RarelyEverParticipantI’m not sure which year the change happened, but I’m having a hard time getting used to the WS Street Fair being now advertised as the WS Summer Fest.
I’ve talked to many locals over this past weekend, and we all agree – bring back the West Seattle Street Fair!
Probably not one of those life-changing posts, but I’d be interested in seeing what some of you “regulars” think about this. :)

HelperMonkeyParticipantit’s always been “Street Fair” to me (here since 1992) – and nothing the junction association has to say will change that for me! :) Viva Street Fair!

SueParticipantLooking back at old posts here on WSB, it looks as if it’s been called Summer Fest since at least 2007. I moved to WS in 2006, so I’m kinda used to that. Doesn’t really matter to me what it’s called, I suppose.

sam-cParticipantCall it what-ever you want to call it !
:)
Regardless of what it is officially called, my husband has always called it “Junction Days”
I have no idea where he got that one but that is what our family calls it.

WSBKeymasterA woman browsing T-shirts at the Info Booth this past weekend was wearing a shirt that read West Seattle Summerfest 2006. (sic – it’s now Summer Fest)
I don’t know if the name changed that year, or earlier, but it traces back at least that far. Some of its evolution involved a comment discussion here on WSB in our early days – March 2007, Dave Montoure was chairing the festival-planning committee, and asked us to ask for suggestions: https://westseattleblog.com/2007/03/think-summer/

singularnameParticipantGreat thread! Combines all my interests in history, etymology, and anthropology.

miwsParticipantI used to have at least a general idea of when the transitions from Sidewalk Sale, to Street Fair, to Summer Fest happened but no longer recall.
I know I had trouble with the transition from S. Sale to S. Fair, and continued to refer to it as S.Sale for a few years or so. Part of that may have been sheer stubbornness. I believe the transition from S. Fair, to S. Fest, was much easier, and I probably only continued to think of it, and refer to it, as S. Fair for only the first year or so.
Perhaps by then my stubbornness had eased, and I had largely overcome FSS, (Fist Shaking Syndrome).
However, there are at least two things that will forever continue to trigger an FSS relapse; The Coliseum, and the Bon Marche.

RarelyEverParticipantThanks for the link, WSB! Interesting to look back. Strange, I really thought the change over to Summer Fest was a lot more recent than 2007 (or even earlier). Time flies, I guess… :)
However, still going to call is Street Fair, and I know quite a few folks who will, too.

jissyParticipantWhat HelperMonkey said- Born and raised here since 1971 – it will ALWAYS be the street fair for me!
July 14, 2015 at 12:54 am #825826
miwsParticipantOkay, just for that, I’m gonna go back to shaking my fist and calling it the Sidewalk Sale! ;-)

AdmiralJanewayParticipantI still refer to it as the Street Fair. And this Saturday is the Hi-Yu Parade.

me on 28th Ave SWParticipantI have only recently started calling it the street fair instead of the sidewalk sale 80% of the time. Check back in 2030. By then I might be calling it Summerfest.
July 14, 2015 at 2:56 am #825829
jissyParticipantYES, Admiral Janeway, it IS indeed the Hi-Yu parade!!!!
July 14, 2015 at 4:33 am #825830
dmkParticipantI am with Mike and Me on 28th, it was hard to get past calling it the sidewalk sale, I now refer to it as the street fair and seriously didn’t notice the name changed to summer fest. I still say Hi-Yu parade too. I really am getting old! :)
July 14, 2015 at 4:50 am #825831
WSBKeymasterI think you guys are joking but it isn’t the Hi-Yu Parade, for anyone new in town who pops by here and gets confused. You can certainly call something whatever you want, and I can appreciate the sentimentality, but if people are searching for information on the Hi-Yu Parade … they’ll be lost.
It’s been the West Seattle Grand Parade for a looong time. Hi-Yu does not organize it (though their float is always an entry in it); West Seattle American Legion Post 160 did for quite some time, but now it’s a production of the Rotary Foundation. (Yes, we know it WAS the Hi-Yu Parade for like forever. I’m just mentioning this for new arrivals’ sake.)
Just came back from this year’s lineup meeting and will have lots of *West Seattle Grand Parade* previews throughout the week. See you there! – TR

trickycooljParticipantI tend to say Street Fair because apparently after living in and going to UW for 4 years and Northgate for 5 years every festival is the Street Fair because the U-District Street Fair is my first love. Kidding. Sort of.
July 14, 2015 at 2:38 pm #825833
miwsParticipantYeah, I was actually kidding about “Sidewalk Sale”. ;-)
And in thinking about it, I think I actually prefer “Summer Fest” over “Street Fair”, as the latter seems so ubiquitous among other communities, and unoriginal. (Not that the former is much better in regards to either of those two points).
But, “The Bon Marche”, and “The Coliseum”, I am totally serious about.

GinaParticipantJunction Merchant’s Sidewalk Sale. Because the streets weren’t closed and it was a battle to get down the sidewalk.
Still called the HiYu parade to me. Northwest Art and Frame still gets called HiYu art store.
Official, formal names vs popular names that stick are interesting.

trickycooljParticipantmiws – I totally thought Sidewalk Sale was legit! I mentioned it to a friend who came over from the U-district and he thought Sidewalk Sale was more accurate than Street Fair or Summer Fest. I think he was kind of annoyed thinking it was U-District sized which is 10-12 blocks long. But his favorite vendor, the air plant guy was here so that helped. And Matador being 21 and up and shady helped. :)

JanSParticipantwasn’t the sidewalk sale on Thursday, and then the street fair (now summerfest) started on Friday? I still call it the street fair, and, having been here 40 years now, I call it the Hi-Yu Parade. But , then, I, too, remember when it was held on a Friday evening, as a sort of Torchlight parade, and when they had the budweiser draft horses pulling the wagon, and different equine entertainers from Eastern WA were in it. It certainly has changed since then. I live near Calif. and Lander now, and stay at home and simply listen to the marchers, the bands, the motorcyclists, as they practice for a few hours before they start.

JanSParticipantand, Gina….I remember when Hi- Yu Art was in the block to the north, same side of the street….nostalgia….( for that matter, does anyone remember when Phoenicia was in the junction around Mashikos location now>
July 14, 2015 at 11:31 pm #825838
CaitParticipantI don’t know anyone who grew up here who calls it Summer Fest. To me and mine it’s the Street Fair and I doubt we’re changing our ways now lol.
