Rant: Old pickup truck with dog & 2 kids in back

  1. To the driver of the orange old pick up truck, don't you care about the safety of your children and your dog (pitbull?? not 100% sure)? Having kids (even though they are older, maybe 10) in the back of a pickup truck is not safe and I believe against the law. Maybe you think you're driving safely and maybe you're only going the short distance from AH School to approx. 37th & 100th but someone else may not be looking out for you.

Do us a favor and please be careful with your children and your pets. Thanks.

Bonnie, you are correct. It is illegal for people or pets to ride unsecured in the back of a pickup - not to mention stupid.

I'm sorry, how is a lack of car seat (I assume you mean infant/toddler carseat) or seatbelt an "innocent pleasure"?

I remember riding around in the back of my Grandpa's truck. It was fun.

We didn't have booster seats (WA State law, all kids under 8 must be in one). I remember fighting with my sister over who would get to ride in front (WA State law, all kids under 13 must ride in the backseat unless entirely unpractical). I remember only wearing seatbelts when we were going on the highway.

I remember riding my bike without a helmet. Rollerskating without helmets and kneepads and elbow pads and wrist guards. Climbing trees. Jumping fences. Tying a towel around my neck and trying to fly. Shooting off fireworks in our driveway every Fourth of July.

How in the world did we ever survive?

  11. I saw someone driving yesterday with a kid in the back of their pick-up too, and my daughter was shocked. Now, I grew up back in the days before mandatory seatbelts and helmets and all of the things that we do these days to make our kids safer and, while yes, we survived to adulthood...

I would like to say that not everyone that we were children with did survive. There were deaths and life-changing head injuries. So, though riding in the back of a pick-up is fun, it inherently comes with risks that not all of us are willing to take with the lives of our children.

I used to ride around in the back of pickups as a kid, too - but in the country, not on city streets. Also suffered a severe head injury as a four year old when I fell out of a moving vehicle onto the asphalt (not in the country) because the door wasn't locked. Surviving to adulthood = idyllic childhood - quite a stretch.

  14. According to WSP, when I called about this same scenario... If every seat belt in the cab is in use its perfectly legal.

I googled it, and apparently MrJt is somewhat correct. Someone had asked the Seattle Post-Intelligencer that question not long ago. It is as MrJT says, except the P-I quoted the WSP that if the people riding in the back were under 16 years of age they had to be restrained.

I guess, think farm workers in Eastern Washington...

no, GH, if they're under 16, you have to use ratchet tie-downs and properly secure them to the headache rack or bed cleats - or be cited for having an unsecured load.

  19. I remember in the late '70's, when I was in my late teens, I made the comment wondering if any of the auto makers would ever put out a compact car along the lines of the El Camino, or Ranchero.

The guy (around my age) that I made the comment to, said "Naaaaawww!" And made it sound like it was a ridiculous question.

What seemed like a relatively short time after that, the Subaru Brat was introduced!

It might have been me you saw and I say this: if you want to be a nanny do it for your own family not the whole world. The whole world can live without you acting as their nanny. How did kids who never leave their nanny's reach grow up?

  21. as much as we hate it, there is no WA State law that says that you can't have your kids ride in a pickup bed. Obviously, it's not safe, but since this state doesn't address the issue, idiots will do what they will do. Hit a bump, throw that child out into oncoming traffic, and it won't matter if you have a nanny or not, to be blunt. As parents, we're supposed to keep our children safe, and teach them right from wrong. Curtissimo, if that WAS you, you're doing a heck of a job!

all i'm saying, curtissimo, is that you gotta tie your kids down.

if they fly out on the road and cause a wreck, the fine is, like, $1000.
