Ok, I have to rant now. I know your dogs were cold, but really folks, as I was walking up to PCC today to do some shopping, I had to pay extra attention to the sidewalk. In the slush, on more than one place (on 40th and Hines, on the 3400 block of 41st and a couple of other places) there were piles of poop right on the sidewalk!!!!! You couldn't clean up after your dogs for what reason? Yellow snow I can deal with, but nasty brown snow..yuck!!! This is really going to be extra gross with the rain.

Poop Soup!
It is wretched. I'm dreading having to clean up the backyard, but it's got to be done. Tomorrow.
Posted 3 years ago # -
It's smeared all over the sidewalk down here. Ooooweee. Who would let their dog poop and leave it, knowing you might ruin someone else's day.
Posted 3 years ago # -
What is that avatar, Magpie? It is cracking me up. Baby Bush?
Posted 3 years ago # -
only stoopid brain cells survive the freezing temps and the snow...what thoughtless people !!!
Posted 3 years ago # -
I was wondering if it was just more obvious because of the snow. But I'm totally with you. I've seen dog crap absolutely everywhere. It's mostly right in the middle of the sidewalks. Cold and snow aside I really cannot believe these selfish, irresponsible people who think this is OK.

I let this go in my own back yard and I'M regretting it. Here's a thought for those of you who knew damn well you weren't going to pick it up in the first place (not that I blame you): let your dog crap on your OWN lawn BEFORE walking it - is that so bloody difficult?!!! Then it's just nasty and YOUR problem, not nasty and everyone ELSE'S problem.

I walked from Alki to the West Seattle Library yesterday. There was dog poop along the entire route. This disgusts me. Then when I got back home, there was a fresh pile on the sidewalk in front of my house. *FUMING*
I'm a dog owner who cleans up after my pet. When it was snowing it was more difficult to scoop, but not impossible. Come on fellow dog owners: always scoop please.
Posted 3 years ago # -
On my many pet sitting walks over the last week or so, I found it actually easier to pick up the poop in the snow because it would rest on top and I could just get a big handful of snow around it and bag it. What moron couldn't handle that?
I don't know about picking up my backyard today - it's definitely poop soup out there. It will be a futile smear campaign.
Posted 3 years ago # -
it's no more difficult to carry bags and pick up poop when it's snowy out than when it's raining...
it's good to know West Seattle is full of so many pets.. but it would be better not to have to step in the evidence.

On a short (1 mile) walk with my dog today, I came across 7 different piles of dog turds, 6 of which were on sidewalks! The majority of those had been stepped on by unsuspecting souls.
That, coupled with the mounds of trash on every corner picked through by 'coons, gives the neighborhood a decidedly tacky feel.

It seems to be a case of "spontaneous deposition" -- dog feces that appear by magic. I walked to the farmers market and encountered many piles of poop on the sidewalk. I guess if your pouch poops under the cover of snow, you don't have to clean it up. I cleaned up the nearest pile in my neighbors driveway because I knew someone would track it about, and likely me.

We were walking on Alki today with our dog and noticed piles of poop everywhere, including the sidewalk. Unlucky me, as I went to step over a pile I didn't see another one and there went my shoes. As my husband said it was easier picking up after our dog in the snow as it made it easier to pick up. I mean seriously, is it too difficult to pick up after your dog? Blech!

Come walk on 64th--blissfully unpooped. The point looks good too.

i am not going to touch this one with a ten foot pooper scooper...
you really need to get out more ;->
coffee one of these days soon?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Seriously...scooping in the snow was SO much easier than dirt or grass - there is no excuse.
And we just picked up the whole backyard after 2 weeks. Oh my god. My husband and I joked that the new Will Smith movie must be based on our dog's poop (aka "7 pounds")...LOL

Angelcrest,
That was my special Christmas Avatar. I will have to change it after January 20th. It is Bush in a manger with "O come let us abhor him" It was a Christmas card I received from a friend last year and I had to save it. Also, glad I wasn't the only one experiencing lack of scooping, but sad that it also became poopalypse 2008 in West Seattle.Posted 3 years ago # -
I have a neat trick that I use to remove all these dog feces. I carry a bag of bird seed with me and simply sprinkle each poop with some seed. By the time I walk back the next day most of the pile is gone. I think the birds or squirrels take care of it. Not sure.
Posted 3 years ago # -
I picked up about 25 lbs of poop. i couldn't pick it up before the snow.
as for you jschu that is gross and not good for the bird or squirrels. Just like uncooked rice isn't good them either. Pick it up and it's the responsible thing to do. Oops sorry i guess if it in your yard, you can do that. oh well, i guess when the bird takes a dump on your car.... Karma sucks huh?

seed on the poop. I thought at first it was gross but the dog food I use is organic, so I felt it was "OK" for other lesser beings to eat. they really can't tell. BTW- I walk my dog but do sprinkle all poops that rude people leave. Hope this helps

There is an awful lot more dog poop than usual in Highland Park and Riverview Playfield, too. Yesterday we did find one deposit that someone had bagged--and then left on a concrete slab near the Pee Wee ballpark. WTF? There's a trash can not a hundred yards away, for Christ's sake.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Jschu, there are really good reasons not to sprinkle dog poop with seeds to attract other animals to eat it. Animals that eat poop are not the same as animals that eat seeds. Even scavenger birds don't eat poop--heck, if they did, the crows and gulls around here would make short work of all the little gifts that lazy dog owners leave us without you adding a garnish! By enticing animals who are not designed to eat poop to do so, you are encouraging the spread of any kinds of bacteria or pathogens in the poop you sprinkle. Your dog may appear in perfect health and you may feed it very high-quality food, but that doesn't mean it is healthy for other critters to eat its droppings. At best, the seedy poop is a great food source for rats, and goodness knows we have enough of them around without encouraging them further.

Heronegrrrl-
Thanks for feedback. I have a 50 Lb bag of seed I'll need to go through and then I'll stop spreading the seeds on dog poops. Ok- You may have changed my mind. I'll think about it. I usually walk on Alki and Lincoln park. It's there I can do the most good. Question-- waht about switching to grass seed or pant seed like wildflowers. You think it would be better? As the poop/seed is eaten - it can be re-seeded on the park and help with grass anb plant growth. Anyone think this is better? jschu

Jschu - you know what really takes care of the dog poop? Slugs!!! They love it - so every time you find a slug throw it out towards a pile of poop and it will gobble it down:) Just don't add salt - lol!
Posted 3 years ago # -
Slugs? Really. Thank you I have tons of those and I could never find a good use. This Blog has great folks on it. I can easy collect slugs- how about snails? they seem to be around. Let me know- thx!
Posted 3 years ago # -
irukandji..
either :)))))
i will save up all my ice cream treat points for you.

hammerhead...
yes.. payback sucks:)
jschu...
i would be more than happy to allow you to supplement your slug population with those living in my yard.
we must have lazy slugs tho because hubby just keeps picking up dog poo:(
Posted 3 years ago # -
If snails eat dog poo, then escargot is off of my food list. The amount of dog poo eaten by slugs is negligible. I wish that were so with the calla lillies and the dahlias.

flowerpetal...
me too...
we must have slugs with good taste:)

jschu, I'm afraid I'm a bit of an ecological purist when it comes to things like this. I see two issues here. One is that seed eaters are not poop eaters and it can be very unhealthy for critters who eat seeds to get a dose of poop with them. Warm blooded animals can pass parasites, bacteria and viruses back and forth through feces, and wild animals don't get vaccinated for the same things your dog might. Raccoons and harbor seals can get distemper (and parvo too, I think?), for example. The other issue is that grass and wildflower seeds may not be desirable for our local ecology. Wildflower seed mixes frequently contain invasive species seeds. Even if you were to purchase native plant seeds, which would be pretty expensive to get in large quantities, spreading them around wouldn't resolve issue #1.
I hadn't heard about slugs eating poo. Interesting. But again I would venture to say that if slugs or snails (most of which who live in the city are also invasive species, incidentally) really love to eat it that much we wouldn't need to scoop poop because they would take care of it.
The only critters I know for sure who love to eat poo are the larvae of certain fly species, aka maggots. Which in my humble opinion aren't even as appealing as slugs. :P

All I know is that on several occasions at night I have gone out in my backyard and seen slugfests on top of piles of poo and that pile is gone the next morning. So they may not eat a ton of it, but they seem to like it:)
Maybe I should start a new company.......Slugs for Pugs or something like that? Poo Goo?
Posted 3 years ago # -
maybe they like what you feed your dogs?
Posted 3 years ago # -
Solid Gold baby - only the best! (And a little cheese thrown on top)
Posted 3 years ago # -
do you think there is any fermentation going in the digestive process? i know slugs love beer:)))
i used solid gold in minnesota.. i think.. then i discovered the holistic Bench & Field at Trader Joes ... 6.6 lb for under $10... and i am hooked.
i shouldn't be sharing this info though since i buy at least two bags when they have it since they have difficulty keeping it in stock...
and i give my kids cheese too...
we are such suckers!

I love how it's either food or poop that really gets us WS folks really going. Yep. Lotso poop at this end too, ha, no pun intended. Any way. I totally noticed all the poo during the snow. UCK! Glad some one else noticed it too!
