Southgate Roller Rink dispute

OK. I'm hoping there is someone out there who has the inside scoop on the people running the rink and can settle this debate I'm having with my friend.

I went to the Adult Skate (18+) last night and noticed that they were playing censored versions of all of the songs. Not only was Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man" the radio version but they played a strange version of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" that not only completely took out the rhythmic gun shot sounds but was missing all musical references to the Clash's "Straight to Hell". That one in particular was bizarre.

Here's the question. Is the place run by religious folk who feel the need to protect adults from certain language and themes or is it simply that they only have one version on hand that is safe to play during All Ages skate times?

In this age of digital music and hundreds of thousands of songs at our fingertips, it seemed strange, odd, and annoying to pay money for an adult experience and be met with beeps, bleeps, and blanks during the music...

Otherwise, it was a great experience. Lots of fun! I encourage everyone to check it out. Fantastic assortment of people at the 18+ skate. I'd say the majority of people were in their 30's with plenty of people on either side of that.

    Roll on...

  2. This idea might be a little out in left field, but you could call them and ask.

  3. Here's my random theory - maaaaybe not all "adult" skaters actually enjoy listening to a barrage of amplified gunshots and f-bombs like language but do enjoy skating to popular music, so they use the 'radio' versions.
And also, possibly, the music licensing for 2 versions of songs vs. 1 version of songs may be more expensive.
Zenguy's got a point, probably more informative to call the business owners than to ask for random opinions and theories from us here... Then you could post back here and tell us all!
Also, could you ask them if they might turn down the music for family skate 'cause I've heard from folks that have been there that it can be really loud and that's why I haven't gone yet with my daughter... or maybe I'll call them myself.

Zenguy, that's just crazy talk! ;-) Far too simple and direct.

I plan to ask next week when I go back. I just couldn't help putting it out there. However, they are not open at 9:30am and a question of this extreme importance couldn't wait!

Besides, it's so much more satisfying when you feel like you've gotten some sort of insider's scoop...

  5. Josh Rhoads is the owner and usually the one in the booth spinning the tunes....or you could visit his FB page http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000516227849
or the Southgate Roller Rink FB page
    http://www.facebook.com/pages/Southgate-Roller-Rink/191581727529017
    to ask these same questions.

  6. My guess would be that since they also own another rink (Lynnwood??) they have found in the past that not all adults like the f word or lots of wearing or the n word in their music. Probably easier to just have the censored version to keep complaints down.

  7. The censored version of anything is always worse.

Except, of course, when it's better:

  8. They don't own the Lynnwood skate rink, Josh managed that rink for 3 years. His wife, Erin, does the marketing for South Gate.

In terms of the music on Adult night, I go at least once a week and I have heard unedited music and edited. I don't get the impression that Erin or Josh are especially conservative or religious. I bet that it is just the version they have.

I prefer the edited versions myself, only because I am hoping the South Gate Rink stays open and I think more people would stay away if the music was more crude or had more profanity (I listen to a lot of rap and hip hop.)I won't go to any other rinks because I want to spend all my money for skating locally so the rink stays open.

Josh, Erin and the rest of the staff at South Gate are very good about monitoring the teenagers on Friday nights (the busiest teen night) and keeping everyone in line. I have found a lot of the other rinks just don't monitor the activity and feel like I am going to get ran over by an inexperienced skater showing off for their friends.
