   But then, what did you expect?

   These shots are of the Barton p-patch in progress as of less than an hour ago. The sod has been scraped off (yawn!!!) where the pathways separating the beds will be.

   

   The longest path running diagonally down the center will be ADA accessible.

   The bulldozers made a ring around Big Bircha. She looks naked now (Huh!?) except for a skimpy grass skirt the dozers left around her waist. (Oh.)

   

   You can still ogle her shimmying in the breeze, but you're not allowed to touch or even get within four feet of her, or you'll be in violation of Seattle's decency statutes.

   

   I Photoshopped and Photoshopped, but it didn't make any difference. Really sorry about this, y'all. I just don't know what else to say.

   If the remaining grass seen in the photos is where the P-patch planting beds will be, there will be extensive damage to the root system of the tree. Many people believe - erroneously - that tree roots only extend to the drip line. Not so. In addition, the compaction of soil in the root zone is as damaging as the actual destruction of the roots through digging. If the so-called "safety" perimeter is only 4 feet, it was set by some moron who knows nothing about trees. This so-called "protection" is completely meaningless.

   OK, let's call it an eight-foot protection zone. I'm terrible with eyeball guesstimates.

   As we know, some people didn't want to keep the tree in the first place, because they felt it would shade too much of the arable space. So the pro- and anti-tree factions got together and worked out a compromise, which was to keep a grass perimeter around the tree. If the tree still perishes from root compaction, etc. the pro-tree folks will have the satisfaction of having tried.

   And the anti-tree folks? They'll be exuding tea and sympathy.

   The PPatch folks worked really hard all weekend to do some work there. Maybe DP is involved with them, I don't know. I monitor their FB group and saw the calls to action, and drove by on Sat. inbetween two assignments and it was busy as a hive. Those folks are MAKING IT HAPPEN. It's quite amazing to watch :)

   @anonyme How does having a garden cause soil compaction? Unless the roots of this particular kind of tree are extremely close to the surface (which I would assume that they are mostly deeper than than what would be disturbed by a gardener) they are not using heavy equipment to build the garden that I can tell. The sod was removed with a sod cutter that is no bigger than most lawnmowers. I would be surprised if the way that this space is being planned and how it will be used would cause harm to the tree.
