Christmas Eve, noon. Packed but EVERYONE WAS NICE and they had enough help. And they had a cute trombone player out front who is a bookkeeper and played in the rain as a volunteer.

you are right they have nice staff; it is too bad their prices are obscenely high as compared to the competition.

Their quality is also obscenely better. Also, I'll pay a premium to avoid the grumpies and long lines of other markets....

an orange is an orange. safeway they were $0.50/lb versus $1.49.

the yogurt i like (exact same product) is $3.29 at the met and $2.50 at safeway or qfc. thus how is a quality of paying more for the same product better?

it must be nice to be able to afford the premium some of us don't have that luxury and have very tight budgets.

  5. Hooper...I don't have a car (stolen). I live across the street from the new Safeway to be. In the meantime, I'm left with few choices. I shop sales, I buy local, and what's in season...and it's Christmas, so, dang it, get some good cheer on, will ya, please? Met market is wonderful, and yes, some things are pricey. And...quality IS better. Happy you have a vehicle to get you to the cheaper places...there's always a bright side for you, isn't there? :)

the daylight hours each day is increasing

  7. first positive thing I think you've said...and , yes, that's a good thing..longer day light hours, even if just 2 minutes :)

  8. Hooper Once again, Safeway is a huge, national corp that likely has a lot more buying power than an independent such as Met
Market. That could explain the difference in price on the yogurt.

It could also explain the difference in price on the oranges. Or, perhaps, the oranges at Met are of a much better quality. I think it's likely they are from a different source.

Sure, it was very mean of Safeway to temporarily close the Admiral store, so now you are forced to either drive to J. Square, and deal with the horrendous parking, or, about 4.5-5 miles each way to Roxbury. Jan is handling the inconvenience just fine without a car and without complaint.

Why take your frustration over the Admiral Safeway closure out on Met Market?

it is just disappointing that the met does not even try to compete.

MM puts out some wicked awesome coupons though. Free 6 oz. wedge of Jarlsberg starting tomorrow. Free 5 oz. organic salad through today. What?! Local store?! Free organic food?! It's like Christmas every day!

  11. My backyard puts out free organic food, too, but nothing as yummy as Jarlsberg wedges, I'm afraid. Unfortunately, I don't get MM coupons in the mail, 'cuz I don't live in the RWS.

Soon, I may not even be able to get a Zippy's Burger . . .

mirabile — however your name is pronounced — I'm glad it's Christmas for some people every day, but please spare a thought for the couponless among us . . .

DP: Oh dear. Yes, that was terribly thoughtless of me. It must be such a hardship to grow your own organic food in your own backyard. Such horrors outside the RWS...

Please spare a thought for those of us with Black Thumbs of Death and only balconies. (Yes, I know there's container gardening, but it is conquered by the BToD.)

    O! Wherefore art thou, mirabile?

A rose (in Seattle) by any other thumb would be as black.

Were I to appear 'neath your balcony some cheeseless eve, would you lower down a wedge?

Met Market is my go-to shop for speciality items, like amazing cheese. I go knowing I will pay a premium, but feel the quality and service make it worth it. They are a great option, I just can't afford to shop there all the time.

It's great to have choices isn't it? Imagine a life without them. I just watched a documentary on North Korea and it made me thankful for the abundance, the choices and ability to speak our minds that we have here in the States.

DP, again you provided my daily giggle. At my house I would be ROFL-PUTAPH, (...and pet hair)!

    Happy Holidays all!

  17. Met Market is my go-to shop for speciality items, like amazing cheese.

Well, what a coincidence, G-Nymph. Met Market is MY go-to shop as well.

    For amazing cheese SAMPLES.

    Here's the drill:

    1) Before visiting the store, put on your best duds, so as not to appear suspicious.

    2) Make a pass or two through the aisles and load up your cart with some of the more expensive canned items, so you'll look like a "high-roller."

    3) If there are samples of interesting cheeses already out there, which there usually are, then make at least three passes by each, taking care to select a new toothpick each time around.

    4) If there no suitable samples out, then approach the staff and ask to try some specific items behind the counter. After each sample, thank the staff and make an insightful comment, like Ohh. Nice finish on that one! or What did you say the cream content was on that again?

    5) Before checking out, leisurely place most (not all) of the items in your cart neatly back on the shelves. ("Whoops! Guess I didn't have such a jones for larks' tongues in aspic, after all!")

    6) Always be sure to purchase a few things and be extra nice to the clerks. While you're at it, try to say something nice about the management as well.

    Wait one week.

    Repeat.

    DP,

It sounds like you took the same, "Intro to meats and cheeses" course from Hickory Farms that my G-ma did. ;) I never knew there were specific phrases I should have been using though. Thanks for letting me know. I'll be sure to use them next time I'm there, but to leave without purchasing at least one of the sampled cheeses would be almost impossible!

  19. All I can say is:

    Thank you!
    Thank you!
    Thank you!

(For helping to subsidize my sample habit.)

P.S. I bet I could teach your Grams a thing or two. [Wink!]

  20. MM is great for some things -- not the staples you might get at the Safeway-that-was but I purchased a NY roast that was aged for 21 days at $14.99 a pound. Expensive? Not really - it was aged, and trimmed well before I purchased it. Sure I could buy it cheaper at Costco or Cash N Carry, but I'd get to throw a third of the roast away after trimming it, and would need to age it myself. For Christmas Eve dinner it was delightful, and better yet, it was enjoyed by all. Plus I only had to drive a mile to get it

  21. i think it's great that we have such great choices...

i visited morgan thriftway, PCC and Met Market all in the same day last week looking for Burts Bees Man Soap... and struck out three times.

but i had a great day anyway and came home with some great deals.

found the soap at the madison co-op the next day...
along with everything else i purchased at all three shops :)

  23. A West Seattle friend of mine says he always chuckles when he remembers a sign that hung in a hardware store years ago...

"We have no quarrel with those who charge less. They know what their service is worth."
