Used to be a small home built entirely out of river rock or so it looked like to me, real close to the back side beach opposite Alki ave. Every time I ride past the area now I look for it but can't find it. (haven't ridden off the main avenue though, maybe ought to try that). All those nice homes along there. I sure hope it wasn't knocked down but I supposed it's possible.

Maybe you're forgetting which side of Duwamish Head it's on? It's still there, visible from Harbor Ave, not Alki Ave.

I will have to look. Where exactly on Harbor Ave. are you talking about?
I'm was pretty sure the one I'm thinking of was on Beach Dr SW on the back side beach around the corner from Alki past the Coast Guard station. West of 63rd Ave also. That was so close to Grandma's house I could go there by myself as a kid (about5-6 blocks)

Near the boat dock. Past Salty's. It use to be a jail I believe.

Oh, I remember that one. I'm still thinking there was one on Beach Dr. Could be mistaken though....

  6. bambooboy you're thinking of the one on Beach Dr, just around the corner from the Lighthouse, and near the Sewage Treatment Plant.

The story I always heard, was that the guy built the stone house, and the stone wall out front, by carrying all the stones up from the beach. He apparently died of a heart attack, before finishing.

The house had an elevator in it, for his disabled wife, and I believe it held a record, possibly Guinness, for being the smallest building with an elevator.

The house was torn down in the '70's or '80's, for an apt/condo. :-(

The wall remained for many years, and, as I recall the subject of it was brought up here within the last couple of years, and that the wall was either gone now, or at least in pretty bad shape.

That's the one! Really small as I recall. As I remember the rocks were round, that's why I figured river rocks, but dragging them up from the beach across the street does make more sense

  8. We lived on Beach Drive the first two years we were here (1991-1993) and I remember seeing what was left of the famous stone house ... but not for quite some years now, so the tide, I think, finally had its way with what was left of it - Tracy

  10. The little rock house made it into Ripley's Believe it or Not because of the elevator (more like the stair assist type.) The pebble wall is still there, but has quite the lean to it. The site is just to the west of the sewer plant on Beach Drive.

Also, all the holly bushes have been cut down around the former house of ill repute on Alki if you remember that story.

  13. I have done work for the lady that owns that house It has an interesting history. I Believe it was her father that gathered the rocks from the beach to do the outside of the house. someone should do a story on it.

  15. That's the one I'm thinking of. There is a bigger house built of stones on Harbor, I'm waiting for the condos to eat it.

  16. pibal....the house of ill repute? It's at 64th and Alki. It has been completely redone, raised with a new basement "B &B", complete with hot tub...
