Is it really that hard to drive in the rain? I don't get it; it rains here a lot,we should be used to it by now. Sadly we are a city of incompetent drivers.

Rainy day drivers rant

I thought these exact words while driving to work this morning. I've been in cities where people drive better on snow and ice covered roads than we do in rain.

Just can't think of any logical answer. I didn't hear about any accidents on the bridge, 1st ave. or I-5. Did thousands of w seattleites decide to drive today becasue they didn't want to wait for the bus in the rain. I drove in around 9 and things are usually pretty clear by then. Admittedly, I was part of the problem.

I agree, it was absolutely ridiculous! I work on the east side and normally can get to work in under 40 minutes. Today it took an hour and 50 minutes, and over an hour of that was on the West Seattle bridge! I haven't seen it this bad in ages. :(

I agree the bridge was in bad shape yesterday. I suspect it had a lot to do with a semi that tipped one of its trailers over on NB I-5 just north of Mercer St. I-5 was backed up which backed up the bridge...

Hoffanimal, I've been feeling your pain for about 15 years.

Something happened on the bridge this morning... Firetrucks and police cruisers had blocked off two lanes when I drove by. I did notice a white scooter off to the side of the bridge, but no civilians. Any idea what happened?

BTW, I totally agree about the rain and what it seems to do to drivers here. That said, I used to live in Arizona - and when there's a light drizzle people either grind to a halt or swerve all over the road!

I'm wondering the same thing Beaglenut...I didn't see the scooter driver either. Sadly, made me think someone jumped off the bridge, but I figured there would be a story about it on the blog by now. Hope that's not the case but it sure seemed weird.

Beaglenut, I wondered the same thing and sent a tip to WSB about it. I'm definitely worried. That looked like a Honda Metropolitan scooter, which is only 50cc and absolutely not safe or legal for the high bridge. I'm quite worried about the rider. I'm afraid s/he jumped, but definitely hope that is not the case.

Odd to me too, a brief case was still hanging from a handle bar. I drove by just as the 2nd fire unit was arriving and blocking lanes. I'm really hoping the scooter rider was sitting in the passenger seat of the 1st unit staying dry!

In case anyone missed the latest blog update:
We’re continuing to receive questions about this, so just in case you were wondering too: We’ve just received new information from police regarding the incident that backed up traffic on the eastbound bridge around 7:30 am; some who e-mailed us reported seeing a “scooter” at the scene. Police had trouble finding information during our first call but Seattle Police Media Unit Officer Renee Witt has since located a report that says a “man driving a moped” was hurt in a possible hit-run crash. No word yet on his condition (we have a message out to the Fire Department, which would know if the injuries were life-threatening) or whether the other driver was found.

I think everything is ok - I drove past this morning before any police/fire truck response, and there was a man standing next to the scooter, with another lady standing with him. There was a car pulled to the side, both in the front and behind the scooter. I am not sure if they were involved in any accident or if they just stopped to lend a hand. The car behind the scooter had someone sitting in it, and the car in the front was vacant, so I think it belonged to the lady standing with the scooter guy. He was rubbing his wrist, but otherwise seemed to be fine just from my quick glance.
