Rant: Drivers who misuse handicapped parking spots

  1. As long as we're bitching about WS drivers: Handicapped parking spots are not a standing zone or pickup zone. They are not a "I'm just running in for a second" spot. This goes for the painted grid spot that is right next to many handicapped spots - that is not a parking spot, even if you have a handicapped permit (yes, I've witnessed this) - this space is for the person legally parked in the handicapped spot to have extra room.

I see this all over West Seattle, but the biggest offenders are people at the 7-11s on Avalon and California/Erskine. People must be imagining the "I'm just using Redbox and will move in a second" sign. Please have some respect for the handicapped parking spots and the people who have been issued passes to use them.

and that goes for the jerks who think using someone else's handicapped placard when they aren't in the car is acceptable too

Thank you! This is so rude to me. I don't know why it would kill a person who does not have the handicap parking allowance (sorry if I'm not putting this in a good way) to walk extra yards. Seriously!

It's the same mindset of people who cruise the parking lots for spots up close when they could just park and walk and be in the store/post office/etc. already.

What about drivers who think everyone around them are mind readers and don't use a turn signal.

I do agree with you, I will say that the 7-11 on California/Erskine has horribly painted spaces. I drive right past it (I live real close) and I have stopped there and its difficult to make out which space is handicapped.

I see it at safeway more often than anyplace else. I avoid parking near those spaces. I have seen some of the people who park in those handicap lanes.

I witnessed one woman a week ago swing her door open so hard it creamed a nice Mercedes parked in the next space over. Then she just let it run against the paint while she loaded her groceries. Looking at the car parking in the space it was obvious that they don't care about what their car looks like so I guess that gave them the right to mis-treat other peoples property.

I told the woman I was writting her plate number down and leaving a note on the car with my contact information and she just got in her car and drove away. I never heard from the guy.
