Does anyone know of a salon or colorist in West Seattle (or anywhere in Seattle for that matter) who uses henna or other totally non-chemical hair dyes?

you might check with Sarah @ Ola Salon on Avalon Way. I know she uses organic hair dyes, as she has a sensitivity to the chemicals in regular hair dye. If she can't help, I'd bet that she could point you in the right direction.

I would suggest Shanti Salon & Spa in North Admiral. It is an Aveda Salon and only uses Aveda color which is plant based. It is the most enviornmentally friendly hair color made. http://www.Shantisalonspa.com or 206 932-5988

Just seeing this now and wanted to update the info about Sarah. She's now at Pure Hair on Cal. Ave. I don't know if she carries henna, but I have talked to her before about how she has clients who bring the henna to her to apply. Definitely worth calling her to find out, she's fab!
I do my own, and it can be messy but it's not that hard. But I just goop it onto all of my hair -- no interesting highlighting techniques or anything. It's worked pretty well for me anyway. :)

thanks for the update on Sarah. I've known her since she was 9yo, but am lucky to have someone come to my house for haircut, color, etc...for barter ( nice, believe me). I've heard good things about Pure Hair, too.

Check out Seattle Style Salon in their new location on 35th. I believe they use organic coloring products.

Thanks for all the info but I am looking for henna color - not organic color. Unfortunately, most "organic" hair dyes still contain low levels of PPDs and resorcinol - and legally they can still call themselves "organic" because they include mostly organic materials. But the harmful chemicals are still there and I'm not interested in having any form of contact with them. If you look at the material safety data sheets on organic dyes (at least all of the ones I looked up), they do still contain these chemicals. Henna is pure vegetable dye - no chemicals at all included. Thanks though... I'll keep looking.

You can get henna at the pike place market. Lush sells it too. It is super easy to do yourself. Just add water and put it on. Good luck.
