Police by the library on Delridge?

  1. We just got home (live a couple blocks north of the library) and there seem to be tons of cop cars and a helicopter flying around. Anyone have any idea what's going on? Thanks!

-Helicopter performing wide circles near our house on 23rd. No idea what the deal is.

-fwiw It has been a very eerie kind of day. I observed all kinds of bizarre behavior everywhere I went.

We live further north, 4700 block of 26th. I just went outside and talked to a police officer driving down the street. He said that there was just an armed robbery at a liquor store down the road (White Center?) and the suspects had fled north. He said that they were looking up here "because of travel time" or something like that.

  4. Thanks, Carissa. SPD does not have anything on its media-alert line, unlike last night, when they had info about the robbery and robbery attempt pretty quick.

This unfortunately happened while we were away from the keyboard covering tonight's big game and nobody called us. Until this crazy week (and Mike's right, it's been eerie/bizarre, if you review the news page for the past two days, there's been lots of weirdness, after a relatively quiet period), we didn't have much breaking news for a time, so we haven't had to issue this reminder lately, but we answer the phone 24/7 and it is with us EVERYWHERE - if you see something weird and you don't see a story pop up here fairly quickly, 206-293-6302 - it is always easier for us to find out what's up when it's happening, than later - this week for example, one of my key overnight contacts is off, so it's harder to get after-the-fact info fast.

If we don't find out anything tonight, we'll be trying the weekend SPD media contacts tomorrow and will post an update. But if it really was White Center, it's KCSO, and that's a whole different set of contacts. I'm looking around in some of the unofficial channels to see if the real story turns up somewhere.

  5. I live on 25th Ave SW, between Brandon and Findlay and heard the helicopters and got a call from a neighbor that police were in the alleyway between 25th and Delridge. Loud and freaky, and I agree, Mike D., that it has been an odd day energy wise. Another neighbor was in an accident earlier this evening and the name she was given didn't match the plates and the police couldn't find record of the person. Was driving a grey car, plates 575THC. Eyes and ears open.

Wow, westseattleblog performs a wonderful service in keeping the community updated on local crime. Thanks so much!

  8. We never found out for sure what was going on. The whole liquor store in WC seems a little odd, unless they were on a manhunt for the robbers who maybe jumped out of a car. It would have been nice to find out some details and if there were armed folk running around the streets or if they had been caught.

  9. Sgt. Urquhart with KCSO says there were no such robberies in their jurisdiction (White Center and beyond) Friday night.

According to his log, around 9:34 pm Friday, Guardian One - the KC law enforcement chopper, which SPD also uses since it has no chopper of its own - started assisting SPD with a call that he says originated in the 5100 block of SOUTH Myrtle - not SW - which means not WS, so it makes no sense.

SPD Media and SW Precinct have both been checking for me and they can't nail it down either, unless, one speculated, it was the arrests of the would-be carjackers from four hours earlier in south Delridge - although they were arrested fairly close to where the crime happened, and the narrative does not suggest a lag.

Very unusual for info-seeking to be this difficult. As I just mentioned on the North Delridge list, we and some of our fellow neighborhood-news publishers in the city have been pushing for real-time access to police information (two of us brought it up again Thursday in an informal meeting with three city councilmembers) - not just for our reporting purposes but also something more like the online 911 log open to all which shows everywhere the Fire Department goes, with obvious omissions of sensitive operations.

Don't know what will be possible but it just seems SILLY that if you have a chopper overhead and police running around in your neighborhood, you can't easily find out at least a few basic facts about what they're doing.

  10. agreed, thanks for trying to follow up, definitely appreciated. It's just frustrating to not know what is going on in our own neighborhood, especially when it was on what seemed to be a large scale.

    Yes, thank you.

It was a very strange night like martial law had been declared. I have never seen so many police out which makes it all the stranger that no information is available.

I was out walking my dog when this all happened.

Many neighbors were out trying to figure out what was going on.

The police seemed to want to keep it secret which just made it scarier.
