The Mariners are disgusting!

Ok.. As I stated at the beginning of the year, I predicted no playoffs again and Wedge maybe the sixth Manager to be fired after the season is done since Lou left years ago. It's baffling to me how many fans are in denial. I guess every sport has and I"m no exception when the seachickens lose. The M's have one of the worst organizations period. It will be nine straight years of not making the playoffs. Chuck Armstrong and Howard Lincoln must go. Front office needs to be revamped with real baseball minds. The point is that all they care about is making sure the park draws 2 million fans a year. Sorry not this year. Fans are fans, but going to games and spending your hard earned dollar to see a pathetic product? You must have something else better to do don't you? I'd rather watch paint dry than this M's team. I'd put a bag over my head if I were the players picking up my weekly game paychecks. Alrighty I feel better now. Nothing else to bitch about..lol

Only part of your analysis I can agree with is not making the playoffs, and the Chuck and Howard meme. Aparently you haven't noticed how much more competative they have been this year, up until this most recent slowdown. Wedge won't be gone after the season, unless he quits; he is proving to be exactly the manager this team needed. The pitching has been World-class. The offense still has a ways to go, but they are obviously on the right track. There are a number of young players who are beginning to make an impression and will be stalwarts in the line-up for years to come.
All in all, I am quite satisfied with the direction the team is heading. They are absolutely on the upswing.
Apparently you weren't watching during the 80's when they truly were a directionless franchise with ZERO interest in fielding a winning team. The last few years HAVE been difficult for any Mariners fan, but they come nowhere near replicating the moribund George Argyros/Jeff Smulyan (SLIGHT improvement, though he DID introduce the moose) years.

It just seems for every strong up and comer moves (Pineda, Ackley)...they retain a couple poor sports and under peformers (Figgins, Cust).

If Ichiro would 1) move to the 3rd spot and 2) stop trying to swing and run... going to left all the time and try pulling the ball with some power...he would be more productive.

Pitching has been awesome...

They are not horrible...just a few strong bats, some experience, and $18 million away (to eat) from being good again...

I understand how it works with the fans out here though. Its not about winning or losing, its about the experience and how friendly the park is. I think the fans here are very tolerant and making the playoffs isn't all that important to them. Its the whole subdued feeling and thought of "we'll get um next time" attitude. You'd have to be a real bad coach or player to get tossed out of the organization, otherwise, you'll have cushy job. The lineup is predictable now, groundout, groundout,fly out. It goes on. The Ms can't manufacture runs nor can they come from behind if they are more than three runs down unless they get lucky. The pitching isn't awesome, its fair right now. Do we have to go into the numbers? If Felix was on a team that could hit the ball, he'd have at least 11-12 wins by now making another run at the Cy. I'm thinking that Figgins will be traded soon. He's done. The teams batting percentage is like second to last in the league. The M's take the M out of MLB.

I disagree in some respects. 1) The Ms pitching is well above expectations up to now, even Brandon League. If we had hitting we'd dominate the AL Worst.

2) Our hitting sucks especially now that our Jay Buhner-like catcher is injured. We have the aging Ichiro who is trying hard and Smoak who cannot stand alone with Ackley as Robin. We cannot trade a sub 0.200 hitter for anything with a $5MM/year contract hanging around his neck. The Ms need to look up "sunk cost fallacy" in the economics textbooks.

3) Even if the Ms somehow get another 0.300+ hitter with power they would wilt when meeting another AL team in the playoffs. So what? No one expected them to finish #1 in the AL Worst, and they probably still won't this year. While Wedge ain't great he is better than milk-toast Melvin/Wakamatsu. At least he can motivate some players to perform.

I hate that the Mariners have become the farm team for the Yankees.
Every time someone comes up and starts hitting well, or pitching good, they get sent to New York in a trade or deal.
I would think even Ichiro is getting sick of watching his pals pack up to head East and is team flounders around at the bottom of the A.L.

It may also be that Seattleites are a pretty active people....and if the team win good, if not ok too... we have lots of other stuff to do,, bike, climb, sail, hike etc. we have had our moments of great baseball but it;s not like Boston, NY, Chicago. Some of us still chaff at the stadium deal.

Cretin, you obviously haven't been paying attention to the M's for about 17 years or so, or are you still cranky over the Jeff Nelson for Armando Benitez trade in '03?
In reality, the M's haven't dealt much with the Yanks in many, MANY years.

Jiggers, your description sounds a LOT like last years team. Trust me, I know some things about baseball and M's baseball in particular; the team this year is FAR better than the one we had last year and are really fairly entertaining.
But I guess they owe you a WS, or something, so they will continue to get your poorly researched vitriol thrown at them.
At least you won't be blocking my view trying to get the wave started, or getting up DURING an inning to go get some garlic fries.

You really haven't been paying attention if you think A-Rod was traded to the Yanks. Jeff Nelson was the last meaningful trade with them. As for Bedard, we use the Yankees to up the ante so that we can pull a steal from TX, This team is better, but organizations grow in steps, not jumps. Sure, its easy to cast doubt on the obvious miss steps previous managemnet has made. But to hold a new manager who is here less than 3 months is unfair. Until fans shout down Howard and Chuck, this team is only concerned with the bottom line. Oh yes, the pitching this year is lights out. It boils down to more than wins and losses.

After losing last night to the pathetic Padres 1-0, the M's have now stayed under the total nine of their last 11 games. What does that tell you? I'll also check and see how many teams that the M's have beaten a team with a .500 record or better later this week before the all star game. Numbers don't lie.

Sunday's game update.. Mariners get bases loaded in the third with no outs, but the only way they can get runners home is on two sacrafice flies. I guess we'll take the runs anyway they can. Painful. But they are up 3-1. Let's see if they can hold onto that lead now...

People to spend their entertainment dollar the way they choose to. Engaging in a boycott of the Mariners because you don't like their performance is tantamount to boycotting the Seattle Symphony Orchestra because you don't like the new conductor. Does Jiggers suggest that people start paying $500 for travel costs to to an Oakland A's or San Francisco Giants game? Or to go to watch the San Francisco Philharmonic because they have a better product?

Smoky, you really are quite amusing.
Bedard, a really good pitcher with a very recent history of injuries is on a one year contract. If, as the two trade deadlines approach, they find they can upgrade the team by trading Bedard and the final 1.5-2 months of his contract, they absolutely should, to whoever offers the best package for him. If he isn't still on the DL, they might be able to pick up a pretty good player for him.
BTW, the pitcher of record in today's game is another prospect they picked up in the Cliff Lee trade. That is all three prospects in that trade who have made a mark at the ML level. That is one of the ways good teams are built.

Jiggers, I don't know what the overall record against +.500 teams is, but since 4/24, the low-point of the season, they are someting like 19-16 against that group.

I would like to know what you are looking for in an "exciting" team. This one plays good defense, runs the bases well, plays a generally fairly sharp and focused brand of baseball, as they need to since they don't have much offense, which is a point I believe I have already conceded. Are you missing the Kingdome days when we could go indoors to watch 4 and a half hours of baseball and have Bobby Ayala choke on a three run lead and they end up losing 13-12? Personally, I think HR derby gets pretty boring. I find tense, closely fought, low-scoring baseball to be far more entertaining.
Wedge has them playing fairly well all while integrating a bunch of young players in to the lineup. The front office FINALLY seems to be taking rebuilding seriously, and they seem to have the right people in place doing it. I'm satisfied, both because I know something about baseball and I can see improvement, and because you DON'T seem to really understand the game and you DON'T see improvement.
I'd say the M's are movin' on up!

By my best calculations, the M's are at 22-28 against teams hovering around .500 or better. This includes the very bad early record of 1-8 during a very bad start to the season. The turn-around has been sustained for over 2 months now, and I feel you are overlooking a large number of positives, but I don't want to stop you from watching the paint dry.

I am not quite certain what you mean in post #18 by "...the M's have now stayed under the total nine of the last 11 games," but if you mean they have been shut out in 9/11 games, well, that's simply completely incorrect.
At this point, I have stopped wondering WHERE you get your information, but why it is you don't bother to actually GATHER any information.

The M's play at Oakland who's worse than them right now. How many runs are going to be scored by the Mariners is the question today, and if they fall behind, can they muster up some base hits to win coming from behind? Can they hold the lead if ahead? I'm almost thinking there's going to be some runs scored today.

I believe the season is not yet half over. Teams going to the playoffs aren't usually decided this early to my recollection.

Tell this to Bob Melvin, fired at the end of the 2004 season. Or John McLaren, fired in the 2008 season. Or Jim Riggleman, who took over the team after McLaren waa fired, but wasn't hired as the new manager in 2009. Then Don Wakamatsu, who was hired in '09, was fired last year. This is not to mention all the coaches that were fired each time a manager left. Some coaches were fired before managers too, such as Alan Cockrell last year.

Many players have been released who weren't doing well, most recently Milton Bradley. I'm guessing the only reason they don't release Figgins is because he has a couple years left on his contract and they don't want to have to eat that. As far as Cust is concerned, probably he'll be released soon if he doesn't improve.

Oh yeah, they fired the GM Bill Bavasi a couple years ago too after a lot of terrible moves.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that the coaches, managers and players have any more cushy a job here than at any other team that isn't doing well.

Poor Felix can't get a break wih this team. Wedge took him out an inning to early against the A's tonight. He should have let him complete the game. He's making the all-star game on his own merit. He would definetley be up there with the likes of Holladay if he had more of a balanced team. Certainly nothings coming easy for the King pitching for this franchise. I wish I could have seen his face when League blew the save. The second half schedule looks brutal from the get go. If the M's don't improve on their leagues last place hitting percentage of .226 quickly, it may get real ugly.

Mariners lose 2-0 to Oakland this afternoon. So, what does that make their batting average now...oh .224, still the worst in baseball. A gambler loves this pathetic lineup they field. No runs scored, bet the under every game. 10 out of the last 12 games have gone under the total runs scored now. If that isn't a trend, I don't know what is. Easy money! Any excuses for todays loss? Wait! they're only 3.5 games back from first.Wieeeeeee.....

I really could care less about baseball, but after skimming here I have to ask Jiggers: are you by chance from the South-side of Chicago?

I was convinced once to go to a White Sox game a few years ago, and they lost (badly) to whoever they were playing (Minnesota maybe), and I'll tell you, those Sox fans were merciless. They even had t-shirts and hats in the parking lot saying the equivalent of "White Sox Suck" and much more colorful variations. Rough crowd.

LOL..no chrisma. I'm not a WhiteSox fan nor anywhere near from Chicago. I was a Dodgers fan and look how aweful that franchise has become. Frank McCourt ran it into the ground. The Dodgers will bounce back with the right owners because they have a brand name. The Mariners never had that kind of success, but I understand how it works out here with the fans as I stated in post #5. I'm also sure that there are a lot fans who care not to talk about this organization but side with me as well.The M's take the M out of MLB

given the choice of a baseball game and watching paint dry, i'll take the latter any day. i don't care if it's the mariners, the yankees, or whoever the hot new team is. bunch of overpaid fat dudes chasing a little ball around a field - maybe for a minute - for corporate profit. "look at me! look at me!"

I'd love to explain my devotion to the game someday RB. It is really quite engrossing. Not looking to create a convert, just dispell some of the myths which even YOU perpetuate (I've been led to expect more, RB. I am VERY dissapointed in you!)

Seriously Jiggy, I absolutely have conceded that they have problems on offense, but your blanket statement WITHOUT ANY supporting analysis that the M's suck across the board and aren't competitive is completely without merit.
Sure, I would like to see a few more blow-out victories, or at least a couple fewer tense situations in the 9th, but the facts are, when the M's have a lead in the game, they rarely give it up.
Too bad you can't see the improvement. I guess your self-righteous indignation that they would insult you with their play, and not have any championships to point at, prevents you from seeing the seriously improved on-field performance, not to mention the positive steps Jack Z. has made to improve every aspect of player development in the franchise.
Too bad. For you.
I'll keep enjoying the good baseball, and when they DO win the WS, it will be that much more meaningful for me.
You, on the other hand, will only see it as your birthright, and will probably be bitter that it took so long.
