suspicious door-to-door on Alki

I live near 53rd & Alki and just had a suspicious encounter on Bonair Place. A white male, young to mid-twenties, baggy blue jeans, red flannel shirt, and worn snowboard-type cap, carrying a white 3-ring binder with a map of west seattle (with the alki area highlighted), approached one house on Bonair. After no answer, he skipped an apartment complex and like 6 other houses and then went to the bottom floor of another apartment building and approached 2 or 3 apartments. Then he walked back down teh street briskly, carrying his hat, revealing brown curly-ish hair. Then, like 4 minutes later he appeared in front of my house, looking at my neighbors, took some notes, and then went up my neighbor's steps. At the same time, I came inside to call the non-emergency line cuz this just didn't seem right. He clearly wasn't interested in going to everybody's house, and if he really wanted to speak to someone, he knew I was home... Anyway, I called the non-emergency line but it was so confusing that I ended up being disconnected.

So heads up to anyone in the area.

If its the kid that came to my house, he is fund raising for the United States Mission, which is basically a private half-house type place that is designed to get people off the street. He was a pretty rough looking kid, but not in red, rather a plaid shirt. Tall guy with several tats and a very southern accent. Before I donate, I always google, making them wait outside. It appears legit.

You're right, it was definitely plaid. And thanks for the info... makes me feel a little better. Although it still makes me wonder why he didn't come talk to us, since he saw me walk inside.

  4. I apparently found a great way to get rid of solicitors - at least the ones trying to sell windows door to door, which is happening with greater frequency. Last night some window reps came to my door. I said "I'm a renter" - the words were barely out of my mouth before they were walking back down the driveway. It was like I had the plague. :) I urge you all to try it, even if you're not a renter - it sure gets rid of them quick!

  5. The window salesmen don't want to talk to you unless you own the house, that's unquestionable. I had a similar experience, they wanted to do tests on my house to see how much heat I'm losing through my hundred year old single pane windows ("a lot") but when the salesman found out they're not really _My_ windows he wanted nothing else to do with me.
The alternative to that is if you do rent, hold off telling the window guys that for as long as possible, even going as far to schedule future consultation, in order to drive home the fact that door to door sales are annoying and a waste of everybody's time.
