To all the clerks, shopkeepers and other shoppers who tried to make polite small talk or otherwise engage me tonight as I ran some errands that absolutely HAD to be run, thank you. Thank you for trying, and thank you for being gracious when I didn't respond and may have seemed rude.
My dad died on Wednesday night, and while there are certain things I can't skip doing, I just don't have the wherewithal to talk or to wish you a merry christmas in return. It's all I can do to say "thank you" without breaking down into a sobbing mess.
Here I can say it, regardless of the tears streaming down my face. So, thank you.
