   I'm looking for someone (hopefully in West Seattle) to share a Costco membership. Costco allows two households to share. It would be great if I can find someone who has similar preferences on healthy foods and dry goods so we can sometimes split the huge bulk packages and split the cost. It's not feasible for just me, in an apartment, but I'd like to save money and there's some special items that Costco offers that I can't find elsewhere.    Donna, is that something new that 2 households can share? In order for me to add a 2nd card to my membership for my husband, we had to show proof that we lived at the same address.

   Or...I've also heard that anyone can go buy gift cards and use them without being a member. Doesn't help you with sharing the bulk stuff though.

   I think they're starting to crack down on the membership sharing. I believe they allow two people per household, not any two people that don't share a household. I share a membership with my sister and signed up last January when I was renting her home (she wasn't residing there) and I almost felt guilty about it. I think they specifically asked if we lived together, which I found rather pushy. Just get ready for that possibility! Now she lives in Texas so I wonder if they'll give me grief about that when I renew.

   i just paid as much to keep my mother-in-law on my card as i would have paid to purchase her a membership

   you might want to look into this a little more closely if you want cards in your own names

   We just added me to a membership with my boyfriend and we're not in the same house - yet. They didnt even question it when I picked up my card.

   Maybe being in the family makes a difference. I'm on my daughter's membership but she pays extra for it; also her daughter who lives farther north.

    I'm just now getting back to this discussion. I posted the request to find someone to share a membership. Most everyone I know who has a membership, shares it with someone else other than a member of their household.

    I asked Costco about their policy this week. It is allowed, but not promoted. You can have one other person share the membership and they don't have to live in the same household or be related.

    Evidently the company in this region of the country is more open and understanding that it is not practical for a single person living alone in a small place to have a membership and buy bulk containers of food and household goods. It's a benefit to the company to allow this because they'll gain two customers who otherwise would not have joined.

    It seems clear in the Member Benefit guide that two people sharing a membership must live at the same address, and that Costco can make you prove it if they want to.

    Here's what the Costco Member Benefits booklet says: "A free Household Card is available to a primary or add-on cardholder’s spouse, domestic partner, or immediate family member over the age of 18 and living at the same address. Household Cardholders will be asked to present proof that they live at the same address as either the primary or add-on cardholder."

    (Add-on cardholders are cardholders that are added onto a business membership for an additional fee.)

    So a couple things:
    When does the cashier verify the user of the card with the picture? Can't say I've tried it but worth a shot. I seem to remember taking friends with me and having them pay seperately for their purchase. Also, a Business account allows multiple players. Regarding gift cards, true you can buy gas or a car wash with the gift card without showing a membership card (makes buying gas easy since you just have to slide one card into the reader to buy the gas). But the gift card doesn't get you into the store, you must show a membership card.

    Donna, thanks for checking in with Costco on the policy and posting here. For I Wonder, prior to having my own membership, I did use my twin sister's card and was never questioned about the photo (naturally), but I once made the mistake of buying some wine and got carded. When my driver's license didn't match her membership card name, I was caught redhanded and scolded by the cashier. Oops. So don't buy alcohol if you're going to borrow someone else's card!
