Is this really the important work our Senators are dealing with? Do you really think it will show up in the price of shoes? How about a no clothing tax < $175 similar to food tax to assist low income families?

They should keep the tariff and increase it. If 10 to 40% could not keep shoe mfg in this country (due to the tax breaks and loopholes for manufacturers to ship jobs overseas) then the tariff needs to stay. If our Dem senators wanted to drop the tarrif on shoes that wholesale for less the 50.00 then they might not be trying to please the shoe WA/OR SALES/import industry and high end consumers that need walk-in closets to store the results of their shoe obsession.
This country was financed entirely by tariffs until the mid to late 1800's. Tariffs were meant to make US industries employ Americans and use American materials and suppliers.Tariffs built the US into a manufacturing super power.
The reduction of tariffs and the signing of crazy trade treaties are shifting that wealth and jobs to other nationsPosted 11 months ago # -
You are on the wrong side of history. The English were as incensed about our decimation of the textiles industry in Leeds as we are about losing the New England shoe business..to China. Would a Boeing worker really want retaliatory tariffs? Or better, the EU not impose tariffs as they scooped up every single jet order to be had. You can buy domestic shoes. You just pay more. Cheap, abused, workers built American Industry, not tariffs. England did as you suggested, they enslaved India, to purchase india dye on the cheap..and refused to allow India to produce textiles and raised tariffs through the roof. Germany on the other hand, found the miracles of analine dyes derived from coal. Fron that came the German dominance in organic chemistry, armaments, steel technology and they soon eclipsed the Brits as the European superpower. where they remain today. The solution is innovation, technology, efficient manufacturing, and a superior work force.

Are you suggesting we abolish income taxes and return to the working conditions, the social structure of the 1800's? Like to be a garment worker in NY in 1875? 6 day work week, 14 hour day, and you can start at age 12. That was the wealth tariffs created. JP Morgan would have loved your economic theories.

Whens the last time you bought shoes with a made in usa label on it.... Now the trick is find anything with a made in usa on it. Go look in a big box store and come back say how meany you found. Then ask your self would bringing back the industries that make shoes, cothing and electronics and so on. Even our own flag is being made in china. How would this help the employment picture in this country......alot!!!!

America doesn't need to restore old industries with jobs that Americans frankly don't want to do anymore. That's just nostalgia and a failure of imagination. The US is the most innovative country in the world. We ought to occupy ourselves with creating new industries to remedy current and future needs. The 1950's were over a long time ago. We're now in a global marketplace with the capacity to source goods and materials from all over the world. I don't want to buy something just because it is American. I want to buy something because it is the best.

Well in order to create all those innovated new jobs. You need industrail might. Do you think everyone wants a service oriented job. Its not nastalga from the 1950's or failure of imagration. It was get it done as cheep as you can as fast as you can make bank in other words Creedy corporations. Then theres that word global marketplace sure it works. You buy I send you all or part of the jobs that go with it. Its ok americans can find jobs with new ...yea selling it to americans who can't afford it why oh yea unemployed and wages that you barely survive on service jobs. Imagration... this country was founded by immigrants took on the jobs no one wanted made the things no body like to make or do the back braking work.,,,who picked your fruit or veggies today...So why is it americans can't build or make the best the world has to offer....? U.S Corporate company's don't want you to. Why no money in it for share holder values. Who are the major stock holders in U.S. corparations. The ceo's and board of directors. Now who does the shoe tax benefit.....?
