Puget Sound Jellyfish Explosion?

  1. Since 1991 (when I first started playing on the waters of Puget Sound) I have NOT seen so many jellyfish off of West Seattle.

Yesterday, out windsurfing -- dozens of medium size (one foot diameter) Lion's Mane, many clunking into the fin on my sailboard (clunk!) and probably hundreds of smaller white (Moon?) jelly fish. One huge, I mean huge Lion's Mane 3 feet in diameter with trailing tentacles 6 feet long. Amazing. Ten feet off shore at Lowman Beach Park, not low tide.

Anyone know what is going on? Is this unusual or have I just missed this somehow in the past?

Pretty normal for this time of year. I'm out on a boat two days a week for work, and haven't noticed more than usual this year. It is impressive how large they can get and how many can be out there!

Before clicking the link, I thought maybe there'd been an actual explosion, ala *KA-BOOM!*. Makes me think of this...

  4. Maybe they heard about the Ducky Reserve and are trying to locate it?

  6. herongrrrl: Thanks. I thought maybe I was not the best at knowing how populated the sound gets with jellyfish this time of year. However, I really don't remember any summer like this before. Maybe it is because of significant north winds these last two days. Usually there isn't that much significant north wind in July. At any rate, again, today, tons of jellyfish everywhere.... actually unavoidable.
