about something totally unrelated to you.
Should we drive to Portland tomorrow? I've only missed one family Christmas party ever. It'd be brutal to miss it. But it'd be even more brutal to get stuck on I-5 or to get in a wreck.

let me know what you guys come up with, ellenater. We're headed to Eugene...I think.
If you DO drive to Portland - be careful and leave early. The storm is supposed to hit here tomorrow afternoon.
Jen,
There's supposed to be one there (Portland) earlier! But it's hard to sort out fact from hype. The parka boys will look for any excuse to don their gay apparel. :)
I'm going to watch NWCN.
part of it would be when would you return?
Train?
that's the trouble. we HAVE to be back Sunday or Monday at the latest...
Ellenater,
I just got a call from Eddie he's pi**ed at you!!
Anyway I tired to cover for you:)
If I were you I'd go. Why? because all my family are 4500 miles away and only for he Atlantic I'd drive too:)
You say "we" so that's good. If ya got a decent car,4x4 with chains then ya should be fine. Bring plenty of warm clothes, blankets, food and water and have yourself a very merry adventure!
We are headed to Cannon Beach in the am...so we were wondering the same thing. Curious if anyone has opinions (hopefully not hype!) about going to longview and then over & down?
meg, look at the wdot pages. that's the least hype based info. out there...so far. We got married at Cannon Beach!
cruiser. Eddie SAID he was in on it. He was to get half. Tell him the deal's off and I want my inflatable Barbara Bush back. To hell with Eddie!
our car is a Toyota Corolla. SO there's that, lol. But we've been getting around town fine.
I hope you get to at least talk to your fam. soon. :)
A friend of mine made it to Portland yesterday but it took her 6.5 hours to make the trip.
yesterday was kinda fun, today it's kinda boring...might have something to do with running outa hot toddies. better venture out for more. but i digress; imo i've always felt there's safety in numbers when on a holiday road trip. lots of like-minded people joining the i-5 convoy to festive destinations...generally seems like drivers are relaxed, alert, and saving the partying til they get there.
p.s. check out the cliff mass report on the hp
I will. If you tell me what in the heck it is!
To anyone contemplating a long trip in this weather, I would say to take into consideration your driving abilities on snowy and icy roads. Plus, said driving abilities, SHOULD there be another nasty snowstorm during the drive.
Also, how snowworthy is the vehicle you'll be driving? And be sure, as they've been pounding into our heads the last several days, have emergency supplies (emergency flares and other car supplies, food, water, extra clothing, etc.) on board, (easily accessible, and not totally buried under the luggage and Christmas presents! ;-) ).
And, like JenV said, be careful, and leave early. We don't want you getting hurt, or worse! :-)
Mike
ellenator: scroll down to the 1:26 pm update on the homepage.
ellenator: I would say play it by ear.
i am doing the same thing. we have a four wheel drive vehicle, and bought some chains today, but our still waiting till early tomorrow a.m. to check the report. Will probalby leave mid morning if we decide its doable.
so the Cliff Mass report had a link to his blog where I found this:
"From KATU weather site:
A WINTER STORM WATCH HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR MUCH OF OUR AREA INCLUDING THE PORTLAND METRO FOR SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. SNOW WILL BECOME POSSIBLE BY NOON SATURDAY AND IS EXPECTED TO TRANSITION INTO FREEZING RAIN BY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. ICE ACCUMULATION WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE DAY SUNDAY. WARMING TEMPERATURES AND A TRANSITION TO RAIN LOOKS POSSIBLE SUNDAY EVENING. THIS STORM HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BRING DOWN TREES AND POWERLINES. PLEASE STAY UPDATED."
The irony is, I think we could make it down but then my brother, who lives in just outside of Portland, wouldn't be able to make it in. Or out, really. And if he isn't coming, then the niece and nephew aren't coming. :( It's not looking good!
Thanks, wingme. Time to visit the liquor store.
If the rest of you go, BE CAREFUL.
oh crap, i almost missed happy hour!
Maybe another solution would be to have Christmas a few days late. Why not postpone it a few days and let the storm pass and then everyone can come together w/o having to worry about the weather. My family always gets together on Christmas Eve and one year everyone was sick so we did it on New years Day and it was the best. No one was in a hurry or had to leave early for another family get together.
meg..
the road from longview to long beach has the least elevation change of any of the routes, but it is also the least traveled and is next to the columbia which funnels freezing rain and wind...
Hwy 26 from portland to Seaside is the most traveled and generally the best sanded....
if i was choosing an option. i believe i would choose hwy 26...
Don't go. At some point, you'll want an excuse not to go (believe me!) And avoiding this horrible weather will allow you to establish a precedent. I wish I were kidding -- I'm not; I commuted from Iowa to Michigan through storms for holidays throughout my first marriage. Probably why it's my first, but not last, marriage. :-)
I've decided to stay home. This sure does suck!
We got pictures from a friend that lives in Cannon Beach.. Its pretty, but when it looks that way there, you know it has to be a mess getting there.
Don't go!!!! Unless it's really something you want to risk your life for. I was really disappointed last night to miss out on something The Kid and I had been planning to do, and it only would have required a trip to Kirkland, but even that looked like holy hell and Co-Publisher P talked me out of it. Remember, it's not just if YOU can drive it, but THE OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROADS ... and you can't control whether they're capable or not.
Thanks TR. We decided not to go. For the same reason. It just isn't worth the risk!
So all ya gotta do now is say sorry to Eddie and Santa may be able to find you yet:)
Santa is OFF my naughty list. He brought the laptop today as well as a very good supply of booze. Me and Santa are tight again. Eddie... well, that's just a whole other story.
hey cruiser, cute kid! no wonder you believe in Santa.
