Someone please tell me I'm dreaming.

Or point me to whoever is offended by the term "Easter Eggs".

    -.-

  2. What is the educational value of Easter baskets, anyway? If public schools would just stop celebrating religious holidays, they wouldn't have to resort to such PC nonsense.

  3. When given a choice between getting to go outside and scramble for a basketful of candy (at the risk of being exposed to subtle religious indoctrination) and sitting in a classroom pondering the benefits of a 100% secular education — kids will nearly always go for the candy. Imagine that!

Pick a tradition, any tradition. You'll always find some person or group that has a problem with it.

So a kid from - **an unnamed school** - volunteers to do something at - **an unnamed school**- and something happened.

    Been there.

    Banned that from this page.

Easter is the Christian substitution for a pagan celebration of spring. Re-renaming it for spring makes some sense. But calling eggs, "spheres' does not. There's nothing religious about eggs. If you're ridiculously going from the concrete to the abstract, an egg is an ovoid.

  6. hmmm.."spring ovoids"...has an interesting ring to it - lolol...

Does anybody really think little kids give a hoot about what these things are called? What are they going to do, go join the Easter Bunny Cult? It's fun, it's candy! What's not to like about it? Geez. These are probably the same people who take all the fun out of Halloween too.

Reminds me of my sister when she was little - my Mom couldn't give her chocolate bunnies in her Easter basket because she wouldn't eat the cute little things.

Here is a fantastic article on why Easter Eggs and Merry Christmas can rankle...and why a lot of us who are rankled by it don't ever bother to say so.

  9. Spring Eggs were too religious?

  10. I heard this young (very intelligent) girl interviewed on Dori's show and it was pretty funny to me that she explained how the teacher said, " look, Spring Spheres," and the kids all shouted "Easter Eggs!" in apparent excitement.
I understand being sensitive to the religious beliefs of others, but at what point do we cross the line into being overly sensitive? Before you know it, there will be nothing fun about childhood anymore. Some of my best memories as a kid involve celebrations at school for various holidays. This girl fell in love with these kids and wanted to do something fun and nice for them before they parted ways. She had no intention of putting a religious stamp on the gesture...she just wanted to give some kids some candy in a plastic egg.

  11. Ostare, Ostara, Ostern, Eostra, Eostre, Eostur, Eastra, Eastur, Austron and Ausos.

All names for early fertility goddesses.

Why wouldn't the egg be its symbol?

Somehow I don't think the pagans are offended.

I'm more offended by the plastic eggs than by any symbol. Spring spheres - seriously?

But as to the plastic eggs - please don't distribute those things in gardens and parks, and make sure you have previous permisssion to have a "spring sphere" hunt in said areas. Enormous damage can be done to emerging plants and delicate planting areas. Non-horticulturalists and eager children usually don't know the difference.

If you have a full belly and clean pants, how bad can things really be?
