Angelcrest, Is this a we bring food and leave potluck or is this a bring, eat and get to know our new neighbor potluck? From the first time you posted the idea I pictured bringing food to share and breaking bread so to speak with the nicklesville community. But if it's a drop off situation I could deliver goods from the south end of west Seattle down there. Thanks in advance.

    cc,
I love the idea of breaking bread and socializing, but the numbers seem daunting. I was just going with the idea of bringing food (maybe those who deliver could hang out, too). Maybe this first one could be delivery-based; perhaps we could do another for socializing later on this summer?

Wouldn't it seem a better idea to actually socialize with the Nicklesville community rather than just bringing them dinner and running off? That would be seen as rude at any other pot luck, wouldn't it? I am not trying to demean an amazing gesture of kindness, but come on. You are willing to take the time to cook a meal for these people, but not willing to spend time actually speaking with them, that's too much?

It is an amazing gesture of kindness - but at the same time strange that you don't want to spend any time with them. If I were a part of that community, I would be extremely thankful and appreciative but to be frank and really, really honest- I would also think "Well, that was nice, but WTF? They don't want to enjoy this gesture with us? Why?!?"

    Posted 11 months ago #
  6. HunterG, I understand what you mean, but look at it like you would a Thanksgiving meal. People would be there to serve. I think that's the initial idea. It's to provide 100 people something different than what they usually have. Add more people, and it starts to get complicated - you need even more food, need more tables, etc. etc. I think we should look at this as our community giving this as a gift. People will stay to help but the food is for the people of Nickelsville.

You do have a point Jan. I do think to avoid passerby confusion it should be called something other than a potluck.

  8. Nickelsville has regular evening meetings (6PM) which are open to the public for the first part of the meeting. I sat in on a recent meeting just a couple of evenings ago, and I got the feeling that they are wanting to socialize. They are quite proud of their new community.
    .
Example, they put the date to a vote, this coming weekend on the 4th of June, where several residents quickly pointed out that the date was so close that it would be tough to get the word out in time - OR - to push the date out to a date later in the month to allow more time to prepare. There was a unanimous show of hands voting for the 18th.
    .
I remember a conversation I overheard between a couple of residents a few years back when they had an open house, when they were camped on the Duwamish - "oh no, we can't eat THAT food, that is for our guests."
    .
I agree with Hunter G that it is important for us as a community to socialize with their community. After all, we really are just one big community, and they just happen to be our new neighbors.
    .
I suggest we determine what their expectations are and go from there.
    .
And try to bring things that can be left with them for perhaps the next day's meal if there are left overs. Consider bringing disposable containers or perhaps unused containers around your house that you don't need to have returned.
    .
And to address the point made by JanS, it certainly would not hurt to arrive with a full stomach, and then we can kind of snack and socialize :) Or serve and socialize if you prefer.

I also agree that there are many aspects to this. I heard a call for food, and this has seemed to make sense in an easy, logsitic way. Perhaps someone else can plan another event? I think it's all good.

Angelscrest, you are right that could get a little overwhelming to include all of us! I am sure that whatever we do they will appriciate so much!!! I dropped off a small donation of stuff and they were so grateful. So I know a complete homecooked meal would mean a lot to them. Thank you for arranging this !!

I have spent a fair amount of time in Nickelsville and they are generous people... my feeling is that if we don't figure in food for everyone.. they are going to try to take that on themselves which kind of defeats the purpose...

I wasn't at the meeting where the potluck was discussed but i have heard enough of it second hand to be fairly certain they are thinking of this as an opportunity to break bread with the community...

i think they see this as a potluck open house.

is it too lat to up the ante and ask for more food?

As considerate guests we can always come with small appetites to cut down on the need for too many extra dishes....

i will step up for two main dishes...
2 different cold pasta salads... one 'italian" and one "midwest american"

I'm going to go with the original and accepted idea of bringing in a potluck feast. I know some of the "deliverers" will stay. Otherwise, we're looking at an open house; perhaps this will morph that way.

(Jo, are those "salads" or "mains"? Thanks! Big smile!)

    Posted 11 months ago #
  13. angelcrest..
my pasta salads are generally considered mains..
i like like to load them :)
but you can put them in any category you like..

    Posted 11 months ago #
  14. Side note.. we should work toward providing some kind of refrigeration before the 18th..
just in case the camp ends up with leftovers they are not prepared to handle...

  15. I'll be linking to this from the home page (and to the most recent updates in the forum) as soon as I get the copy written. I will keep an eye on the thread but if anything significant changes - I note the discussion here about "drop off or stay" - please let me know? editor@westseattleblog.com - TR

  16. I also thought from the get-go that this was meant to be an open house socializing and feasting potluck, not a drop off tons of food and leave; I thought it was more about feeding the soul and getting to know, as well as honoring our neighbors; thanks for organizing; looking forward to the gathering of friends

    Posted 11 months ago #
  17. all i can say is that my experience with events is that the best laid plans have a way of turning out the way those who show up want them to.

this is a good structure to build on.

  19. Hello all, I attended the public portion of the nightly camp meeting Wednesday evening (6/1).
    .
The residents are very excited about this up coming potluck, and meeting their friends. They plan on making, and distributing flyers and signs advertising the event beginning next week.
    .
Here is the official announcement from the Nickelsville Facebook page. An open group.
    .
    -----------------------------------
    .
    Potluck at Nickelsville June 18th!!!
    .
Greetings from your friends at Nickelsville.
    .
Heres our 3rd update since the return to our permanent site May 13th:
    .
We have most of the materials for the construction of our first sturdy structure.
    .
Architect Dennis DePape has given us an exciting plan and Doug Hopkirk is already assembling the tools and materials for the first prototype, like any good contractor would. Today we will begin construction and training. Nickelsville is evolving into an eco friendly village with semi permanent structures slowly but surely. We are soliciting building materials donations from suppliers such as LOWES, and our neighbor Pacific Plumbing offered us pallets.
    .
We have also applied for a small grant from the City regarding our P Patch:
    .
    a self contained, portable garden.
    .
Mark your calendar for June 18th. We will be holding a pot luck at 5 PM, which a neighborhood has volunteered to help coordinate. We will also have an open house that day (with details to follow.) You are cordially invited.
    .
This will be an opportunity for us to reach out to our neighbors and the local business so we can get to know each other. It will also be an opportunity to have our friends visit on that festive occasion. We are at 7116 W Marginal Way SW and Highland Park SW.
    .
Meanwhile, Water and bus tickets are still an issue.

    our needs are as follow:

    - Food

    - Water

    - Water barrels

    - Gasoline

    - Building supplies

    - Fire extinguishers

    - Fire wood

    - Blankets

    - Batteries

    - Trash bags

    - Hygiene supplies and toilet paper

    - Clothing and shoes

Once again, thank you for your continuous friendship and support. We look forward to our get together on June 18th!
    .

  20. I am told that Nickelsville announced a pot luck on the 18th combined with an open house on their facebook page today.

    edit...
I was wrong unless this was double posted.
this announcement was on the Nickelsville web page in the section reserved for people who opt into the Nickleville news..

"Mark your calendar for June 18th. We will be holding a pot luck at 5 PM,
which a neighborhood has volunteered to help coordinate. We will also have
an open house that day (with details to follow.) You are cordially invited.
This will be an opportunity for us to reach out to our neighbors and the
local business so we can get to know each other. It will also be an
opportunity to have our friends visit on that festive occasion. We are at
and 7116 W Marginal Way SW and Highland Park SW. "

this doesn't mean that you have to amp up the amount of food you are coordinating..

but you do need to be aware that the folks at Nickelsville really want a party as much as they want a meal.

my pasta dishes will feed 20 or so each and i will be picking up a second set of plates, utensils, napkins etc at Costco.

I will also talk with the camp kitchen coordinators to see if we can have bbqs up and running for hot dogs or something similar.

You might want to reconsider stopping by:)

i really have to take me and my fever to bed now:(

  23. Anglecrest...

what you are doing is incredible.
please forgive me if i am giving the impression that it isn't.

i just wanted you to get a head's up.

this is the pesky problem with dealing with a true democracy...

you think you have negotiated a settlement with the guy with authority
and he brings it into the town hall were it gets legs of it's own.

I haven't been down there for days because of my cold/flu but i am betting someone said..
we're going to have lots of great food... we should have a party..
and someone else said .... :)

You have been the catalyst to a good time..
feeding the soul as well as the body.

    take a bow :)

    as for all that pasta...
i come from a culture where more never went to waste at dinner time.
There was always someone unexpected dropping in for dinner.
it's amazing what you can do with a little pasta, a hunk of cheese and a can of spam...
oh wait.. that's my Hawaiian pasta.. not the midwest version..
for that you need canned ham ;->

  24. Thank you, angelescrest, and everyone else for putting this together.

I was pleasantly surprised, at our weekly Central Comittee meeting yesterday downtown, to learn that this had evolved into a full blown open house!

And yes, we are proud of our community,
and are eager to show it off (mud and all! ;-) ) to our friends, and neighbors, and to share our plans for the future.

  29. It would be really heartbreaking if we got their hopes up and not enough people contribute to make it happen. I hope people will email to contribute (I just did).

I also just posted this on my personal Facebook page in the hopes of it reaching more people in the community. Feel free to cut and paste this and share it on your own page. The tinyurl link is a shortened version of the link to this thread.

"Members of the West Seattle Blog Forum are coordinating a potluck/open house for the residents of Nickelsville (the homeless tent city that has returned to West Seattle). The potluck is set for June 18 at 5:00 p.m. and they are in need of contributions from the community for food and other items for the potluck. Can you help? Please see http://tinyurl.com/3mzdwh5 for more info."

I was thinking about this and why don't we design a poster that can be brought to the businesses to hang in their windows? Also, can we contact certain owners of businesses to see if they will organize a donation drive?

  37. We would be happy to be a collection spot for nonperishable items prior to the event and the perishables the day of for people that cant attend. I am not sure I will be able to attend due to running a busy business so someone might have to come and collect everything the day of.

We are happy to help spread awareness anyway possible just let me know.

Posters, fund raisers, etc all very good ideas but I think we should focus on getting by this event unscathed for now. A larger community drive would be great in the future, but I think a community-wide push should wait a while. The camp is still trying to get their "process" down. JoB and I have had several "tailgate discussions" at the site and we agree there is going to be a need for a "community friend" meet-up somewhere to discuss process on the volunteer side as well.

I can pick up from kelley @ muttleys, as directed by angelcrest. List is getting there, dont panic angelcrest, we still have 11 days!

    Bump and misc:

If your name and contribution isn't on this list, let Angelescrest know so the list is up to date. I suspect a lot of people will be bringing dishes that serve more than 5; the catlbob curry will serve 20 at least.

  45. I haven't chimed in on this little soiree, as I can't participate, or attend, as health things have taken an upper hand at the moment. I am so proud of you all, and my community for stepping up and doing this. We, as a community, are amazing, and there's no place better, in my book. I have extended my condolences to Mike (miws), and hopefully, if and when there's a next time, I will be able to help and participate. Way to go everyone!!!!!!!

  47. RE: the poster; a couple of Nickelodians designed a very cool poster the other day at our Central Committee meeting downtown. It even features a sketch of one of our Small Simple Structures!

Kevin has a copy of it, and I'm hoping that Scott M with Nickelsville has forwarded one to TR & Patrick via e-mail.

Getting more and more exited everyday about this!

    Mike
