lbeParticipantI am reading that there are a lot of mail thefts in West Seattle, so wondering if anyone has suggestions on a well-made secure mailbox ( I do not need one on a post, but it needs to fit amongst a box of boxes). A lot of boxes seem to have issues that a women’s hand could fit in.
Sort of curious too – what about larger packages. Postman would have to walk a distance to house to put at front door. Which is inconvenient for postal worker, and then more noticeable sitting at door ( not so much at my house, but if someone does come to front door.. the package is there).
And… by chance any West Seattle programs for new mailboxes?
I do wish there was a way to feel comfortable about LEAVING mail in the mailbox, or having the post office armed with keys! Unfortunately mail is still used, but the drones are coming, and maybe they will have secret codes for depositing packages into a locked box :)

trickycooljParticipantNot sure how it works in an established neighborhood but in High Point we have one box on each block with about 15 locking boxes that are plenty for a weeks worth of mail and slim packages. There are two parcel boxes that the mail carrier will leave a key in your individual box to access if something doesn’t fit. Westwood Post Office issues aside, I’m more comfortable leaving something delivered by USPS in the locked box all day than UPS/FedEx on my porch. Maybe check with the USPS if you can get one for an established neighborhood? I’ve generally only seen them in new housing developments and the suburbs.

JoBParticipantmy best advice is to stick your hand in them until you find one you can’t .. that’s what i did.
i think i ended up with something called the Big Box.. i bought it a Lowes.
mine is on a post but it fits in almost the same footprint of my old mailbox.
it handles small packages well… but there is no provision for larger.

savoirfaireParticipantWe just picked up one called a Mail Boss at TrueValue in the Junction and so far, so good. It was a bit fiddly to install (wall-mounted, with some funny spacer-things), but once it went up everything is fine. There’s a pull-forward (oven-style, if you will) door on the front and the slot is inside of and perpendicular to that with not much clearance to the top of the box. I tried to get my hand into the slot just to see, and I would have had to have boneless wrists to get anything out of there.

JeanineParticipantWe have a Pinnacle ( http://www.lockingmailbox.com/ ) it holds a LOT of mail/packages.
Expensive, but worth the money because the thing is a tank. Had someone back into it and it did more damage to the car than the mailbox!
Even better, they’re made in Oregon.

Rose AnnMemberThere is a program through the USPS for free Cluster Box Units. Please contact me to see if your neighborhood qualifies.
