   From a little searching, I see that it's nothing new in West Seattle. The Friday before last, I put in my Netflix and tipped up the mailbox flag. Within a few minutes, I heard my mailbox opening and closing very loudly from inside my house, but I was doing something at the time. I figured it was the mail carrier.

   When I heard the mailbox open again about half an hour later, I stopped what I was doing and checked, to see that the mail had arrived. What?

   A week later, Netflix hadn't received the DVD. Definitely mailbox theft. I'll be walking down to the post office from now on. :( Grr.

   To whom? What is there to report to police? I didn't see anyone.

   I did report it to Netflix, but the most applicable option wasn't entirely true... that I mailed it but they never got it. I did try to mail it, but it was not actually mailed. :-/ But I don't think this is what you're talking about.

   It's always a good idea to put outgoing mail in a secure box only. Also, particularly this time of year although it is true all year long, have packages sent to your work if you aren't home during the day.

   I never put our mail in our mailbox. I always drive it to the post office. It is a pain, I know. We have never had anything stolen but I don't want to take the chance.

   It's unfortunate that all (or most) neighborhood mailboxes have been removed. There's no safe way to post outgoing mail any more, as a mailbox with the flag up is an announcement to thieves. Not everyone can drive to a post office whenever they need to mail something, and it's not a very environmentally sound practice, either. The only solution I've found is that some of the neighborhood multiple mailbox installations contain a slot for outgoing mail.

   Mail theft should still be reported to police and the Post Office, witnessed or not. If police know a time and area where thefts are taking place, they might be able to catch the scumbags in the act. And sometimes police need to see a pattern in an area to justify extra patrols, which won't happen if the crimes are not reported.

   That sucks. Sorry that happened to you. Years ago we had some Netflix DVD's disappear through my husband's inter office mail thinking that was safe. Nope. I only mail stuff at the post office now. It is really the only way to make sure it at least starts in the right place. Very frustrating. At least the drive through mailbox at the post office is pretty quick.
