Stores/Businesses Needed in West Seattle

  1. We've lived in West Seattle for a couple of years now, and are transplants from Ballard. We love West Seattle (3 generations of my family lived in WS before me), and I don't think we'll ever leave.

However...we have noticed a few things missing here, and my wife & I have thrown around ideas of things WS needs that it doesn't have.

So here's a list, and let me know if there's some secret place that we just don't know about yet that we should try out!

    - Great burger joint (semi-fast but really good quality food)
    - First run movie theater with at least a few screens
    - Car wash (Brown Bear-ish)
    - French bistro

Any other ideas? Keep them coming...

  2. if you don't mind the drive to White Center, Zippy's is wonderful...great burgers (just don't go today, they're closed for a water heater repair). We have numerous other places that serve a great burger...Elliot Bay Brew Pub, for one, Circa, for two (and you can get them to go). If you're talking a Dick's, or a Red Mill, afraid you'll have to go elsewhere.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  3. Yeah, I'm thinking faster than Elliot Bay or Circa - both are good, but something that you could be in/out of in 20 minutes.

Never been to Zippy's, but heard great things. We're in the Northern half of WS, so 15 mins is a long way to drive for a burger.

    Adding to my original list:

    - Donut shop (think Top Pot)

The Original Bakery on 45th near the Fauntleroy Ferry has amazing donuts. But you'll have to get there early, because that's well known in these parts.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  5. dyn...are you asking for places that have burgers to go specifically?

    Posted 3 months ago #
  6. I'm thinking a shop like Red Mill or In-N-Out minus the drive through...

    Posted 3 months ago #
  7. Counter service to be specific. For anyone from Northern California, think Taylor's Refresher (now Gott Roadside).

Zippy's is well worth the drive from North Admiral. Really, it is. Get the number 11 if you like a little kick in your burger.

You are out of luck for a first-run movie house. I agree with you on that one. Was hoping one would go into Westwood Village but no such luck.

Car wash? For $7.95 it is hard to beat Costco which is not West Seattle but is only a few miles away.

French Bistro? Hmmmmm. . . . . .French Toast = Meanders, French Fries = Jak's or the former Spring Hill (cooked in beef fat), French sounding bakery = Bakery Nouveau and of course just a few letters away from French Bistro is Fresh Bistro but an actual French Bistro. . . . .not aware of one.

  9. What? A branch of Sven & Ole's Lutefisk Emporium isn't on your list? ;-)

Hard to believe 15 minutes is "too far" to drive to Zippy's.

Fresh Bistro isn't exclusively French but their menu items are definitely French-inspired. I don't see an exclusively French place doing well in WS unless it was tiny. (But I could be jaded right now.)

Circa does have great food, though (never had a burger there but their other stuff is great). Call it in and get it to go!

    Posted 3 months ago #
  11. I find it hard to believe that any burger is worth driving round trip 30 minutes for. I'll have to make the trek to Zippy's and see if its worth it. Regardless, northern WS needs a good burger joint.

And Mike, Ballard no longer longs for lutefisk. It is now filled with yuppies, hipsters, luxury apartments, and foreclosed condos. And old Swedes are probably outnumbered by Benzes by at least 10 to 1.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  12. You had a great burger joint but it just closed. It was called Porters or Porter House or something like that, next to the Admiral Theater. Is Heartland still open? They SHOULD produce a great burger but something isn't quite right there. They need to step up their game.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  13. MaryCooks - you're right that the French Bistro would need to be small. Probably 15-20 tables. And it would need to be either right on California or darn near it.

Fresh Bistro is great, but it is not French. I'm thinking a traditional French menu - coq au vin, cassoulet, steak frites, seafood, you get the idea.

But if the food was great, and they had a good wine list with reasonably priced French and Northwest wines, it would do well.

Portage on Queen Anne, doubling the size would fit the bill perfectly.

And why on earth couldn't someone develop one of those old Huling properties near the Junction into a nice movie theater with parking? It's not like we don't have plenty of land right in the middle of WS right now.

I was looking at commercial listings for a while and kept seeing the Admiral theater up for rent/lease-not sure if it cause I also saw the old Safeway building on 15th in White Center that has long been redone! But if it is that would be a great place to 'posh' up.

I bet we could talk Zippys in to a North end joint......

Donuts-you just can't beat the Original for that-there is however too many cupcake shops...

    And wasn't Ovio French???

There was a French bistro on alki for a short while about 5 years ago. I had some delightful lamb chops there, but it was short lived. I can't recall the name but it was where Pegasus is now I think.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  16. An update to the Admiral is definitely in order. But I'm not sure if the economics of a theater like that would ever really support having a great little first-run house.

We had a great little theater in Ballard - Majestic Bay - one of the nicest small theaters in Seattle, and it always had the best movies playing. But...I don't think it ever made any money. I think the family who owns it just likes owning a theater and has so damn much money that they didn't really care if it made a profit.

But seriously, why couldn't AMC or someone bulldoze that big piece of Huling property across from Les Schwab and build a nice 5-6 screen theater? I'd go there all the time. I bet most everyone in WS would too, as the only other choices are going downtown and paying for parking, or driving 20+ minutes to Southcenter, Bellevue, or Northgate.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  17. I think a little French Bistro would need to be on California, north of Morgan to work (preferably north of Alaska). It's clientele would avoid Alki during the summer because it's too busy and too hard to park.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  18. The alki place was called chez million or some such thing. It featured a local celeb chef and a ny chef and served foie gras.
It was very pricey with a horribly cheap ambiance. I do not patronize places that charge $20+ per entree served among shabby chic.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  19. West Seattle desperately needs a KatsuBurger! I love the existing one, but I'd like another one somewhere in the Admiral or Alaska junction area. Nori fries with wasabi mayo! Yum!

    Posted 3 months ago #
  20. well, i suppose we don't want to be Ballard, or Queen Anne...they already exist. We are what we are. There are so many good places to eat here, I don't miss a Red Mill chain or an In-and-out burger chain...that's for other places, not here. Yes, call Circa before you go, drive by, pick it up, eat it in your car. And Zippy's? Best burgers in the NW..well worth the drive..and then go over to Full Tilt for dessert. Want fast food? Jack in the Box...

    Posted 3 months ago #
  21. Take some constructive criticism for goodness sake. West Seattle is great but not perfect. There are some thing better about Ballard or QA. And some things are better here. On balance, I'd rather live here, which is why I do. But don't get your panties all in a knot when I suggest that WS is missing a decent burger joint and a French restaurant.

Seriously. The post was designed to create a list of new shop or business ideas to make the place we all live better. If you don't want to participate, butt out.

We need some kind of Woolworth's, Mott's five and dime, general store type store in the junction. Maybe with a sandwich and coffee counter.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  23. And White Center is NOT West Seattle. So a great burger joint there fulfills a WS need about as much as a great burger joint downtown does.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  24. Sorry, dyn, but West Seattle extends a lot further south than Alaska & California. Those of us in the southern half of West Seattle are quite fulfilled by Zippy's.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  25. Is West Seattle so small that it can only support a single burger joint that is not even in West Seattle?

That's ridiculous. The northern half needs a burger joint.

Heartland makes a good Juicy Lucy, a cheeseburger with the cheese inside the hamburger patty.
I suggested they should add Cincinnati chili (5 ways) and a "proper" Chicago hot dog to their menu.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  27. Hey, I drive (or bike) to the north end for a bagel. And West Seattle starts just a block north of Zippy's. (Yeah, y'all could use a to-go place up there, though. Best burger in the north end is at Jak's for my money, but it's not a grab-n-go sort of place.)

We could use a good general sporting goods store. I love Cycle U for biking and West Seattle Runner for running, but it'd be nice to get boxing gear and sports bras without going downtown or to Southcenter. (I hate Big 5 and will never go back there.)

When I was house shopping in the late 90s I narrowed it down to Ballard or West Seattle. I'm glad I picked West Seattle. Change is inevitable but what Ballard has turned into is just depressing.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  28. When I first moved here, I thought it odd that some people seemed to look to the South for, everything. That is pretty much what we do now. Great BBQ? Try Barry's BBQ on Ambaum. Great burger at a sit down joint? The 909 in Burien.

'butt out'? wow, that's real neighborly of ya, dyn99. Is that the WS equivalent of Uff Da?

    Posted 3 months ago #
  30. wow..thanks...butt out...really? I was just trying to be helpful. I suggested a number of places, but you want something that doesn't exist. There are many tasty burgers in West Seattle. And, for the money, Zippy's is wonderful - here's the menu... http://www.zippysgiantburgers.com/menu.html . It's your choice to not go there. But you'll get hooked if you do. You mentioned In and out Burger. I can't see anything opening like that here. I can't see a location that would fit the bill. I've never been, but Jonny Boston's on Calif. Ave. near Genesee has burgers. I have no idea how good or bad they are. I do know that they have said they will be closing soon.

I agree that Jak's makes a great burger. If you go to Happy Hour in the bar from 4:30-5:30pm, it's 5 bucks...a deal, for sure, but you won't be in and out in 20 minutes.

    Now...everyone play nice :)

    Posted 3 months ago #
  31. Hey dhg, thanks for the Barry's rec. I am currently getting my BBQ at Morningstar Deli in Highland Park. I know "some of the best I've had in the PNW" ain't saying much, but it really is very good.

And, geez, dyn99, seems like people WERE participating...I thought *I* was cranky.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  32. we could use a good sub sandwich shop up here in the Admiral District, too. I wish the guy who owns Tat's Deli in Pioneer Square would consider a location maybe in that new building that houses Menchie's and Umpqua Bank. For that matter, why not a Zippy's North :)

    Posted 3 months ago #
  33. I actually checked out Zippy's menu yesterday after I got the first response on it. It does look great. It needs some slightly healthier options (like an option for grass-fed beef and a salad or two), but it looks like exactly what we need.

I'll retract my "butt out" statement. Sorry Jan. It just ticks me off when people become so neighborhood-centric that they can't even consider great things that are in other areas as things we could benefit from here. We do have some great places to eat in WS. We also have some really crappy ones. Giving Jack-in-the-Box as a suggestion is crap and you know it. If you've ever been to In-N-Out, you know that their burgers are easily the best fast-food burgers out there and in a category of their own.

If Zippy's wanted to open shop up here, I would guess they'd make a killing. Especially since they clearly have a loyal army of followers in the Northern half of WS.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  34. And Jan - nice suggestion on the sub shop. That could definitely work here. Let's keep the ideas coming.

I'm probably the ONLY person in this part of town who doesn't swoon over a zippy's burger, but they just don't do much for me. Skylark Cafe has a decent burger (and sliders) that could be ordered for takeout. Not too far from you if you go down Admiral and head under the bridge to the Delridge turnoff.

Cassoulet: best in town is at The Swinery, if they're still making it. I haven't been in there in a few months at least. Bakery Nouveau does the basics, but mostly bakery items. I agree we could use a little french place. Thinking of the one on 65th in Ravenna(ish) that does AMAZING crepes. I'd be there all the time if we had an equivalent.

What do I wish we had? Tex-Mex, Korean food, Hawaiian,

... and I wish Meander's were open at 5am so we could go before work. But that's asking a lot for a one-woman show!

    Posted 3 months ago #
  36. hehehehe..healthy options at Zippy's...ummm...it's a burger joint, plain and simply. Knowing the owner, I'm betting he will leave those salads for someone else to supply... :)

    Posted 3 months ago #
  37. I have never been to an In and Out...being as they're not in WA state. I don't travel much, so only know what we have here.

To reply... keep Ballard in Ballard. This isn't Ballard, nor, I don't want it to remotely be close to Ballard. You should have stayed in Ballard. West Seattle has no room for new buildings and yahooo's. Business'will have to wait until other tennants have moved. The Rocksport makes decent burger 24/7 and is fairly fast so there you go.

One of our favorite places for a burger is Endolyne Joes. We always mean to try other things, but their burgers are excellent and we have had very good luck having it cooked perfectly (I like mine medium rare and that’s often hard to get) so we tend to order it over and over. They are located next to The Original Bakery and are near Lincoln Park and the ferry docks.

  40. Dyn99: as you start to use the forums you will come to see that it's best to keep it mellow. Don't let Jiggers bait you. These are your neighbors and you're likely to meet them face to face at an infrequent ws forum social.

Datamuse: Barry has a real interesting history working in advertising before he started his joint. He'll talk about it if you ask. His plates of food are ridiculously large.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  41. Berry's BBQ is indeed awesome. I worked with him back in the day, and he is well worth your patronage. He'll also tell you stories about when Anna Faris was our summer receptionist.

I must say I'm over Zippy's. The burgers are still good, but the last time I was there it wasn't all that busy and we waited nearly 40 minutes for our burgers. I don't think their output can support the size of their new location. For those familiar with it, I think a "Five Guys Burgers & Fries" would fit nicely in WS,

    Posted 3 months ago #
  42. Jiggers - my family has lived in WS for four generations - since the early 1940's. Although I've only been here for two years, I grew up 5 miles south of here, and frequented it as a kid.

My great grandparents lived here for 40+ years. My grandparents raised their kids here, owned property and started businesses here. My parents opted to raise us in a slightly more suburban setting, and after a few post-college years in Ballard (which is a great place to live when you're in your 20's by the way), I moved here to raise my family.

You're going to have a very hard time telling me that I should go back to Ballard. It sounds more like you should go back to the 1950's instead.

I have never advocated mass destruction of our traditional neighborhoods in favor of monstrous condos and townhouses. In fact, my house is 103 years old. With no plans to be "ballardized".

What I did advocate was a decent burger joint less than 15 minutes away. And a movie theater.

There is a massive amount of vacant real estate in central WS currently. There will never be another car dealership moving into that land. So we might as well advocate for the kind of development that benefits those of us that live here.

If you don't want a movie theater, or other smart uses for the property that benefits the current residents, then you're going to get apartments and condos that make you feel like you live in Ballard.

The real estate is too valuable and too close to downtown to just sit vacant for another 50 years.

We might as well encourage people to start businesses that would benefit us instead of pretenting that we're still in the middle of the baby boom.

Stop fantasizing about yesteryear and start dreaming up things that will make WS better.

I only like the fries at 5 guys burgers. Otherwise, they are way too expensive. Don't need another chain joint in the area. I'd rather support an independent owner.

  45. Hey guess what? West Seattle used to have a French restaurant and it FAILED. Two French restaurants, iirc, failed in the same location. It was where the Blackboard Bistro is now. I don't think West Seattle wants a French restaurant.

Similarly, if North Admiral doesn't have a counter burger joint, it's probably because North Admiral doesn't need one. I am your neighbor and I drive down to Zippy's for my burgers.

The attitude that says 15 minutes is "too far away" is the same attitude that my Eastside acquaintances give me when I invite them to come visit -- it's too far! It takes too long to drive there! Really? How provincial.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  46. Hopey, I never had the opportunity to enjoy any of the French restaurants that pre-dated Blackboard. I'd be curious why they failed. Blackboard seems to be doing well. I would suggest that's because they have great food and a good atmosphere. I think a French restaurant that had similarly good food would do well. We go to Blackboard regularly, and love it.

I also never advocated anything in N. Admiral specifically. I referred to the "northern half of WS". I probably would have drawn my "boundary" of the northern half a little south of Junction, but looking at a map, it's a little further south - almost to the Morgan junction.

One of the reasons I moved to the part of WS I did (which is actually NOT N. Admiral, it is simply in the northern 1/2 of the peninsula) is that we can walk to the Junction from our house, or drive to the Admiral or Morgan junctions in about 3 minutes.

Honestly, the idea that you should shop and eat close to home is a pretty good one. I think the eastside is "too far away" to warrant going there for almost anything. I'd much rather stay closer to home.

And get a really good burger at a place with counter service and a side salad! Ha!

  47. The Huling property...is it the one on Fauntleroy you're talking about? With the huge parking lot? That's taken...Trader Joe's. Well, Trader's Joe's someday - lol..it's slow in coming about, but it IS coming about :)

    Posted 3 months ago #
  48. Sacatosh - Spring Hill is going Hawaiian BBQ style - it will still be a bit pricy, but might be up your alley.

You don't like the Tex Mex options we have? Cactus and Matador are decent (not great, but fine). We've never been to Mission, but the menu actually looks pretty good. It might be worth a try...

    Korean would be great.

I think we could use an Italian Trattoria too. Angelinas and La Rustica are great, but it would be nice to have a place that's a bit more traditional than Angelinas and doesn't cost $100+ like Rustica does.

    Posted 3 months ago #
  49. Jan - The Southwest corner of Fauntleroy and Alaska - just south of the gas station. It's just sitting vacant. I think it was the old used car lot of Huling's dealerships. It's a big site, and would fit a movie theater perfectly.

Zippy's is great, never frozen and ground daily. It may not be grass fed but it's high quality for sure and you can tell by the taste.
I've been to In n' Out in Arizona and California and don't get it. Was not impressed either time.
Five guys need to change one major thing. Offer different cheeses. If I get a burger with mushrooms I want swiss not american.
