Are there any entomologists out there in WSB land who can tell me what this beetle is and why – almost overnight – I have been seeing them in just about every corner of my house?

Christopher...about how long is it from stem to stern?
I started to look at pages dedicated to the ID of beetles, with lots of pictures...it gave me the willies - lol...I guess you have to do that yourself...hehehe
Ringo?
Looks like a vine weevil (http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/vineweevil.htm). They are typically garden pests, not house pests. Have you thoroughly checked any houseplants to see if they are setting up shop there?

What's That Bug? might be able to help, though it does look like herongrrrl is correct.
Thanks all. Funny, but I haven't noticed any in my garden at all. My house is only a few years old and is built very tight. I've found no fewer than six of these guys crawling on walls and floors in just the past week alone.
Clean green? I keep mine in a open brown bag with newspaper to absorb moisture (aerobic vs. anaerobic degradation--I can tell you which is worse) and so far just gnats...
Not just you... I've found a few in my place too
