Ryan BMemberThis morning on my way to work I round the corner by the lookout on SW Admiral Way where the sign that tells your speed and see the officer who drives the unmarked Blue Dodge Magnum standing in the road telling cars to pull off to the shoulder to receive their ticket. This morning he had 4 cars pulled over. I hope any and all of you who have received one of these tickets does not pay them and fights these. An officer can not stand and watch a sign give him your speed. These signs are not properly calibrated to accurately portray your speed. These signs also can’t tell the officer which lane the vehicle is traveling in if more than 2 cars are approaching the sign. I have personally driven past this sign at exactly 30MPH in the Right hand lane and had a vehicle behind me in the left hand land, and the sign read more than my speedo said. I will be writing the city of Seattle Police department on this issue as well.

MSWSMemberThe officer has a radar/laser gun he looks through to get the speeders. I see him out there regularly. I have noticed the sign is 3 mph difference than my speedometer.

Ryan BMemberNot yesterday. He was looking up at the sign and walking out into the road.

kootchmanMemberBetter technology is coming…. MUCH better. Radar and laser hits will now be sent via the GPS network as a data up link….. you will be notified of stop sign cameras, and operative radar and laser on your navigation device by GPS along your route of travel… ain’t technology wonderful? Plus… your actual speed will be logged and can be recalled should you have to get caught. Accurate to 1-2 mph… better than the radar gun!!

AdmiralJanewayParticipantAn officer is out today looking for speeders.

JanSParticipantso…the remedy…don’t speed. See how simple that is?
November 12, 2012 at 9:53 pm #776927
Ryan BMemberAdmiralJaneway – thanks for your update.
JanS – It is a simple remedy but how easy is it to go 30mph up that hill?
Update from the SPD. I talked to Saregent Nathan Upton from SPD. His response to my questions were that these signs are indeed not calibrated to give an accurate speed thus not being able to be used to write you a ticket. His smart response was that they can use “pacing” and “aggressive driving” to pull you over and cite you. He told me that the officers can see you driving and can tell if you are eating, drinking, talking on a phone, etc.
For any and all SPD and or anyone who can help with this, let’s get this “aggressive driving” task force down to Alki Ave. I live on this street and am guilty of speeding on this road. This street is utilized by many for a drag racing venue. It gets darker much earlier this time of year and bad streetlight locations coupled with faint road markings make it difficult to see pedestrians crossing the many sidewalks.

SmytheMemberIf you are unable to drive the speed limit or see pedestrians in crosswalks you should not be using a motor vehicle. Period.

Genesee HillParticipantRyan B:
It is darn easy to go 30 MPH up that hill, or down that hill. Unless, of course, your car does not come equipped with a gas pedal or brakes. Or as Smythe implies, a motor vehicle operator possessing basic driving skills.
November 12, 2012 at 11:42 pm #776930
JKBParticipantDownhill it’s difficult to go exactly 30mph. The hill is steep enough that you either ride your brakes continuously or else alternate between braking and coasting.
And either uphill or downhill, a steady 30mph presents a safety issue because it’s so different from the prevailing flow. Causes people to swerve and pass, not to mention honking and flashing lights and making gestures.

manhattan93Memberwait…we can’t eat while driving ? I frequently ate my breakfast bar in the car .
November 13, 2012 at 12:51 am #776932
hooper1961Memberremember this section of street was posted at 35 MPH for years AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT HISTORY. In fact since the City arbitrarily lowered the limit to 30 MPH the the accident rate has gone up! In other words the street is less safe now than when it was properly posted at 35 MPH.
November 13, 2012 at 1:03 am #776933
Genesee HillParticipantYeah, JKB, go as fast, or slow, as your heart desires. I recommend 85 MPH. Just don’t whine on this blog after gettin’ led away in ‘cuffs, please. Thanks, in advance.
November 13, 2012 at 2:24 am #776934
JKBParticipantThanks, Genesee. Was running low on attitude.
So everything I said is observed fact. Never said a word about what speed I drive myself.
On the other hand, your recommendation of 85mph might make you responsible if somebody does it. Careful what you say…

Ryan BMember@Smythe and Genesee Hill
I am really sorry that both of you live such sheltered lives. I can drive the speed limit but sometimes you don’t realize how fast you are going especially after you just got off the freeway where you were going double the speed. I really am upset that you want to see a fellow neighbor get led off in handcuffs.
and again Genesse hill as you said about basic driving skills. When I drive around West Seattle and Alki, I see more than 50% of the vehicles with some kind of damage due to hitting or getting hit by something. So maybe more people than myself apparently lack “basic” driving skills.
This thread has gotten so derailed from my original post. I was simply just trying to warn fellow neighbors to watch out for this officer whether you are purposely speeding or not so your pocketbook and insurance arent taking a hit.

Ryan BMemberI really admire how you can poke fun at someone you don’t know through your keyboard and put them down. Why do you say you assume I have loved ones?
November 13, 2012 at 3:05 am #776937
Ryan BMemberIt doesnt make it ok for you to put down others because you are bitter and old and hide behind a keyboard. You don’t know me and who my family is. For as much as you know one day you might need my help never knowing that the person saving your life just might be the same person you talked crap to on the internet. But you are perfect and have never made a mistake.

November 14, 2012 at 3:16 am #776944
Genesee HillParticipantRyan B:
If the street was in front of your residence, would you be happy, or sad, if the police were nailing speeders?
“Golly, officer, I had trouble slowing down from the 45 MPH speed limit on the West Seattle High Bridge”.
Honest to gawd. I get ticked when people whine about getting nailed for traffic infractions. They are usually the first to complain when things are amiss in their neck of the ‘hood.
November 14, 2012 at 4:05 am #776945
JKBParticipantJust to add a detail, Admiral Way between the viewpoint and the bridge is in front of almost no residences.
Uphill there are a few as you get to the very top. Downhill there aren’t even any intersections, as the road runs along the side of that steep hill.
We’re mixing up a couple of questions here: what should the speed limit be, and what do we think of people who drive at higher speeds than the current posted 30mph limit. They’re almost independent questions.
Oh, and there’s no question of having trouble slowing down coming off the bridge. It’s so steeply uphill that just coasting takes you down to 30 right away.
