This time of year - when things can get hectic and our view of the world can sometimes be skewed - it is perhaps a good idea to spend a minute or two thinking about what matters. The blog gives all of us an opportunity to vent about the little (and big) things that drive us crazy. Let's use this thread to highlight some of the things that bring a smile to our faces. Here are a few off the top of my head. . . .
    -
I like the "walk all ways" intersection in the junction.
    -
I love the "crack prawns" at Lee's Asian.
    -
Our friends moved to Fresno and they come back for the holidays and we get to see them. We miss them and love the fact that they are very nostalgic for the funky little shops and the small town vibe of West Seattle. They ritually have a breakfast at Easy Street and they used to always get cinnamon rolls at Alki Bakery.
    -
I like the Grouchos in the woods, yarn bombs, the Walker Rock Garden and lots of other little things that make our community funky.
    -
I love the West Seattle Blog because it allows me to connect with people I normally wouldn't and provides me with a very local perspective of what is going on and what is important to people around me.
    -
I like walking along Alki Beach and love saying hello to dogs whether they are on a leash or off - it just doesn't bother me.
    -
I like Blackboard Bistro, Pizzeria 22, Elliott Bay Brewery, The Swinery, Talarico's, Jak's, West 5, A Terrible Beauty, Fresh Bistro, Mashiko, Spring Hill, Circa and many other local restaurants - sometimes it's hard to pick.
    -
I like our neighbors, our neighborhood and the friends my kids have chosen.
    -
I like that we are about 10 minutes from downtown or the freeways but it doesn't feel like we are that close.

  2. I am thankful for the sense of community i find everywhere i go in West Seattle

  3. I'm thankful there are people in West Seattle who take the time to remember how much we have to be thankful for. Makes me all warm and fuzzy on a chilly December morning.

There's so much to "like" about West Seattle that I could go on for pages. But here's a few quick things that come to mind:

I like almost all the restaurants in West Seattle but have a particular fondness for the sweet potato fries at Circa in the Admiral the pho at Pho Aroma on Delridge.
    -
I like strolling the Alaska Junction on a Sunday during the holidays, savoring the crisp smells, greetings of neighbors, assortment of unique shops and indulging my weakness for all things wonderful at Bakery Nouveau.
    -
I also like spending time in the Morgan Junction: Enjoying a beer at the Beveridge Place with my dog at my side, Pizza and salad at Zeeks, the incredible warm Pita bread at Kokoras.
    -
I too love walking at Alki and Jack Block viewing the amazing scenery with people and dog watching galore.
    -
I like that we're part of the City but still have green spaces with a rural feel where there's burbling creeks, wildlife and even a horse or two.
    -
And I love the West Seattle Blog for making our community even more of a community. West Seattle rocks!

Ditto on the "crack prawns" at Lee's Asian.

Really? An opportunity to say something nice generates 4 comments and a discussion of dog urine gets 25. . . . . .never mind.

LOL! Take a few deep breaths. You just started this post nine hours ago so many of those who view the WSB were either at work or on their way to it. Those same people are just getting home now. They have kids that need attention, spouses to speak with, animals to feed, emails to answer and add in all the preparations for the upcoming Holidays…

I just got home from working almost 11.5 hours myself at a job I am very thankful to have. :)

    I'm thankful for...

... the wind that blows off Puget Sound carrying that saltwater scent my way

... and the various nesting bald eagles that I never tire of watching

... and the sound of the far away train whistles

... and the Crispy Garlic Chicken from Buddha Ruksa and the friends that enjoy it with me

... and all the places that I can launch a kayak

... and especially for the carolers who came to my front door last night - I was surprised at how happy that made me:-)

    Where to start?

Thankful for my good dog and the cool neighborhood businesses who hand him treats every chance he can take advantage of.

Thankful for Lincoln and Me-Kwa-Mooks and Schmitz and all the other wonderful parks and, most especially, the parks employees and volunteers who so wonderfully care for them. So very thankful for good & kind neighbors. Thankful for Elliott Bay Brewhouse's Demolition Ale and for Beveridge Place Pub for opening early to host the women's world cup viewing.

Thankful to the Fauntleroy YMCA and club member Amber for re-starting my friend's heart. He's doing great and there are many people who love you guys!!!

Thankful for the holiday lights I see everywhere!

So very thankful and grateful to Tracy and this terrific blog and the very faithful and thoughtful readers.

  12. Nice idea, 2MuchWhine:

I am thankful for caring (and fun!) neighbors who truly look after each other.

I love living in a place where I get stopped dead in my tracks- almost daily- by the incredible mountain views, sunsets, and night sky that we enjoy.

I REALLY love being able to walk to so many interesting shops and restaurants- some that have been in the same families for generations and some owned by new, creative entrepreneurs.

I'm thankful for places like the farmer's market, West Seattle Produce, and PCC (to name just a few) that make it fun to shop for really good food!

I love that we have the Admiral and ArtsWest Theaters right on our main street, as well as other civic, private and church groups that support the arts.

I'm thankful for the diversity of people around me and the richness they bring to my life, even when we disagree.

These are just a few things- there is so much more. I guess this time of year I especially appreciate people sharing stories of kindness on The Blog.

Like all of you have mentioned I am thankful for the WS Blog. I get the opportunity to read about: the amazing & giving people at Nucor, the students at Madison Middle School who collected food for Madison MS families, the many loving West Seattle folks who open their homes to animals that need and deserve a loving and safe home, West Seattle YMCA and their annual 'Partners With Youth' campaign that allows the YMCA to give scholarships to families and individuals for: before and after school childcare, YMCA gym memberships, swim lessons, an opportunity for a child to play soccer, basketball, etc ... , Nickelsville and all the community building happening there, the beautiful photos many West Seattle folks share via the WS Blog, happenings and events in our West Seattle schools, etc ... Thank you West Seattle Blog for making West Seattle like my little own ... "Mayberry." Blessings!

Thankful for another year without cancer returning. And thankful that gave me the ability to guide my son for another year into adulthood--just give me three more years and I'll feel he'll be good to go. :->

  15. I am thankful for Next to Nature for hosting and providing supplies for rescued cats. I am equally thankful for the West Seattlites (and a few from other areas) that visit, support, and adopt these rescued cuties.

  16. I'm thankful for my next door neighbors who are always willing to feed my cat and watch our house when we're away; for the West Duwamish Greenbelt, a whole forest right at my doorstep; for Nature Consortium, working so hard to restore the greenbelt and bring art to the community; Youngstown Cultural Arts Center and all the great events there, especially the Cabiri performances for Halloween; for Ephesus, Jak's Steakhouse, Mashiko, and the Celtic Swell; Zippy's, Proletariat Pizza, 88 Restaurant and Full Tilt Ice Cream; Cycle University that keeps me on two wheels; West Seattle Animal Hospital that has saved my cat's life twice; the West Seattle Farmer's Market, the Southwest Library, and the West Duwamish Bike Trail; and Meander's. Oh! Meander's!

    I needed this thread today.
I am thankful for Hammerhead and the work she does for all creatures, great and small.
Glad to have NV in the neighborhood, to watch and hope for humanity as they try and build one another up, and for the great support of the community.
Thankful for the neighborhood Planned Parenthood, that it has survived another year. Love watching White Center grow, new businesses, the community they are making.
Thankful that my truck has not had the gas siphoned, and that I have a job to go to.

  19. If I look around from my current physical location on the couch, I am thankful:
    •To have food and shelter.
•For the wonderful assortment of furry/finned creatures that always create laughter, cursing, head-scratching and the true things that are wonderful. (The newest little bugger is snoring right now and settling in, so I’m particularly thankful for that right now.)
•Little things that give joy (too many to describe but one of today’s best was the most wonderful leaf colored up to perfection for the First Day of Winter)

A little further view outward that I am thankful for:
•Many friends, great neighbors and many acquaintances (old and new) made in W Sea over the last 12 years on the island and how much I appreciate living here.

    Further out, but still closer:
•Family and friends who are not so close via physical locale but always there no matter what we all have going on. Some of us talk once a day/week/month/year, and it never matters because we always get right to the important stuff that really matters or just have a really good time catching up.

Furthest away physically, but closest to my heart in many ways:
•The memories and always-guiding influence of those who are now gone – hugely thankful for their guidance and love. I miss them and am truly thankful for them.

Circles, yes completely. Thankful for them and the tiny degrees of separation that are so few in this community. Really just wonderful.

Happy holidays and best wishes for the upcoming year,
    S

  20. As small business owners' here in West Seattle, we are thankful for all of our many customers who come and support us year after year, and tell us how much they're glad we're here. It makes coming to work every day a little more fun, and makes us grateful to be part of such a great community. We also love the way West Seattle comes together time after time to support people in need, offer words of encouragement or support, and give of themselves.
