What was he thinking? I respect a good carver too, especially of wildlife decoys for duck hunting. But is this really appropriate so soon after?

If the man were mentally ill, it is tragic, but I don't see any alternative for the police.

(PS- Read the responses in the article. The first two are surprisingly clever.)

  2. YOU might not see any alternative for the police but a commission has already found the shooting was unjustified. During the hearing it was shown the officer gave JTW less than 4 seconds to respond to the command to put the knife down. JTW was partially deaf and unsteady on his feet. He was not a threat.

  3. "...but I don't see any alternative for the police."

The alternative is- don't murder people that are no threat to you. What's so hard to understand about that?

  4. MarkAngello...

hello.. this is Seattle.. not Chicago...
    not even the wild west.

we don't shoot people here just because they are holding a knife in their hand.

We are kinder gentler folk here
heck.. we even prefer to relocate our spiders
    instead of killing them.

    We even welcome you...
I can't think of a better place for you to hone your editorial skills...

    Seattle.. the wet stone
    it has a certain cachet

I read the news. The investigation cleared the officer, said the shooting was justified. I agree.

I took a citizens training course taught by the police. One of the evenings was spent with the firearms trainers. We did a simulation of laser pointer handguns playing cops. The computer or the instructor ran random variations on similar starting circumstances for us so we didn’t know whether to fire or not. We had to watch the suspect and guess his intent by subtle actions. Tough being a cop.

We learned that it was impossible to stop a knife attacker in less than 21 feet. You may hit but he/she can still kill the innocent officer. It was interesting.

When a man refuses to throw down the knife in four seconds and appears wobbly, it may mean he has a little hearing problem (maybe he did but he is not blind!) and it may mean he is drunk (he was, and that means danger to cops from guys with knives.)

I am sure the cops in Seattle know this too. Don’t expect any lawsuits form this.

  6. I guess you need to read more carefully. The Police Firearms Review Board determined it was NOT justified.

Still a chance for some small justice in the form of a civil suit.

Amalla and others, you are right! The review board found it unjustified.

I agree there is still time for justice. A lawsuit verdict in favor of the officer will clear his good name. Perhaps the officer could then sue the estate of the deceased for trauma the officer suffer as a result of the attack.

Some review boards are political in nature... sometimes even appointed by the mayor! I wonder.

I realize that reality can be harsh, but that is the way real life works. You threaten a cop with a deadly weapon and get a bullet. What's the joke? "The loser brought a knife to a gun fight."

This is not cruel and heartless... just tough love.

I say BS to "it's impossible to stop a knife attacker in less than 21 feet"..as if the 3" knife, if thrown, would've killed the cop. Possible..yes, but likely, I think not.

You think you're funny? You're constantly proving what an irrelevant waste of time you and your posts are. That one takes the cake. Pretty easy to tell who the loser is, pal.

HeHe Sounds like the police department is doing its job in Seattle. Glad that they did not discipline the good officer for acting reasonably.

I would have done the same. I am sure a lawsuit would support the good officer. Now where is the legal defense fund? Oh wait, there's no lawyer that would waste the time on suing the justified shooting. It would only make the commission look worse for siding with the criminal.

  14. Yep, time to stop feeding the troll. It just makes them keep sniffing around, stinking up the place.

  15. Agreed. And this one sure stinks!

Even worse, this one in particular is a fundie Christian troll displaying an inappropriate, almost gleeful delight in the murder of an innocent man.

    Creepy, slimy hypocrite.
