Today at about 12:30 pm I noticed a young guy, slight build, wearing dark sweat pants, lighter hoodie, with a light blue print bandana covering his face loitering in the alley between 49th and 50th between Admiral and Waite. It's not like we are on high smog alert today so why the bandana on his face??? He was lingering behing the neighbors garage. I opened my window that faces the alley and made noise to let him know he was being watched. A few miniutes later I saw him leave his spot and start walking north in the alley. I think a neighbor down the alley came out to confront him and that's why he took off.
I left a bit later and kept an eye out for him to see if he was still in the area. Saw that he had made his way to the eastbound bus stop on 49th and Admiral. He was not wearing his bandana covering his face while at the bus stop. Would the cops respond to a call about bandana wearing sketchy acting guy in the alley? Seemed to me that he was casing houses to see who was home or not.

    Yes please call the cops!

I live not too far from there, and several months ago I saw a suspicious-seeming person peering into the windows of a house. I called the cops and less than 5 minutes later I saw them driving down my street.

    Please call them asap!

I should have done that at the time I saw him earlier today. From your response, now I know that the cops do respond in these sort of situations. Hopefully, this guy won't be back but if he does show, I will call immediately.

maplesyrup: You were lucky to have them show up within five minutes. I haven't had such luck. Two nights ago during dinner we saw a young man walk around our fence in the back yard that faces the alley and briefly look into our trash can. I yelled out to him "can I help you with something?" but he just kept his head tucked down and appeared to be using his cell phone. He then proceeded to continue further onto our property and disappeared from view between our fence and a truck we have on a car trailer. My fiance' went down there to have a look and found the guy sitting on the car trailer (again, this was inside our fence and on our property). The guy got up and said "my bad" and went and sat on the guard rail in the alley, right at the end of our driveway. I yelled down to him that he needed to move on and that I was calling the police. He blatantly ignored me as I called 911. About 10 minutes later I watched him climb the fence in the alley that leads to an apartment complex behind us and disappear. Police finally showed up about an hour later and he was long gone. They informed me that this was a car prowl and to be sure to keep our stuff locked up...

That's too bad. I think a lot of times it has to do with the availability of an officer in the area.

I had to call for another reason a few weeks ago (non-emergency) and the 911 operator told me that they were finishing another call and would be over in 15 minutes. That's right about when they showed up.

In any case you should still call though, right?
