Somewhere in West Seattle (15): "Vroom with a View"

  1. OK. Here's the Vroom:

    And here's the view:

The rest, my friends, is up to you.

  2. Somewhere on Andover SW between 53rd and 51st?

  3. You are close-ish jwws.
    But not close-ish enough.

Here's another photo of this guy's Johnson, this one from a different angle. And totally au naturel:

Here's an enlarged view of the one I had up there before:

As you can see, no matter where the guy himself is standing, his Johnson always points to the water. I guess you could call it a kind of "man compass."

Supposedly we all came out of the ocean once, you know.

Most of us have gotten over it.

  4. hmm...a view of the water...sort of looks like Charlestown up near 54th SW.. or going down the Charlestown hill that takes you to Admiral Way. What is that ..Orleans SW? Something like that? Or Hillcrest? I used to live up in that 'hood on 54th just down from Charlestown SW...

  5. Directly uphill (east) of Constellation Park

  6. I can't quite place the exact street, but it appears to be in, or perhaps at the south end of that '50-60's neighborhood, that is the Admiral District's answer to Fauntlee Hills, with the really nice view houses, and fancy streetlights.

I, like I'm sure most others, had assumed (yeah, I know) that the guy's Johnson was hanging off the back of a boat.

Didn't even cross my mind that someone would ram their Johnson into the dirt in the parking strip.

  7. For centuries, Genesee Hill's Johnsons have waited for their men to come home from the sea . . .

Some of JayDee's suggested details for this were brilliant. Others were, well . . .

Here's what else he told me:

I think it is a trolling motor and more likely to have been used in Lake WA than Elliott Bay.

(OK. Umm . . . Actually, I'm not sure if that's supposed to be a clue or not. — And if it is a clue, then a clue to what?)

Another JayDee idea for the title was " 'Rude with a View " — which I like very much, except that for people to get that one, they would have to know that, at one point, Evinrude corporation manufactured Johnson motors. I thought: That kind of information is probably too obscure even for the likes of Mike.

JayDee also said that he "noticed" this thing sitting out there more than 10 years ago(!!) so it's been there at least that long. Frankly, I'm surprised WSB hasn't done some kind of feature story on it already.

I'm convinced that there IS a story in this motor. And it's trying to get out.

Perhaps if someone throws a bucket of water on it, it will turn back into a mermaid.

  8. I caught on to the "Rude" part right away.

However, I didn't know/forgot that Evinrude made Johnsons.

I can just imagine this guys neighbors gossiping; "Oh my! Isn't our neighbor Evan, rude! He has his Johnson sticking up out of his parking strip! He's a disgrace to the entire neighborhood!"

  9. Orleans SW and 56th (ish)?????

    Posted 1 year ago #
  10. jwws: You are wrong (I think; I don't know the exact location, but Orleans and 56th was not the intersection that JayDee told me.)

However, you are definitely getting ishier.

Mike: Are you pulling my Johnson? ('Cuz it's ok if you are, you know.)

JayDee: Feel free to jump in any time here.

—Just watch out for that propeller.

  12. How about the 5650 block of SW Spokane Street, just west of Frater Ave on the south side of the street?

Trouble is I no longer think it's there. A Google Street Map view of the location clearly shows the green and blue houses down the hill to the west and across the street, the telephone pole just east of the driveway, and even shows the three angled steps directly across the street. The motor however is apparently long gone, as is the rock garden across the street - now replaced with greenery.

I suspect, since the motor had supposedly been there ten years or more, that JayDee may have given you old photos.

As I was searching and typing, it appears that SlyBanker beat me to the submit button... ;>)

If it's right, we'll split it. You actually showed your work.

  14. The motor is still there, I was past it on my daily strolls from alki to the junction.

  15. Erik: Thank you for confirming that this week's SWIWS item is still there! Since I didn't actually get a good look at the perpetrator's Johnson before posting, I could have been seriously pwned on this. Fortunately, JayDee is a good guy and didn't pwn me. (Don't the rest of you get any ideas now.)

Pibal: I'm truly sorry that I can't hand this one to you, but technically, SlyBanker did beat you to it, according to the official panel of SWIWS judges, who do exactly what I tell them to.

So congratulations, SlyBanker! You've just won yourself an OUTBOARD MOTOR.

  16. Something I've always wondered about . . .

What kind of parents would name their kid "Sly Banker" anyway?
    I mean . . . the presumption of that!

How the hell did they know what kind of banker you'd turn out to be?

I'll take the blame for this one. My parents have plausible deniability on their side. On my 1st birthday, I reached for money, which in Korean tradition means the child will grow up to be wealthy. As I grew up, I was not the most well-behaved child which is where the Sly part came in. The Banker part came after I started working for WaMu. And since I was with WaMu/Chase at the end, a friend decided to put them together and tada, SlyBanker was born. I'm not wealthy, but I did make it out of the bank without jail time, which is alright with me.

  18. Nope, DP.

Not pulling your Johnson, leg, or yanking your chain! ;-)

  19. While I'm still in the mood for thanking people, I'd like thank all the ws people in the house. And when I say "ws people," I don't mean people from WS. I mean specifically people with the letters "ws" in their noms d'blog.

I mean people like the indefatigable jwws and the venerable miws. And just generally anybody out there with a "ws" in their handle.

For some reason I feel that you will someday be God's Appointed Ones.

    Meanwhile, SlyBanker said:

    Oh. That's very interesting, Sly.

Guess what I reached for on my 1st birthday?

    — That's right, I reached for my Johnson, which in American tradition means that the child will pretty much grow up reaching for his Johnson.

    — Which is pretty much exactly what happened.

And which still IS happening, in fact, as this thread so amply and pathetically demonstrates.

  20. Thanks for playing everyone. It is hard to follow DP and be the straight guy but...

Maybe google street view fuzzed/blurred the photo? Probably everytime I walk by this outboard I am struck by the "why" and probably will be even after it actually is gone...

  22. DP, I'd pay YOU for a not-even-that-long feature about the story behind this. I have never seen it before. (Or if DP doesn't want to, any other professional writer in the house ... editor@westseattleblog.com )
