I have a dog that needs water therapy and was told by a few people at the WSSF that there is a place local but can not remember the name of it for the life of me. Can anyone help me out?
Also, is there a park that it is legal for dogs to swim (on or off leash) close to or in West Seattle?

i did the search for my dog when she had knee surgery..
The closest place for dogs to swim is Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island. Its a small park, but a just a small skip over the bridge and right off I-90. The next is Warren Magnuson Park. Don't try it at Lincoln, its $500 and they do police it.

I take mine to Magnusson. Takes about 20 minutes to get there but it's a nice park (and big).
She loves it there.

I have many, many clients who take their dogs there for hydrotherapy. They have helped many old and paralyzed dogs walk again:-)

generally not deep enough.. or warm enough unless you use a solar blanket and the sun cooperates.
Two great off leash dog parks with swimming holes.. not close though. Sand Point/Magnuson Park Off Leash Area has a lake access area for dogs and the Off Leash area at Marymoor Park has about 5 great river access points where dogs can swim.

Far, but Edmonds is my fav. dog park of all time. On the beach. Lots of fun driftwood and I have yet to meet a jerk at that dog park.

we've been going to mercer island with the dogs once or twice a week since summer started. they love it. also, if you walk past the main portion of the dog park and use the far entrance, you can access a smaller, more private swimming area for your dogs-- we've taken ours there a couple times because ours are really big and have a tendency to steal other dogs' toys, sigh...
We went to Luther Burbank on Tuesday and Thursday (should have done more research on the I90 closing though) and love the park. The weather was warm enough, I even got in with the dogs. Fun!
I know it's almost a year late, but I wanted to let you know that Wellsprings K9 (http://wellspringsk9.com) is a great place to swim your dog especially post surgery as we also provide massage therapy. Also, just to clarify previous messages, we ARE located in West Seattle.

my awesome vet in ballard also does water therapy for dogs. the vets and vet techs there are unbelievably nice and helpful. you can watch from the waiting area! cool stuff.

Probably "beating a dead horse" with this question...but why can a dog swim at Alki...but not in Lincoln Park?
Last summer...I got a warning for my dog down at LP beach...I actually laughed at the person who was so passionate about enforcement and was going to write me a $500 ticket - which I would have ripped up right there...the thought that a dog (mind you one born for the water) couldn't go swimming at a beach I grew up at and took my dogs to...
I seems more than a little odd, snobbish, wrong, ridiculous...and dumbfounding...
What is the real threat of a dog swimming in one area but not another just 1.5 miles away in the same waters?
I don't have the time to look up the code...but even if I did...it would still be dumb.

The person that wrote us a ticket at LP said it was a matter of feces and shellfish. The person who wrote us a ticket at the beach near Forks, WA said that a federal arrest warrant would be issued if the fine weren't paid. He went on to say that if your dog is seen disturbing a marine mammal the fine can be up to ten grand. Does anyone think that dog owners are a little over regulated?

Our dog just had knee surgery yesterday and we are happy to know that Wellspring is close and available for when her vet okays her. We mentioned we had already looked into it and he was very happy. However, she is not so happy but hopefully she will be back to her running, jumping, wrestling self in no time with a little help from Wellspring!
Now back to your regularly scheduled beach/dog argument.
Semele - I hope she's recovering nicely, if you guys need anything we're not too far away. I know one dog that's going to miss her and sends lots of licks (okay, maybe neck gnawing) her way.

Thanks Kimberley! She is the saddest doggie in the world right now. And when we told her no play time with her boy Shankley for a minimum of 2mths she gave us the saddest doggie look ever! Supposedly she should be back to her old self after she recovers!

I've racked my pea-sized brain over this and the only logical reason to make this a violation would relate to the dog being off leash and potentially out of control - a nuisance - potentially a threat to other dogs & the other public using the space.
Understandable to a point...I've seen some interesting dogs (and public) when they get off leash...
That said...the comment about feces & shellfish would've received a good chuckle....

Oh ya...watched 3 awesome labs & their owner having a great time in the water at LP beach yesterday... Those dogs better get a job to pay that ticket...
If other locations in the Puget Sound allow it, then would it seem conceptually prudent to designate a specific area in LP that would be ok? How about the far end near the alley way to Lowman? Is this a Parks Dept. decision or City of Seattle?

I think it's a city decision, 365Stairs. Seattle Municipal Code 18.12.080 mentions beaches (and other water areas). And actually, according to that, you're not supposed to have a dog on a city beach, period, leashed or otherwise.
The reason, as far as I can tell, is indeed fecal contamination; this USA Today article goes into some detail. At least, I'm guessing that's the reason for prohibiting dogs on beaches entirely.

sounddogswims.com is a dogcare service which fights the traffic for dog owners and takes dogs swimming to legal dogparks with water access.
Water therapy is fabulous for recovering pups, but healthy dogs don't need to be so darn restricted in such a "therapeutic" or chlorinated environment. Plus, small group 3-4 dogs) socialization is incorporated into swim romps. The per hourly rates are waaay cheaper than most therapy pools and more effective exercise than dog walkers. $30-35/1.5 hrs, with fairly flexible scheduling.
20 minutes of swim time is aerobic exercise equivalent of 40 minutes of walking. Awesome value all around, IMHO.
