Stolen Laptops

  1. Hi there.

My dwelling was broken into today and laptops and camera stolen. It was in broad daylight, sometime between 830 and 3. Sadly, a lot of photos of our infant son were on those computers, some not backed up. Of course, same on the camera.

If anyone happened to see anything suspicious in the neighborhood of California and Hanford, we'd be very appreciative of any leads. We are luckily insured, but those photos are irreplaceable.

    Thanks!

  2. They even took his piggy bank, which was customized. That just crosses another line. I'm pretty not happy right now.

  3. Did you file a report with the Police, odroku?

If not, please do so right away.

Of course, the ususal suggestion; check craigslist, and maybe pawn shops.

Sorry this happened to you and your family.

    Good luck.

  4. Cops coming. Will keep eye on Craigslist. Would love to hit pawn shops, but there are a LOT of them.

Probably telling you something you've already taken care of, but perhaps knocking on all your neighbors' doors (and notifying BW Captains after the cops should be SOP for everybody) to see if and what they heard or saw. Never know, it might help.

    It just sux.

  7. So...did anyone, by chance, happen to see a "tall black guy" walking north on California with a bag of stuff over his shoulder (maybe a pillowcase, even) and carrying something under one of his arms sometime in the area of 10:30? He was seen leaving our house with stuff.

    oroku -

maybe ping TR directly, if you have a solid witness. I say go for it. Might get more viewers of the home page if she is willing and you've got firm info.

  9. We do. We have a solid eyewitness who got a decent description. They made eye contact. The police seem to be disturbingly disinterested in following up on the lead. I'm very aggravated.

Witness saw someone walking away from your house with a pillowcase full of stuff and didn't call cops? Does anyone else find that singularly UNimpressive.

I'm not a big fan of posting warnings every time a "suspicious" person walks down the street -- but this one seems like an easy call.

If your block observes watch night, you might want to bring it up...and suggest a new definition of "watch".

  11. The neighbor saw the guy leaving the house. They made eye contact. He turned around and pretended to lock the door, which allowed her to believe he was a friend of some sort. There's no real reason for her to have thought much otherwise, to be honest. She had no way of knowing. At least it seemed suspicious enough for her to note it.

That makes more sense -- and I really empathize and sympathize with the violation.

Last summer someone stole my backpack from my unlocked (in the carport car. I sent email to the two people in the neighborhood whoseo email addresses I have and a very sweet man, out walking his dog, found my pack in a hedge on the corner.

It had drafts of all my work at home work; nothing interesting or sellable, but I would have been very screwed without it.

I think in a city people walk a fine line between meddline and useful civic involvement. Frankly, I don't like the small town "everyone is in everyone's business" atmosphere -- but I do like knowing attention is being paid.

Good luck getting your stuff back; I suspect there are known pawn shops where people sell hot stuff and if you want help calling them, email me and I'll get on the phone tomorrow. :-)

  13. That's nice to offer. We did try to call a few pawn shops. The people there were all nice, but basically gave us advice to not bother calling as they are all required to call in everything they buy every day to the police to be matched against their records. I figure that's about the best we can hope for. Either they do that, or, if they don't, they're not going to tell us if they have our stuff anyhow.
