Sizzlin' Summer Recipes by DP

  1. Are the dog days of summer taking a toll on your garden and driving up your water bill? Don’t fight the drought. Make it work for you!

Here are a few quick and easy recipes that will save you time in the kitchen and cut your water bill in half.

    Recipe 1: E-Z Boiled Greens

    – Before going to work in the morning, just unreel the garden hose and lay it out in the sunniest part of the yard.

    – When you get home, the hose water should be around 200º. Turn the hose full blast on your garden for about a minute, then just rake up the dead plants and serve immediately.

Note: Flowers, young shrubs, or even tree leaves can be substituted for garden greens.

When your spouse asks why there's so much food on the table all at once tell her it's been an excellent season for boiled stuff.

  5. Pygmy Carrots: The All-Purpose Zero-Calorie Snack

Everyone knows carrots are good for you. But who has time to eat a whole carrot? By planting carrots in the summer and carefully neglecting them, you can ensure that your carrots will never get any bigger than one inch.

Pygmy carrots are an excellent diet food, because of course you can't eat them. And they're so high in fiber that they will actually sharpen your food processor blades!

They are also great for killing gophers.

  6. Vine-Dried Tomatoes

Waiting for tomatoes to dry out in the refrigerator can be agonizing. Why not dry them right on the vine? It’s so simple!

Just fertilize and water your tomato plants until they are brimming with ripe juicy tomatoes. Then pack up the car and go on a three-week vacation.

Note: If you can't bear to think of your tomato plants suffering in the summer heat, hire the neighbor kid to water them for you, paying him generously in advance. That way you can be sure your tomatoes will be thoroughly dessicated when you return.
