Raves for the neighbor who returned a piece of wet rained on mail that had blown away from my mailbox down on 60th near Alki. You are a really good person! I totally needed that piece of mail and searched the streets several times after the wind whisked it away from me on Monday the 17th. How surprised was I to find it set at my door on Tuesday the 18th!!! It was an important piece of mail - but even more valuable was being reminded how great neighbors can be!

I needed to read this, Diane, because after reading the lost signs thread I was reminded how much I DON'T love people.
    :-)

  3. Kayleigh2, agreed...how something like a simple sidwalk sign can degrade into that is beyond me, I will not post on it.

It takes so little to be nice to others and you get what you give.

  4. Diane - Good to hear. I live a couple blocks from you and find our lil hood filled with great people, watching out for one another.

Diane - I feel that way about most of my neighbors too. Wish more people would take the time to get out and get to know each other.

Thanks for sharing a good story for today:)

I always meant to thank the person that mailed in my rent check for me. I sealed the env and put a stamp on it and had it in my coat pocket to mail that day. When I looked in my pocket later that day, it was gone. I called my landlord the next day and he said he got it. Again, thank you.

As far as that lost sign thread...all I can do is shake my head at where some posters chose to take it and throw in their personal opinions about why it was ok to steal. Toxic people are janky.

That's great to hear! My neighbor did something really cool, too. He has a big tree (read lots of leaves on our side) and he hired someone to remove them form his side AND our side... totally above and beyond the call of duty.

  9. We also have a generous neighbor - several years ago we decided to have a tree removed from our property and our neighbor came over and insisted on paying for half the cost because he said it improved his view and he appreciated that!

  10. My neighbor used to let us know if the cops were coming from her upstairs apartment when we were throwing parties. It wasn't "I called the cops on you!" it was "Hey... quiet down for five minutes!" lol

  11. When we were burglarized two years ago, our upstairs neighbor happened upon the scene almost immediately (we think he scared them away when he came down the stairs) He noticed the broken window, and tested the door. When it was unlocked, he came in to be sure we weren't inside, injured or worse. Once he found that we weren't home, he found all of our cats except one, took them to his apartment so they'd be safe and secure, and called me at work to tell me to come home immediately.

The burglars had completely destroyed much of our home, going so far as to tear up books and stomp apart bookshelves when they found that we didn't have any valuables. When all the police reports, etc were done my partner began to clean up (and look for our very-well-hidden kitty!) He needed to be alone for a bit to work through his anger. Our neighbor took me upstairs and fed me vodka and valium until I was calm.

Thank god for good neighbors. We are so very lucky here. Many people would have pretended not to see the broken window, or would have assumed we already knew about it, and just gone about their day. It takes a special kind of person to care about their neighbors and go above and beyond by securing our most valuable "possessions" - the cats - even before calling us.

THAT is why we live in West Seattle. Neighbors like that are the rule, not the exception, here. I am very thankful to be able to live in this community.

  14. As my dog bolted out the door this afternoon, when I was late to pick up my son from school and holding a wiggly protesting 1 year old at the top of steep concrete stairs, I remembered two awesome neighbors who have helped me out in a very similar situation. One who grabbed the pup and held her until I could get her, and the other who returned her to the yard when we were not even home.

thanks for the reminder to thank. It is easy to complain, but rarely do we remember to thank.
