mpaige04ParticipantHello!
I wanted to check here and see if anyone else in the Alki area had any visitors yesterday afternoon from a solicitor? At about 2pm, as I was laying my baby down for a nap I heard a loud knock at the door and answered thinking it was my neighbor. However, it was a young African American man, with tattoos on his neck. He handed me some folded up papers with a list of magazines he was trying to sell and said that if he earned enough credits he could win $1000. He asked me “have you ever wanted to earn a $1000?” From the sound it, he was most likely a part of some worker retraining program. Finally, I said I just purchased a ton of magazines and am not interested. He then asked me “would you hire me? And why?” I started to feel very uncomfortable and told him I wasn’t interested again. Then he had the nerve to ask me for a bottle of water, or something to drink! I was afraid he was going to follow me inside. I quickly ran in the door and locked it behind me. To get rid of him I tossed a drink outside and said goodbye. In this whole situation he was never threatening, but there was something about him that made me question the whole thing.
Has he or someone with the same purpose come to your door!? I want to figure out what organization he is with so I can call them.
Not a fan of solicitors!

WSBKeymasterWe got a note today from someone who was concerned about behavior of a solicitor in the Admiral area, just uphill from you – I’ve mentioned your post.

gsegrovesMemberOur neighbor on 48th Ave SW near Admiral Way reported to police on 10/27 a series of encounters with an individual who left a suspicious feeling in three different households. He was apparently soliciting for a business named “Unity Management,” which we can’t find trace of online and for which he had no brochures or materials. He approached some of us mid-afternoon and some after dark. Our neighbor who reported on our behalf called back to police today and learned there were similar reports on 44th Ave as well as elsewhere on our block. The concern we have is less about solicitors and more about people posing as solicitors with an intent to burglarize.

FreeRangeAuthorParticipantThese days I NEVER open my door without first seeing who is on the other side. I have view panes in the door. Even when I am expecting someone I look first. If I don’t recognize them I DON’T open the door and talk to them through the door. If they ask me to open the door I say no and that I am calling the police.
I live near Delridge SW & SW Thistle. Lived in these blocks for 58 years. I no longer consider anywhere along Delridge to be safe.
Within 3 months of moving into my new home in 2011 burglars broke in and stole my large screen TV, requiring 2 people to carry, when I was out for 45 min shopping. They were obviously watching my home.
I now sleep with my pistol at my bedside. If I get any knock/ring at the door after dark I don’t even go to the door and immediately get my pistol at my side.
Some months ago there was a home invasion between Delridge and Sealth High School, just north of Thistle – a man with a SHOTGUN, during the day, went into a home with a woman and her daughter. Locked/put them in a bathroom while he robbed the home. The woman and daughter escaped through a window, called police from a neighbor’s home. The invader was gone when the police arrived. It is reported here on WSB.
It’s a sad way to live. I am now looking to move out of King County.

mcdeMemberI live near 50th and Grayson and I had a similar situation on Tuesday. A young man knocked on the door about 1pm. We have a no soliciting sign and I looked out the window because I don’t open the door for anyone I don’t know. He was looking at my window and waved at me. When I didn’t open the door he knocked loudly and rang the bell again. I said through the door, no solicitors and he responded with “how do you know I’m a solicitor”. I told him I would call the police if he didn’t stop knocking and he proceeded to yell something I couldn’t understand through the door for a few minutes and finally left. I saw him say something to my neighbor who was getting out of her car, but he didn’t stop to talk with her. What concerned me from the beginning is that he tried to open the screen door(which was locked) before he knocked or tried the bell. The dog barked so I knew someone was there. Who comes around in the middle of the day when most people are at work?
