MTSRParticipantReceived an email from a neighbor that a man and his 3 young daughters, buckets in hand, were harvesting our plums without our permission. They were on their way home (to the high mortgage homes on the bluff on 42nd) before my neighbor could confront them. She noticed the man even had one of the girls on his shoulders to harvest. Granted, this portion of the tree hangs over the sidewalk, but is CLEARLY on PRIVATE property behind a fence. I went home at lunch only to find that EVERY plum within reach without a ladder is GONE! I can understand popping one in your mouth as you walk by (I plead guilty) but to make the decision that branches hanging over a fence that is 8 feet off the ground is open territory just befuddles me. I wonder what he said to the girls? Maybe something like “Hey Girls, grab your buckets and we can go steal some plums!”

Ms. SparklesParticipantWhile I understand your dismay, I think – technically – anything that overhangs the public easment is actually in the public domain.

JoBParticipantjust because you can doesn’t mean you should…
what kind of values is this father teaching his children by not asking the person who tended the tree that grew the fruit if it was ok?

KevinParticipantI would be mad as “ell.” I would have called them out… or grabbed some pictures as the “crime” was being committed! Amazing what some folks will do …

anonymeParticipantI completely agree with JoB.
So, if one of these kids leaves her bike outside the property line, does that give me the right to snatch it?
The laws regarding the public areas just outside of property lines are murky indeed, and wide open to exploitation. Homeowners are expected to maintain these areas, yet seemingly have no rights regarding ‘property’ – such as landscaping, that they’ve put money and effort into. I’ve actually caught people trying to dismantle my rockery. Ridiculous.
This father should be ashamed.

BreezyParticipantWe have experienced this kind of thing with both vegetable gardens and flowers. A shame to teach his children to take what isn’t theirs to take. By the way, it sounds like you know where he lives – maybe you could stop by and speak with him?

JoBParticipanta Great idea Breezy
but one that i confess i haven’t been able to bring myself to do after the dogs caught the neighbor kid helping himself to the bounty in my vegetable garden :(
what do you say that will make a difference?
i don’t know.

VanessaParticipantRUDE! RUDE! RUDE! Way to go, parents, teaching your kids to just take what’s out there, even if it doesn’t belong to you.
My mother would have taught me, to kindly knock on the owners door, and ask permission to pick just a FEW of THEIR plums. The owners would have either said that they prefer you didn’t or would have said, sure you can have a few.

BreezyParticipantJoB, I once caught a neighbor picking my sweet peas, a flower planted in honor of my mother. She chuckled, said they reminded her of HER mother (who unlike my own was still alive), but when I told her why I had planted them, how young my mom was when she passed away, she got it. People are weird about plants..they just figure if they’re there and they can reach ’em, they’re free to do so. This behavior should cease once you are no longer a child. But in truth, if they’re an adult, there’s probably not much you can say that’ll make a difference, but it might make you feel better unless they’re belligerent :(

mav0414Participanttwo weeks ago, someone(s) came into our front yard and trimmed off over 100 of our hydrangea flowers. Beautiful, blue flowers.
no ask, wait till we are gone…..sign of what this world is coming too.
hope they enjoyed their wedding or other event with their stole flowers.
prompted me to buy and set up a surveillance video set from Costco.

smokeycretin9ParticipantJust once I would love to have the culprit read about their actions here on the blog, and apologize for it.

JanSParticipantsmokey, no kidding. Are we the odd ones because the thought of trespassing and just taking never occurs to us? I’m older than quite a few on here, I think (66), and is it a generational thing? I just don’t get it.

2 Much WhineParticipantI confess! I snapped off a twig of rosemary from a giant bush (among many) overhanging the sidewalk in a rockery a few blocks from my house. My plant bit the dust and I didn’t have a chance to plant a new one. At the time I figured nobody would mind because there was so much of it but perhaps I was wrong. It made my lemon, rosemary chicken a hit but I’ll likely spend eternity in a Hell filled with people stealing pumpkins from me and smashing them in my driveway. Yet another one of my questionable choices. I’m sorry.

JoBParticipant2 much whine… which house ;->

JanSParticipant2 much whine….you’re back?

miwsParticipantI don’t recall the specific topic, but I think within the last couple of months or so, a person claiming to be the “culprit” in the incident that the OP was complaining about, came clean and posted an apology here.
Traffic related, if I recall…

Genesee HillParticipantI stole cigarettes from my dad’s drugstore when I was 16 years old. Back in 1967. Sorry, dad.

sacatoshParticipantMTSR: we are near you and have plenty if you’d like to come and pick some. Can’t support the whole town, but I’d be happy to share some with you. Email me at this same username at gmail dot com.

lindaParticipantThis happened to us last year, notice the tree was heavy with ripe fruit one day, came out the next day to find the tree completely harvested to 12′ in the air. The tree is entirely on private property with unfortunately easy public access. We never did figure out the culprits but have now posted a huge no trespassing sign on the fence located in front of this tree.
There was so much fruit, I would gladly have shared if the culprits would have done me the courtesy of asking.

Driez206MemberI don’t understand the mentality either of taking what is not yours. When my wife and I walk are dog we love to look at the flowers that people have planted, its a joy. The other day even as were admiring someone’s dahlia’s they gave us 5 or 6, which I thought was very cool. I get asking to take a few but harvesting them like they are yours is wrong.
