Sidewalk construction at Pier 50

  1. Just got an email that sidewalk construction will be taking place at Pier 50 downtown (where the Water Taxi lets off) ... which will begin at the same time as the viaduct closure, when they ask us to consider taking the water taxi, because nobody apparently thinks twice (nor cares) about West Seattle commuters and the timing of different projects.

    Pier 50 sidewalk closure October 20 - November 22
The sidewalk on the west side of Alaskan Way, between Columbia and Yesler, will be closed for construction starting today, October 20, through November 22. Pedestrians walking southbound to Pier 50 should stay on the east sidewalk along Alaskan Way and cross at Yesler.

I didn't know anything about it until I got this WSF ferry alert in my e-mail:

"The pedestrian sidewalk on the west side of Alaskan Way, between Columbia and Yesler Streets, will be closed from October 20, 2011 to November 22, 2011 for electrical work. Please use the walkway on the east side of the street. We apologize for the inconvenience."

I don't know if the crosswalk across the entrance/exit from Colman Dock is closed, but if it is, I think you have to go several blocks south to get across Alaskan Way (IIRC, there's no crosswalk on the south side of the intersection).

I rode the 1130 water taxi home and came upon the sidewalk closed sign. At that time there was no construction going on. The sidewalk was blocked for about 8-10 feet. I just, carefully walked around the fence in the parking lane and then back onto the sidewalk. Did not see a reason to cross the street for that little bit. However that could change at any time.

  5. In case someone sees this before the main page article, just got an email that it's been postponed:

WSF announces postponement of sidewalk project
Washington State Ferries has just announced that due to a permitting error, the closure of the sidewalk at Colman Dock, between Columbia and Yesler, has been postponed. Work will resume in November.
