School closures- finally now WE can move on.

  1. On the radio today they annouced the school closures. I'm finally glad we are done. It was getting out of hand. Some folks are super rude I can't believe they get worked up. The other kids left will be better off-

  2. jschu - You should check out the West Seattle Blog. They did an OUTSTANDING job of covering it live last night.

  3. jschu..

    which kids will be better for the closures?

    Certainly not the kids at Cooper or the kids in all of the other schools that will struggle to accommodate the needs of the kids who were in a successful program at Cooper...

  4. Cooper School? Not familar with that one- Did they have a special program? Aren't kids all the same. We can mix them together.

  5. So, to take you logic to the extreme, why not just make one big, central school and close all of the neighborhood schools?

  6. I would use city buses instead of school buses (save money) and let all kids ride free. You could have 3 or 4 Mega schools K-12 in each section of town. It can work- I'd also closed down Home schooling. That is a farce and the kids always seem not well adjusted in public.

  7. They are currently using city buses for older kids and it is a nightmare in my opinion. The system gets too overloaded during very small time frames, many are roudy and too much for the bus drivers to handle.

    I think there is value in going to school in ones own neighborhood. I walked to Lafayette as a child and then got bused to Rainier Beach, there were good points and bad to both but making friends in your general area is benefical.

    jschu, you definitely could use more research - here on the WSB homepage is a good place to start - I suggest using the link to WS Schools section (for home page), as well as the Google box up top (for forum). Not only will you learn the names of our neighborhood schools, but the history of the closure process, and the effects of using Metro busses, which is already being done. Then, let's hear your ideas. Otherwise, it appears you're throwing up uninformed flames simply to get a reaction.

  9. I have lots of ideas that is for sure. I thought that these chat rooms were for open discussion. I can do some more research and come up with better ideas, then someone smarter will writeback that I need to do MORE research. on and on. Your advice is good and mine is bad. I'll read more and see.

    It is about open discussion, jschu, but the fact that you've never heard of Cooper, which has been a key point of discussion during this process, makes me wonder where you're coming from.

  11. Postremo pensandum
    Quanta doctrinae commoditas sit in libris
    Quam facilis, quam arcana!
    Quam tuto libris humanae ignorantia paupertatem
    sine verecundia denudamus!
    Hi sunt magistri qui nos instruunt
    sine virgis et ferula,
    sine verbis et cholera, sine pannis et pecunia.
    si accedis, non dormiunt;
    Si inquirens interrogas, non abscondunt;
    Non remurmurant si oberres;
    Cachinnos nesciunt, si ignores.

    the pathfinder program which moves to cooper

  15. and, jschu, as I reread what you said in your posts on this thread, you obviously are not a parent or involved with children...no, they're not all alike, just as adults are different from one another. Unique, if you will. There are different ways of learning, and sometimes it's visual, sometimes it's through reading, through listening, some go slower or faster than others...yes, children are different from each other. Maybe the best thing you could do with your time at some point is to go tour a school, or volunteer to tutor, or at least help out in a classroom. Observe...it's enlightening...

  16. jschu, what should we do with the deprived kids who make possible "The other kids will be better off"? What if what they had was the best they will ever get?

    Personally (<--- Key word!)I think anything you read about a school is going to be false.

    You won't know what it's like being a student there, unless you are one.

    What your child's education comes down to, is the opportunities they have.

    The atmosphere those opportunities are in. By that I mean around the other students, not how the Teachers teach.

    How much your child really cares about things like Geography, U.S. Government, Trigonometry, Health etc

    How your child is able to communicate with other people.

    And how stable your child is mentally.

    Some of the worlds greatest minds never went to college, graduated high school or never saw the inside of a "school" at all and pursued their own education.

    I also agree that homeschooling is entirely ridiculous. It doesn't matter how much you can teach your child in a comfortable atmosphere if they have no concept of social engineering.

    And lastly, Zenguy. Your logic is entirely flawed. He said nothing about one enormous school. Transporting kids from around Seattle to said school would be ridiculous in Seattle's current state.

    Stop trying to instigate people, what's the point?
