Greetings, We have recently relocated to W. Seattle and love it. We moved here from Bainbridge Island, for a new job. I now commute to Auburn for this and I am desperately trying to figure out the best school placement for my soon to be third grade son and seventh grade daughter. I have researched Pathfinder and like what I see. I would love some input on how to best connect mid summer with someone regarding the school. The Highpoint link does not seem to have a phone number. I am also considering enrolling them in the districts around Auburn ( I have been advised that Auburn proper is not a good choice). I would then just drop them off on the way to work. I would really prefer to have them ( and us) get connected in this community. My daughter in particular is really struggling with this move. ANY info would be most appreciated. Thanks much!

Karly - I would be happy to chat about Pathfinder with you. I have a soon-to-be 8th grader who has been there since Kindergarten (and an older child who was there K-5). You can email me at add726 at gmail dot com.

What is your reference school?

My son goes to Pathfinder and we like it. My daughter goes to Arbor Heights and we like that too. But do you think you could get into Pathfinder? They have long waitlists.

I thought that may be the case. What is the process for newcomers to the community? I am not certain of our reference school, we are on 40th off of Morgan.

You need to go here and check out the process from the horses mouth-otherwise you will be even more lost than the horse will get you!!!

Looks like your reference school is Gatewood.
Sorry I don't know anything about that one.

I don't think there is a waitlist for 7th grade at Pathfinder ... not sure about 3rd.

You are so close to the ferry dock--you could consider Vashon as well. (I know you're already coming off of another island.) It's a great way to keep the kids together throughout their schooling, though it would be a $110-a-month cost for ferry passes. I can only say great things about our Vashon experience of the past five years.

Yup, looks like your elementary reference school is Gatewood, and your Middle School reference is Madison. I don't know much about Madison, but we have been at Gatewood for the past 5 years, and my child (and I) have been extremely happy with it. It is a school that has grown a great deal over that time, and it has really only gotten to be a better, more engaging, interesting school in that time. I have found the faculty to be incredibly engaging and that they really go the extra mile in getting to know what works best for their students.

I have a daughter entering 7th at Madison this fall. She had a fantastic 6th grade year there and I was extremely impressed with her teachers (this from the perspective of someone who worked in public and private schools around the Puget Sound area for many years). I had some reservations going in but in retrospect I think this was her best year of school yet, both socially and academically. She's really looking forward to the new school year, in no small part because of the enthusiasm, compassion and creativity of the teaching staff. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have about Madison: herongrrrl at yahoo dot com.

Thanks all, I can already tell that this is a great community with concerned and responsive parents. This has helped me greatly!
