DaveBParticipantWhile I don’t normally agree with you Smitty, I do in this case.
I don’t think it will derail her from getting the nomination, but it will probably be an issue during the general election.
She’s not the first nor will she be the last. But it is pretty stupid move.
March 3, 2015 at 7:45 pm #822465
wakefloodParticipantAgreed. Whatever reason one might ponder to do it -and there really is only two or three that could apply – they’re all WAY too dumb for supposedly the sharpest tool in the shed.
Her image just took a big hit.
Hillary’s Sarah Palin moment.
Now what about those millions of missing Bush cabinet emails from Political operatives that got…ahem…deleted illegally?
Sorry, couldn’t resist. Had to toss Smitty a bone.
March 3, 2015 at 7:59 pm #822466
skeeterParticipantEven my liberal friends are outraged. And that doesn’t happen often.
I simply cannot believe someone in that position would be so irresponsible.
Are we seriously thinking she used Hotmail or GMail or something to conduct U.S. business? That’s just crazy on so many levels – transparency, accountability, privacy, etc.
March 3, 2015 at 7:59 pm #822467
seaopgalParticipantIt’s a big-time records management fail … and that’s where the blame lies. But it’s inane of Clinton (or her staff) to suggest that it’s OK because messages sent to other government accounts would be archived by the recipient. A) Obviously NOT the case for messages to private accounts, foreign accounts, etc.; and B) The sender always bears primary responsibility for message retention and archiving. (Recipients also have responsibility, but depending on the situation, such as if they are the primary or only recipient, the “keeper” of a particular project, or if action is required/taken as result of the message.)

SmittyParticipant“Now what about those millions of missing Bush cabinet emails from Political operatives that got…ahem…deleted illegally?”
I think they were using the IRS servers… :~)

skeeterParticipantMy biggest concern is a security threat. Is this phone call taking place?
Yahoo level 1 tech support: Hello, thank you for calling Yahoo. With whom am I speaking?
Clinton: Hilary Clinton
Yahoo level 1 tech support: Hello Ms. Clinon. How can I help you?
Clinton: It’s Clinton, not Clinon.
Yahoo level 1 tech support: My apologies Ms. Cliton. How can I help you?
Clinton: I have 52,461 emails on your servers, many of which contain highly sensitive material. I’d like to speak with someone in your security department to make sure no one can hack into my account.
Yahoo level 1 tech support: Thank you Ms. Clitnon. We do offer a service for just $9.99 per month that provides an extra level of security on your emails. If you have a visa or mastercard I can sign you up today…
March 3, 2015 at 11:49 pm #822470
rwParticipantProbable Clinton supporter here (certainly none of the likely Republican standard bearers). But this is a rather large old-school fail. It’s a fail not just from a public records standpoint. To me it’s an even larger concern from a security perspective, regardless what protections Hillary might have been using. Think about it: what foreign power wouldn’t chomp at the bit to hack the email of the US Sec of State? And she took responsibility for protecting against that upon herself?!! Did she also use unsecure phones?? Jeesh.
March 4, 2015 at 12:16 am #822471
wakefloodParticipantHa! Nice, Skeets.
Wonder if this is going to end like the Sony hack debacle with emails showing up randomly posted to twitter accounts or sent to media.
“Hey dollface, have you checked this pic of me shirtless on a horse yet? Pretty hot, right? What’s say you and me get together and throw back a few vodkas and see where the night takes us?”
Vlad
“Dear Vlad, I DID happen to see the pic and while your pecs are indeed impressive (especially for a despot of your age!), I’m afraid I’ll have to pass. You’re not really, how do I say it…my type?? But hey, let’s keep each other’s numbers handy and maybe we can talk Ukraine sometime?”

waynsterParticipantwell this story puts a curve in the story from the NY Times….

SmittyParticipantInteresting waynster!
I was thinking earlier that after all the bruhaha over Benghazi you would have thought this “might” have come up before, right?
Much ado about nothing, maybe.
March 4, 2015 at 12:53 am #822475
skeeterParticipantIt could happen Wake!

JeannieParticipantWakeflood for the win!
March 4, 2015 at 1:54 am #822477
JeannieParticipantInteresting that this comes out right around the Republican debacle with Homeland Security. Repubs caved, now they have to retaliate. I have to confess, I’m impressed with their strategy and I wish Dems were as crafty. Hillary is going to get plenty of sh-t thrown at her in the coming months. Let’s hope the s-itstorm flies in BOTH directions, as the Repub candidates leave a LOT to be desired.

dobroParticipantDid anyone read the NY Times article? Thought not. Right wing hit job…they know they have to start early. The article is full of speculation and innuendo and short on relevant facts. Let’s ask a couple of questions-
Q: Did she do anything illegal?
A: No. The laws and regulations regarding the handling of electronic communications among federal agencies have undergone several changes in recent years, including an amendment to the Federal Records Act that President Obama signed into law in November, 2014. The bill requires that e-mails dealing with official matters that are sent from a personal account must be forwarded to an official account within 20 days.
A September 2013 bulletin from NARA suggests federal employees “should not generally use personal email accounts to conduct official agency business.” The bulletin suggests exceptions could be “emergency situations” or on occasions where the employee is contacted through their personal e-mail account.
Both the Federal Records Act amendment and NARA bulletin took effect after Clinton left the State Department in February, 2013.
Q: Was she doing something other Secretaries of State haven’t done?
A spokesman for Hillary Clinton is defending the former secretary of State’s use of a private email account for official business, arguing her actions are not unique.
“Like Secretaries of State before her, she used her own email account when engaging with any Department officials. For government business, she emailed them on their Department accounts, with every expectation they would be retained,” Nick Merrill said in an email.
“When the Department asked former Secretaries last year for help ensuring their emails were in fact retained, we immediately said ‘yes.’ “
“Both the letter and spirit of the rules permitted State Department officials to use non-government email, as long as appropriate records were preserved,” he said.
“As a result of State’s request for our help to make sure they in fact were, that is what happened here. As the Department stated, it is in the process of updating its record preservation policies to bring them in line with its retention responsibilities.
This is an early shot across the bow to get the smear jobs started. You’ll know they’re desperate when they start trying to tie this in with Benghazi. This will blow away in a week or so is my guess.
March 4, 2015 at 8:53 pm #822480
dobroParticipantthat didn’t take long…
“House Benghazi committee to subpoena Hillary Clinton’s email”
This mornings headline. And the NYT started walking back the story today. much ado about nothing.
March 5, 2015 at 8:25 am #822481
HMC RichParticipantFunny you should say “blow” when talking about a Clinton Dobro!
I found the CREW response interesting. “That is why President Obama issued an executive order mandating that all agencies have electronic record keeping systems in place by 2016. But that will take new technology, which means money, which is why the President gave agencies several years to comply.”
More money, more money, more money. Won’t have to track as many emails if you actually cut the size of government!!!!
Needless to say. I don’t like Hillary Clinton. We can do better.
March 5, 2015 at 3:45 pm #822482
JoBParticipantthey are still looking for the smoking gun…
She already released emails pertinent to Bengahzi..
but the House wants to know whether or not she reminded her husband to feed the dog.. and what she might have told her housekeeper.. and … because after all.. they are AMERICANS and her every utterance as Secretary of State to AMERICANS has national significance…
What a bore!
March 5, 2015 at 6:05 pm #822483
JTBParticipantJust ask the NSA for the emails.
I like Hillary and think it’s unfortunate she’s under constant attack from the right wing. But I do tend to agree with much of the criticism directed at her by progressives.
March 5, 2015 at 6:36 pm #822484
JoBParticipantJTB..
don’t get me wrong.. i don’t think Hillary is the ideal.. but at this time in this place i think she is the pragmatic solution.
i am so tired of the neverending witch hunts…
a couple of centuries ago they would have simply burned her at the stake and been done with it.

SmittyParticipant“i am so tired of the neverending witch hunts…

Chris Christie
March 6, 2015 at 12:04 am #822486
JoBParticipantSmitty..
one of these things is not like the other..
Chris Christie recently settled an environmental lawsuit that had already been decided for the state for 3 pennies on the dollar..
I can’t wait to hear conservatives defend that.
March 6, 2015 at 2:35 am #822487
dhgParticipantI totally support the government’s interest in openness and transparency and I would like all official emails stored just as if they had been written letters. So, Hillary should not be using her own email server.
That being said….. what about Darth Vader???
