  2. I hate it. I've just about filled up a recycle bag because of it. I don't read them, and, frankly, with our economy right now, there must be something better for them to spend money on. Or not spend it at all. Might make it easier for those with lesser amounts but good ideas to run..

They are supporting the printing and mailing industry.......as well as the recycling businesses in the area. Thanks politicians!

Not that this really changes the situation -- but for some reason the print houses charge much less for the glossy printed postcards than the uncoated or recycled stock -- as much as 75% less. So while it looks like they are spending a lot for the glossy mailers -- they are actually choosing the ones that cost the least.

Costs all depend on where there getting them printed at.....same for mailing services. Too bad most don't choose to print locally or on recycled stocks (which I encourage at my place of business) since the costs are very similar (sometimes less). It is easy to make choices when doing business which helps the local economy as well as the environment. People and Politicians just have to be aware and conscientious about it.

  7. I'm with you, ace. The nominal purpose of these mailers is to make us smarter, but with each one I read I can actually feel myself getting DUMBER. (And that's saying something!)

I'd love it if the politicians and initiative pro/con folks all got together and made an agreement to send just ONE mailer per candidate/initiative per campaign. That, in combination with the stuff in the voters guide, should give us voters enough info to go on.

Failing that, I would support a "do not mail" option for this crap. Just like we've got for the Yellow Pages.

  8. The thing that gets me is the candidates that are sending these post cards to us down in SAN FRANCISCO based on our change of address form sent to the Post Office... uhmmmmm duh - as much as I miss West Seattle, I'm not voting for you down here!

    not even by absentee ballot?
surely you aren't invested enough in your local politics yet to care whether you vote there :0

    just kidding...

rockergirl5678: by that logic, we should be using plastic bags because they support the plastic bag business? Just because something supports a business, doesn't make it the right thing to do....(and I am a small business owner myself)

DBP - Usually, these pieces of cardboard go directly from the mailbox to the garbage can without any intervening stops. Today I actually read two in the mail: YES on 1183 and NO on 1183. I studied them completely. I didn't learn anything new! It never occurred to me actually they were meant to be read. :-) I think the pols just do it because everyone else is, and they think they'll lose the election unless they do what everyone else is doing. Likewise the road signs - I can somewhat see the point with those.

Supporting small business doesn't make sense to you as a small business owner? Hmmmm......what business or industry are you in?
I do use plastic bags; over and over again though, once I get them. So I guess I am supporting that industry somewhat. Not sure how many small "plastic" manufacturers there are locally though, most are large corporations I imagine.
Recycle, reuse, repurpose as much as I can.
Not saying you have to read them or make sense of them, although that would be a good thing, just that by "eliminating" or printing & sending out less (or none)of them takes away jobs and employment opportunities in an already struggling industry.
