Rant : respect the leash law and pick up the dog poo

  1. i dont know why people think its ok to let there dog of leash in public. just because your dog is harmless dosent give you the right to break the leash law. and as for the poo. if you cant pick it up, you should'nt have a dog,

And, vrbal, I agree; there is no such thing as a 'harmless' dog.

  3. Well said vrbal. I've been meaning to post something myself because I have had a lot of bad experiences with dog poo recently.

There are accidents (maybe the dog owner brought 2 bags but needed 3). I am sure there are more good dog owners than bad ones.

I am just so sick of stepping in poo while I mow my lawn or parking strip. I am sick of mowing the grass then coming out the next day to see a nice big poo pile making a statement in my parking strip. My yard is 95% fenced in so I am not sure how a dog is getting on to my property to poop on a weekly basis.. either he/she is off leash and roaming around or the owner is "walking" their dog in my yard. Most likely, it is the former which is ofcourse illegal.

Also, please take your bag of poop to your house instead of XYZ neighbors trash can, I have 2 bags of poop that weren't tied off properly and have been stuck to the bottom of my can for several months. Not sure what is more gross, having to see it/smell it often or rip off the bandaid and remove it manually from the bottom of the can. Also, I found a "gift bag" in a small tree on my property one day. Not kidding.

Those who are responsible owners, thank you. Those who are not, please clean up your act. Don't bring your dog to an open space and ignore the no dog sign so you can throw the ball to fluffy. I can't tell you how many dogs I see on school grounds and in parks with kids who are at soccer practice, etc. As someone who has been bitten in the past, you are breaking the law and giving good owners a bad name. You are also rolling the dice, if your dog bites a child or adult, you are on the line for atleast a fine.

  4. I know this subject comes up all the time but the problem doesn't seem to go away. I don't care how friendly your dog is - I walk with a child who is afraid of dogs. Your 'friendly' dog who comes over to sniff him terrifies him.

Totally irresponsible for someone to let their dog come over and sniff a child fearful or not. Sorry you had to experience that Pam.
I always carry enough bags when walking my dogs. I learned the hard way after forgetting just once. I found a McD's burger wrapper on the ground and had to use that. (Poetic justice says I) When round two of my dog doing her business occurred on that same walk I had to use a large leaf; and carry that package and the McD's package home. Haven't forgotten since then.

  6. I've stopped running in West Seattle parks because of the number of times I've encountered unfriendly or downright aggressive dogs on pathways and walking trails.

Now I get to cope with the people who let their dogs run loose in the street, which I seriously don't understand. Even if you don't care about being a good neighbor in this respect, wouldn't you worry about the dog getting hit by a car?

These are two of my major pet peeves. I was so mad when I stepped in dog poo at Lincoln park one day just feet from the play ground. I'm just glad it was me and not my daughter.

And Schmitz Park reserve apparently is a giant off leash dog park. I went there a few weeks ago for the probably my second time. Beautiful park but all the people we encountered had dos with them and they were off leash. A couple had them under decent control or leashed them when they saw us, but there was a number of them where we saw the dogs long before or after we saw the owner. Kind of sad because I would like to return to the park but not sure I want to deal with the dogs and annoying owners.

  8. take out the c,m and z and what have you got from Schmitz and our canine friends?

Once I forgot doggie doo bags for my wonderful girl, Holly. Some of you might know her. She left a present and I made certain I went back to clean it up after her walk. Courtesy is also part of responsibility. Something that is definitely lacking with some of our citizens.

Lets start a new city agency. The Poo Patrol. Let the (non-violent)inmates get out in the open air of our parks and pick up poo. Diggin' up the doo.

Let me just add to the opposite side of the rant a thank you to the dog owners that do clean up after their dogs, follow the leash laws and keep them out of places doggies shouldn't be (like playgrounds).

  10. Today I was tempted to use the chalk for my daughter's preschool class to write in big letters on the blacktop "CLEAN UP YOUR DOG'S POO" next to the grassy area by Hillcrest Presbyterian. That field is used for the school kids to run around in as well as a practice area for a kids soccer club.

Someone in the area thinks it's a great area to exercise their dogs (fine) without cleaning up after (not so fine).

Luckily most observant 4 year olds will stop and scream "DOG POOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!" if they find it.
And they scream louder if they manage to step in it.

First, I agree with what you're saying, but I just want to reveal another side:

FTR, I always pick up after my dog. I also never let her off leash. So I am NOT the person you are talking about. I have, once or twice however, been caught without a bag. This happened the other day actually when I had just returned from out of town and went to pick up my dog at the dog sitters, by Pet Elements. My dog went over to the parking strip and did her thing. I started checking all pockets and purse for bags, found none, and starting to walk to my car which was a block away. As I turned to leave, a huge dude started yelling at me and berating me. He then was trying to make me stay so he could give me a bag--he said, by intimidating me. That is NOT going to encourage me to accept a bag OR return to pick it up. He got in his car and followed me to my car. I was so freaked out when I finally reached my car (and by the way I had my kid in tow!), I got in it and drove away. He then followed me in his car. I finally had to call 911!. That dude was psycho and I am not saying any of you are like that, but that's what happens when people feel super entitled and RIGHT.

So ya, I get that it's annoying when people don't pick up their poop, but everybody makes mistakes and I would encourage all of you to not make snap judgements (if you are so inclined to) and to never harass people even if you think you may have accurately assessed the situation. My son and I were totally traumatized and of course we did not return to pick up the poop.

Also, and this is just my view, but people sometimes act lame when they are suffering. That is when they drive poorly (my pet peeve) and forget to pick up the poop; at least most of the time.

I never pick up after my chupacabra though. ;)
