schwaggyParticipantWow! Just Wow. I understand getting a ticket for driving the bus lane, but to simply cross it to keep going East instead of getting on 99. That’s lame, just lame. Hey motorcycle cop… how about you head East up the Bridge and tag the jerks driving totally in the bus lane getting on from lower Spokane St.?
July 23, 2013 at 4:52 pm #794342
WSratsinacageMemberYup, there have been bad accidents caused by people crossing from the 99 lane to the other lanes that continue to 1st, 4th, I5.
I like your idea to pop violations further east. Especially at the illegal to cross double white line area!
July 23, 2013 at 7:43 pm #794343
TanDLParticipantWhat section was cited for the violation? If you can cross the bus lane to get to the 99 turn, I don’t understand why you couldn’t cross the bus lane to get away from the 99 turn. There have also been accidents caused by people crossing from the Bridge lanes to the 99 turnoff.
I like your idea of more enforcement further east on the roadway, as well.
July 23, 2013 at 7:43 pm #794344
KBearParticipantWhat if you hadn’t been able to merge right away? Then you’d be… driving in the bus lane. The whole point of the bus lane is to provide an open right of way for buses. Having other vehicles crossing over it is counter to that purpose.
July 23, 2013 at 7:51 pm #794345
cwitParticipantSure, it may be lame but it makes sense. Like what Kbear said, that lane is supposed to be clear for a purpose. I’m actually pleasantly surprised to hear that a cop enforced it.
July 23, 2013 at 7:54 pm #794346
WFMemberwithout knowing the specifics, but route choice to go north depends on traffic and until you crest the bridge you cannot ascertain the choice.
however if a person simply crossed to queue jump the spd did its job
July 23, 2013 at 7:55 pm #794347
dhgParticipantThe CATCH is that you must decide whether to take 99 before cresting the bridge. Having made your decision, you now might be in traffic hell if 99 is standing still. The ability to move away from that hell and take 1st ave or 4th ave or i5 is just common sense. Ticket someone if they are in the bus lane and BLOCKING a bus but not for successfully moving over to the left.
July 23, 2013 at 7:58 pm #794348
anonymous123ParticipantOh man, I really wish they would monitor the double white line where you exit onto I-5.
July 23, 2013 at 7:59 pm #794349
mpentoParticipantGet rid of the bus lane
July 23, 2013 at 8:31 pm #794350
wsn00bParticipant+1 mpento. The underutilized bus lane is wasteful.
Hopefully, at the rate KCM is cutting bus routes, when there are no buses left maybe we can get the bus lane back. I keed. I keed.
July 23, 2013 at 8:33 pm #794351
JanSParticipantoh, for Pete’s sake. Know where you’re going and plan on it before you make a last minute move. The bus lane is open to crossing for quite some time, so get over then. SPD made the right decision. What KBear said in #4…
July 23, 2013 at 8:55 pm #794352
bailecyclistParticipantAgreed – make up your mind, pick a lane, and stay in it. Too many self-centered idjits use the bus lane, pretending to be unable to merge, but really trying to pass up the rest of us.
July 23, 2013 at 9:09 pm #794353
SarahScootParticipant“…tag the jerks driving totally in the bus lane getting on from lower Spokane St.?”
I need help with this part of the post. I get on the bridge from Spokane St. on a fairly regular basis, and proceed to the First Ave. exit. At no point from the Spokane onramp to that exit is that lane bus-only. Traffic that’s already on the bridge is not supposed to get into that lane until the solid white line ends, but traffic coming on to the bridge is fine in that lane. So… as far as I know, the above directive to SPD is invalid. Please, someone, correct me if I’m wrong.
July 23, 2013 at 10:36 pm #794354
trickycooljParticipantHey to be fair, I’ve found myself in auto-pilot heading for 99N and then realizing “oh crap not this time! Today is [insert activity that isn’t in the 99 corridor, is south or east] 99 doesn’t go there!” But even when that happens I’m in and out before the bus lane lines turn solid, which I presume when they’re dotted you’re free to move across the bus lane as needed.
July 23, 2013 at 10:38 pm #794355
SarahScootParticipantThe lane is not a bus-only lane until the crest of the bridge, at which point the lane lines become solid. It is not legal to cross through the bus lane at that point, but up until then, it is fine.
July 23, 2013 at 10:40 pm #794356
MagpieParticipantThe bus lane serves a wonderful purpose for those of us who commute by bus. Takes 10 to 15 minutes off of my commute, more if the traffic is really bad. What I hate are the morons who don’t know how to merge and pull in the bus lane and just stop till there is an opening instead of moving along and finding a spot.
The bus lane will serve even more of a purpose with the thousands of new people who are going to fill up all those new condos.
July 23, 2013 at 10:42 pm #794357
odrokuParticipantMore ticketing on the bridge! Far too many people cruising that bus lane on a daily basis. Just a few weeks ago, I nearly crushed my son when the driver had to jam the brakes because someone seemed to decide suddenly they no longer wanted to use 99 and failed to check to see if anyone was coming down the bus lane.
Want to be in the bus lane? Ride the bus. Feel like you don’t need to wait your turn in traffic like 99% of the other drivers? Risk a ticket.
July 23, 2013 at 11:42 pm #794358
WFMembermaybe SDOT ought to move the striping to the east, past the crest, so people can see options before deciding which route they feel works best
July 24, 2013 at 12:27 am #794359
JayDeeParticipantJust wait until next March, the striping will fade with the sand and the ill-advised studded tires (better tires are better than studs, and studs destroy the pavement) take care of the latest paint.
Ditto #4 and #12 — Know where you are going, or play the odds — you probably won’t get a ticket.
July 24, 2013 at 2:39 am #794360
pattileaParticipant#11 is why so many folks left this blog! So quick to jump om your behind, and so unfriendly!!!!
Jan I am NOT trying to be mean but you seem to jump so fast on people. And I am asking very kindly are you okay, or are you in pain? Some peeps that are in pain take it out on others,
July 24, 2013 at 2:48 am #794361
MrJTMemberOh pattilea, please feel free.
July 24, 2013 at 2:53 am #794362
pattileaParticipant???
July 24, 2013 at 3:08 am #794363
elikapekaParticipantThis may never happen again, but I agree with WF. If you can take either 99 or First Ave or Fourth Ave, it would be helpful and probably help traffic move better to be able to adjust your route to traffic. However, with the current striping, you have to make your choice before the crest of the bridge so you’re choosing blind. If the solid white line could be moved further east, then drivers could see the best option and choose accordingly.
July 24, 2013 at 3:17 am #794364
JanSParticipantnope…not in pain…just voicing my opinion on an open forum…the right of all who post here…so sorry…I have almost decided to not come here anymore because somehow, someone has decided that they don’t like my opinion on here, and some (as in Mr. JT) have no bones about making it personal. I have been in this community for 38 years. I love this community, and the people in it….but lately, well, I’m not sure why some have decided to make negative comments about anything I post.
My comment was not meant to be unfriendly, it was meant to point out the obvious. Obviously, the OP got caught. No one’s fault but their own, in my book. If I did what they did, and got caught, well, that would be my fault, wouldn’t it? Certainly not the SPD, who are just doing their job. Yes they are allowed to go from 99 to the through lanes that are 2 lanes over – they just need to do it in a timely fashion. I don’t do a daily commute, but if I did, I would certainly know where I need to be and when.
I’m getting tired of being singled out on here, while others whine away. You make it personal, I will respond personally. I don’t think there is anything wrong with expressing an opinion, and why do you all feel that I shouldn’t, that I should just go with the flow and simply agree with you all? If I’m not honest, what does that make me? Think about it.
Pattilea, I had a kidney transplant a month ago…a new lease on life…and I’m feeling pretty good, frankly :)
July 24, 2013 at 3:42 am #794365
KBearParticipant“maybe SDOT ought to move the striping to the east, past the crest, so people can see options before deciding which route they feel works best”
I guess that’s why it’s called a “bus lane”, rather than a “decide at the last minute and cut across two lanes of traffic while holding up all the buses all without signaling lane”.
