Rant - people who leave their dogs outside during freezing temps

If you can please leave your pets inside just because they are large dogs does not mean they don't feel the cold.

i have two large dogs that hate to be inside...they are more then welcome to lay by the fire but..maybe they think we are boring..will pace and claw the door to go outside..even in these tempartures..

But this poor german shephard has only a picnic table to lie down on, no ffod or water is left out for him and shen the winds chill factor rises we can hear him howl, he is freezing! This family has a beagle that apparently stays inside since we only see it during the warmer days. Looking out my kitchen window I can see this poor dog laying with its chin down on the cold picnic table with no shelter or anyway to get out of the cold day after day and night after night. It is always out in their backyard so I am sure no one ever walks the dog much less plays with it.

When we had our dog she had a heated pad in her dog house which we built and during the freezing temps left her inside while we were at work. She was also terrified of thunder and lightening.

  4. Then you need to call animal control right NOW or call me directly. Or even go to them and tell them that they BY LAW must provide food, water and shelter for there animals. GET PICTURES. I have dogloo if they should need one. Step up.

umm you better not be talking about my german shepard..although i dont think he will be able to fit under my picnic table...he choses to stay outside all winter long..he doesnt like the house because its to hot...so we open up our garage ..that is left open to him 24 hours a day...that has his food and water and 4 couchs with blankets and yet he would rather lay on our front porch and howl at the ambulance and fire trucks...probally should check with the family before crying wolf to the animal control people..ps my other dog who is 14 is a mutt not a beagle..and he is the smart one laying by the fire :)))

No it isn't your dogs I am talking about because the garage for this family only opens from the front and we have seen the inside of their garage from yardsales past and there is no room for 4 coucnhes, believe me with all the boxes, etc... And yes their other dog is a beagle. I have tried in the past to speak to the family but no one is ever home, I have left notes on their front door.

Good for calling luckymom30. We saw a dog last night outside the Feedback inside a VW/Subaru type car barking and howling around 11pm or so- owners nowhere in sight. Popped into both BP and Feedback to let mgmt know about the dog and to please ask around. Its just sad. Leave the dog at home!

    Luckymom30,
Do you have an update on your oblivious, callous neighbors and their poor pet they leave to suffer in these frigid temperatures? Did they provide any shelter for the dog? Did animal control take the dog? Is it still left outside? What, if anything, has happened? I feel terrible for the poor dog.

I did call Animal Control and unfortunately they can not do anything because they are short-staffed. So I knocked on their door again yesterday and again this morning trying to check someone home but no luck. I will not give up!

Remember that dog in South Seattle I think it was Kent last year who was chained in the backyard, forced to stand in mud in all weather, I called so many times about that and lcuky that wonderful woman (don't remember her name) took the dog in even though she already had afew other dogs. I might look that story up and get her name and maybe she can help.

Thanks for the update. Is there any way to get food, water or some bedding over the fence to the dog in the meantime? Can the Seattle police department do anything or will they not respond to animal welfare calls? If you want to send me the address we might be able to look up contact info and call them. My email is mhadd61 at yahoo.com. That dog cannot be left out in this weather!

  13. yes they are now closed on monday due to buget cuts. just imagine the hell animals will go through fro KCAC is possibly shut down next year.

I can NOT stress enough please get pictures asap.

NO the police department will not do anything you can file a report and see what happens it is worth a shot better than nothing.

Agreed on the blankets, water will just freeze.

I am sending you an email with the contact information of where their animal lives. Please contact this family and let them know how idsturbing this is to treat or mistreat an animal this way. I am sending you their name, address and phone number. If I had a way to contact via email hammerhead I would send her this information as well. This poor dog is crying, barking and howling right now has been out in the cold all day and the lights are on at the back of this house so I would assume someone is home but won't let the dog inside.

    Hammerhead -

I just emailed you via your feralcat website with the contact information so maybe between you, Marianne and myself we can get someone to tell us why they have this dog outside all day everyday without shelter.

I'm in too- let me know if I can help. I can bring a doggie bed over to the dog or something...

    Sigh, I wish dog-napping wasn't illegal.

I haven't heard the dog barking now for 1/2 hour so maybe they finally let him in the house. Maybe they thin it is alright to let this dog outside all the time because he is a large german shephard and not a small lap dog.

Just to let everyone know apparently the dog is inside the home today have not heard any cries or barking. At least for today it will experience so warmth.

It would be nice if such empathy was shown to humans as well as animals. I've met very few people who would go through such lengths for a human as you lot would for an animal! Lucky dog.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  20. it's easier for a displaced human to find shelter (i know there were free beds the first night it dipped below freezing) than for a dog trapped in a backyard...

    that said...

most of us who care that much about animals also care that much about humans...

the current fundraising bumper sticker from hammerhead's feral cat group reads something like this...

end animal and child abuse.. spay and nueter mean and selfish people...

i think that bumper sticker would be an appropriate "note" to leave on windsheilds and on fenceposts and front gates ...

    anyone else game?

  21. cakeiteasy there are alot of homeless people who CHOOSE to be homeless. dog can't choose that, they are forced. I dealt with a homeless about 3 weeks ago. He was fine with it. I even offered blankets he said no. I understand that some may go unnoticed. The shelters are open, there are people going around to people and asking if they would like to come to the shelter they said no.

  22. just found this thread. we have a neighbor who leaves their old yellow lab out front all day long. looks like a new baby is in the house and the dog has been put outside. it's heartbreaking. when you touch him, he's ice cold. his eyes are so sad. please think of all the consequences of owning a pet before you get one. also, just because this thread speaks of pets outdoors does not mean we don't care about people. this was merely meant to draw attention to this subject. this blog is full of people who care more about others than you can imagine!

Has anyone spoken to this neighbor? For chrissakes this is severe weather, what are they thinking? What do you think they would do if someone went to their door and said they noticed the dog outside all day and that he was cold? If they are home all day with a baby, then they are home to let the dog in to warm up.

  24. Thank you, "k" for pointing out that people should "think of the consequences of owning a pet before you get one."

As a rescue/shelter volunteer, it drives me crazy that people don't think far enough ahead to realize that owning a dog is about a 15 year commitment. Think about where you'll be 15 years from now before getting a dog, and think about whether that lifestyle will still be conducive to pet ownership.

And don't even get me started on the "new baby" excuse. Since when have dogs and kids not been able to coexist? Some of my fondest memories as a child were playing with the family dog, and I think helping to care for a pet at such a young age helped shape me into the caring, animal-loving person I am today.

We don't currently have kids, but if/when we do, you'd better believe my kids will be raised to treat every living thing with compassion - not to throw it out in the cold when it's no longer new or convenient.

Glad to hear the dog is not now being left out in the cold. Whatever it takes for these animal owners to change their behavoir-reading about themselves on the blog, a visit from a neighbor or animal control, a note on the door from a person concerned about the animal's welfare or realizing that someone is taking pictures of your frozen animal left without shelter-the important thing is that the animal is helped. This weather is bone chilling and leaving your animal outside is abuse, period.
