle. If you will look above, you will see that I was not complaining. Only teasing argiles.

Now, 'scuse me while I clean the house...

And, BTW, it is Genesee, one "s".

    Posted 1 year ago #
  10. Sorry about the extra s...I wasn't intending to disagree with you, just provide a counterexample to argiles.

Mind you, Pioneer Square on a Saturday night can be a pain in the ass, parking wise.

  11. I have a GREAT win, win situation! Tear down Alki Lumber through imminent domain and put up a cool park and ride, thereby promiting bus ridership, reducing emissions and removing blight all in one fell swoop!

Actually I'm from a little town called Galesburg, IL. Only thing it's known for is Knox College, and BNSF.

But I have been out here for a year now :).

Will definitely use the advice for when we look for a house. My Fiancee and I are a young couple and wanted some time to save for a house, Plus I have a 9 year old who would love a huge yard to play in apartment life is not the way to go for us.

    Argiles:

Love that BNSF! Great railroad! My advice is look for a house with a nice, paved alley in the rear.

    Datamuse:

Honestly, I was by no means criticizing your spelling of Genesee. Each time I write "Genesee", I have to walk to the corner and look at the street sign to make sure I am spelling it correctly!

  14. The OP didn't say what part of 41st SW...but I'm assuming it's the Admiral one. One of the problems right now in this area is the construction workers. They are parked all along 42nd SW just south of Admiral Way, and take up most of the parking spots on SW Lander, too between 41st and 42nd SW. Leaves precious little parking for the rest of the 'hood. I have clients who see me at my home (42nd SW), but luckily I have a parking spot in a lot behind my apartment building (no car at the moment). And, I have it on good authority that the SAfeway people have just recently leased the spots in the Bartell's underground, too, for the workers...impacting the neighborhood even more. Once the store is finished, parking will open up again. Looking forward to next August...

One of the biggest users of parking in that area is the workforce for Metro Market. These employees are making life miserable for anyone wanting to park near the Library, among other destinations. It's a real shame.

Genesee Hill- Lol BNSF and I have a love/ hate relationship. There in Galesburg the trains are only there to interrupt your daily outings. Thus having to take alternate routes and hearing trains all the time. Love living out here very few trains and I don't hear them here on Avalon which is so nice.

  19. If I was under any delusion that the OP was actually going to come back and read the responses to the NIMBY fart bomb they dropped and then left behind here, I might have some choice words about entitlement. However...

    Posted 1 year ago #
  20. "Please stop parking on our street."

As has been noted, it's not "our" street. It's a public street that anyone abiding by posted restrictions is entitled to park on. Your property is "your" property. Pubic streets are just that...public.

  21. How about I send the crotchety old lady down the street from us that leaves notes on neighbors cars not to park in front of her house. And before y'all get all fired up about making an old lady park and walk, she has a 3 car garage to pull into.

  22. Population of Galesburg, IL: 34,861 (per Galesburg.org)
Population density for Galesburg, IL: 1,995 per sq mi
Population of Seattle: 563,374 (Census 2000)
Population density for Seattle: 6,717 per sq mi

Yeah, Seattle's a pretty big city when compared to Galesburg. I guess if you've never lived in a big city before, it might be a bit of a shock.

Personally, I find parking is MUCH better here in West Seattle than when I lived in Chicago (within city limits), so I don't agree with the statement that the entire state of Illinois has "more parking than they know what to do with."

  24. Hasn't happened to me in West Seattle (I have sufficient non-public parking) or when I was on the Eastside...but I have received notes on my car in Seattle.

Greenlake - the "don't take spaces on our street" type of note after leaving my car for about 36 hours. Note said they would call SPD if they saw my car there again. Really? I've been meaning to park there again just so they WILL call SPD.

View Ridge - got a note and then ticketed for the 72-hr rule, even though (1) it was directly in front of the house I lived in and (2) there was no lack of parking in that area. There was only one other car that parked on that entire block, on either the north or south sides of the street. Plus, there were times I took my car to the store or such...but then parked in the same spot when returning home. Guess that doesn't count as 'moving' the car, or the nosey neighbors weren't paying attention at those times.

Don't people have anything better to do with their time?

Hopey- lol Chicago is hell but it's really the only area that may not have parking. Down in the central part of IL there is way more parking then needed. So I apologize for "more parking than they know what to do with" Plus most people in IL who don't live in Chicago avoid it like the plague or we take the 45 min train ride up to Chicago instead of the 3.5-4 hour drive depending on rush hour and time of day.

I had an officer tell me that he had every right to park ON MY BUMBER (yes there was damage to my car) because I was parked in front of his house........ Till this day that is my favorite A-Hole story. :)

yes I understand that it is a public street and I don't mind people parking and getting a starbucks or running an errand. However, there are people that park there litterally all day and work at Starbucks or commute(I know b/c I see them at Starbucks or get on the bus) and basically leave no parking for anyone who lives on the street. You would be a bit frustrated too if you got home and there were no spots to park your car. Some good suggestions though.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  28. bsmomma, would'a taken a pic of that and made some phone calls.

yousimc, I think you still do not get it. It is not up to you to mind if someone gets a latte or parks all day, that is why it is called public parking. I lived on Capitol Hill for years and many times had to drive around and around or park far away and walk home...that was the price I paid for living where I did.

Your sense of entitlement is disturbing.

Yes yousimc - it is frustrating when there's no parking near your own home. If I didn't have private parking, then I'd be hiking home during Seattle summers. Imagine, people spending ALL DAY (even on weekends) parked on "my street" so that they could walk on "my beach" and play in "my sand". Come on...get over yourself.

That's why I chose to live somewhere with non-public parking.

  33. argiles: Galesburg is also the birthplace of George Ferris, who developed the Ferris wheel.

My step mom's sister lived there when I was a kid so we visited a few times.

  34. Honestly no one in particular, Zenguy...Its just funny/annoying to see what we all complain about and how others respond. Sometimes it blows my mind. I commented after reading a number of whiny posts yesterday, the last one being this rant about people parking in public, legal parking spots. "Why don't you park some other place," is funny to me because then someone else would complain...you can't win. Sometimes I feel like we all forget about what's important and good about where we live and instead focus on complaining about things that really aren't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Not to discount others' frustrations...I get pissed about stupid daily annoyances all the time. Much of the time it just takes a little reading on here to set myself straight again and see how I don't want to be.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  35. Agreed MB, move away and see how much you appreciate what you had.

I have my own private parking space and would gladly give it up to walk five blocks home to my house in West Seattle.
