who thought it would be so fun to spin cookies in the Hillcrest Presb. church parking lot at 10 PM. The next time I won't just be walking towards you with the phone up to my ear, I really will be calling the authorities. BTW - there's a caretaker who LIVES at that church, let alone the neighbors, who REALLY don't want to hear your buzzy little motor zooming around at TEN AT NIGHT. If you're gonna have your fun, fine, do it at a reasonable hour.

Rant: to the inconsiderate doofus riding the go-cart in the snow

Um, MargL I think you mean doughnuts. Ha-ha-ha.
Posted 3 years ago # -
lol cookies loves it :-) that's cute :-)
and doofus is one of the best words ever!
I'll add to this rant....
To the person who drives up and down my street
blasting earsplitting music in their car
late at night, you are a doofus
Hey wait, I'm not done....
to all the doofuses/doofi? who tailgate and speed in the icy conditions, please stay off the road.
OK, I feel better now. :-)Posted 3 years ago # -
Do enough doughnuts and you'll TOSS your cookies.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Maybe she did mean "cookies" - I heard my BF refer to what I know as "doughnuts" as "Brodies" yesterday. I'm checking http://www.urbandictionary.com! I recommend that link for the insanely bored BTW.
People are so dumb. I swear. Snow falls and it just kills some people's brain cells.

I can see the parking lot behind SW Community Center and moronic drivers (aka doofus) use the lot to do donuts and other ballet kind of acts with their cars. Its frightening to watch when two of them are there "dancing" together. Why the center doesn't block the entrance is beyond me. And so is it beyond me why people would take on such a stupid activity. Or do I forget how much some people "are" their cars.

lol - my dad always called them 'spinning cookies' - go figure. I will always remember the winter day he was driving my brother and I in to school in his '29 Dodge milk truck (rebuilt - no seat belts those days) and he pulled into the parking lot on the ice and the truck just kept going around. We were going slow and stopped after a 360 but it was quite exciting!
pigeonmom - I usually go with doofuses as a plural but like doofi, too. :-)Posted 3 years ago # -
Ah. Maybe 'spinning cookies' is a regional thing. I guess you learn something every day.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Actually, I've known several people who got a driving lesson from their parents about driving in the snow by taking them to parking lots to do doughnuts. It does allow some safe "practice" in handling a car during icy conditions.
However, an ATV driver - now that's a doofus.

I fail to see how doing "cookies" ( :P ) in an empty parking lot is more idiotic then driving on a busy street.
It may not have a whole lot of productive use to people other then the driver, but if the driver enjoys it and is having a good time not hurting anyone I don't see a problem at all. Perhaps some of you should take some notes on being more positive and enjoying yourselves from these people, instead of calling someone names and in all actuality giving yourself reasons to be angry to no actual purpose; all because they were making noise at 10:00PM.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Caduceus, the OP stated *have your fun, just do it at a reasonable hour*. 10 pm is the chosen LEGAL cut-off for excessive noise. This gives the majority a specific period to attempt sleep whether you have children or early shift work. I have relied on that cut off myself.
Lived next door to a very enthusiastic evangelical church that preferred to conduct their shouting sermons and screaming (singing) with all the windows open and a speaker system facing the street. The whole neighborhood would collectively be relieved when 10 pm came around and we could actually enforce the noise ordinance.
And lest any church goers take offense, no one found this the least bit pleasant. We are not talking about a chorus singing in tune.
Again, the OP isn't talking about kids playing, she's describing essentially a lawn mower engine in her ear. Justifiable complaint.

My dad actually taught me to drive in the snow by bringing me to an icy parking lot and slipping and sliding. It does work wonders and was a bit of fun, too. :)

I wasn't replying to the complaint, I was replying to the negativity in this thread, which stemmed from the OP.
Just because there is a law doesn't make it right, or even sensible. I have no problem getting to sleep and we have a house full of "young-adults" next door that party all night long at least 3 times a week and can be heard at the end of the block until 5AM.
I've never understood why people are bothered by "noise" when even a smoke detector alarm is easy to ignore if you have any self-discipline at all and can control your thoughts accordingly.
And personally I don't view the argument of legality as valid. People like to forget that we once had segregation laws.
I guess my point is, don't give yourself reasons to be angry and negative/hateful (although hateful is a strong word) towards people for minuscule reason like noise, when it isn't the noise that's keeping you up/annoying you it's your inability to not focus on the noise. And calling something stupid because that particular activity isn't something you enjoy when the person doing it probably enjoys it very much.

Their are children in neighborhoods Caduceaus. Would you like to come over to tell a two year old that they just dont have enough self-discipline to ignore the noise outside?? Or would you prefer to be the one to spend the entire next day with the tired two year old b/c those of who have been around kids no that isnt fun.
Posted 3 years ago # -
We have a young girl who is disabled across the street from the house. After my mother and I talked with them after the people moved in next door to us, she is able to ignore it just fine.
So yes, I would tell the child they should try to ignore it, and with enough time they would be able to.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Good luck with that.
And please get back to me when you do get to experience that with a toddler or baby that for matter b/c i think you will be quite surprised as to what happens.

:-) Well ranting made me feel better but Caduceus's response made me chuckle ... well, and roll my eyes a bit.
Thanks for the chuckle, Caduceus.I'll be sure to take my 2-year-old and my visiting manic-depressive mother right out to Zen meditation and yoga classes right after this snow melts. :-)
Happy holidays!

Legality is a tool when other methods fail, not a rationalization or authoritarian position. Further, singular anecdotal experiences does not a solution make. It is simply what worked for you, nothing more.

Assuming the events posted were basically what happened...
She was simply angry, right off the bat "threatening" to call the police. I re-read to make sure and she never mentioned asking the person to just stop..
When one chooses to live around other people, like say in a city. One has to compromise, and be aware that other people share the world as well.
People simply get irritated at things they don't see as socially normal. 10PM is late for someone with a morning job, and would probably see that as normal. But probably doesn't stop to think how many people have night jobs and are sleeping while they are making noise during the day.
Doing burnouts and doughnuts is normal for people who are into cars, whether it's racing (legal or illegal) building or selling. Yet here people are calling it stupid.
The point is whether or not something works, and to what effect.
Obviously her effect didn't work out so well as she was still angry even after the time that passed that took her to get on here to post about it.
I am simply suggesting an alternative that works for myself and the people I've talked to about it, including a seven year old disabled girl, she can deny my proposition if she wishes of course. But what does she have to lose?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Yeah, chuckling here too, whatever.
And remember the famous last words of doofi -
"heh, heh, heh, watch this!"
Posted 3 years ago # -
You know what's got me upset the past few days - if you aren't ready for a dose of negativity DON'T READ A THREAD THAT HAS THE WORD RANT IN IT.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Actually I -did- go out to ask the person to stop. I was walking towards them and they zoomed off up the hill before I even got a chance to be heard over the noise of their motor. They made the decision not to discuss the issue of whether it was polite to keep the neighborhood awake at 10:10PM. I'm fine with them having fun... it was just the time it was happing.
There are people who are 'into' guns and shooting things and if this person was across the street shooting at beercans on a stump but not hurting anyone or damaging other people's property (besides the stump) I would still go over there and ask them to stop... 'course they'd probably just point the gun at me at that point... Yes, we share the world but why do I have to quietly accept the fact that this person was bored and wanted to make a lot of noise when I wanted to sleep? Why can't they accept that people and kids in the neighborhood sleep at 10PM?Posted 3 years ago # -
I don't complete agree with Caduceus, but I can see his point. Sometimes you just gotta let people have their fun. Jeez - how often do we get the chance to spin cookies/doughnuts in Seattle. If rules/laws were never broken this world would be an extremely boring place.
On a personal note, a couple of weeks back I was getting ready for bed at about 11:30 on a Sunday night and after turning off the TV realized there was a very loud thumping beat coming from somewhere. I originally thought it must be a car driving by, but upon further investigation discovered it was the neighbors partying like it was 1984 (Psycho Killer by The Talking Heads). Adults (probably in their 30's or 40's) were dancing and rocking out at 11:30pm on a Sunday. The music was so loud I could actually decipher the lyrics while lying in bed.
Instead of calling the police about a noise disturbance or fuming all night until I wrote a rant on the WSB, I fell asleep smiling thinking it's cool we live across the street from full-grown adults that still know how to rock out. These people hardly ever have parties, so let them have their fun.

Marg my point wasn't necessarily to just submit, it was to put other perspectives on the table. Since you seemed genuinely upset over the ordeal.
Now if it's some jerkoff doing it every night, that is different, but I'm guessing this was a one time thing?
Anyways I'm glad to hear you tried to approach him and ask him to stop, that shows a lot about your character. Kudos, my dear. :]

Caduceus - You're young. I'm guessing that (like me at your age) you sleep like a rock. I could sleep through an airshow back in the day. Then I had my first child. It seems like a sleep switch must have been turned off in my brain, noise that I would have slept through with ease woke me up in an instant. Only on good nights do I get to fall back to sleep quickly. So doofuses who wake me up for no good reason really try my patience. Just for perspective...

Who goes to bed at 10pm?!? AND what's a 2 yr old doing out in the snow at that time?!? Leave the go-cart drivin' booger eatin' moron alone he aint hurting anybody!
