christopherboffoliParticipantI was just delighted to discover this gem on the Pagliacci menu tonight: roasted butternut squash, foraged chanterelle mushrooms, prosciutto crudo, a blend of fontina and mozzarella on an olive oil base finished with crispy fresh sage leaves. Zoinks!
December 7, 2010 at 2:59 am #710271
WesCAddleMemberI trust that prosciutto crudo means bacon.
December 7, 2010 at 3:15 am #710272
Admiral935Participantuh, those are salad ingredients. Just sayin’
December 7, 2010 at 3:25 am #710273
West Seattle Art AttackMemberWell actually the closest Italian thing to bacon would be pancetta. Prosciutto is available in Italy as prosciutto cotto (which is like our boiled ham) and prosciutto crudo which we typically refer to as prosciutto (a thinly sliced, salty, air cured ham). I don’t know about you, Admiral, but I’ve never had squash in a salad (or on a pizza for that matter) and you can’t get much more pizzaish than mushrooms, ham and cheese. . . . .also just saying.

CarsonParticipantAdmiral935,
One of the best Pizza’s I ever had was a Caesar Salad Pizza. Basically a dough, olive oil, light parm cheese and a caesar salad on top!!
December 7, 2010 at 4:08 am #710275
pigeonmomParticipantYum!
December 7, 2010 at 4:24 am #710276
redblackParticipantthat’s awesome, christopher. sub basil for the sage and i’m there. ;)
admiral: are you one of those “fruit doesn’t belong on pizza” folks?
the best pie i’ve ever had is sybil’s breakdown from mad pizza: apple, mandarin, cashews, gorgz, ‘shrooms, and red onion.
December 7, 2010 at 4:58 am #710277
JanSParticipantredblack..that sounds absolutely wonderful!!! <drooling>
December 7, 2010 at 5:31 am #710278
argilesParticipantThat looks amazing minus the mushrooms, no one here would be willing to eat it with me though :(
December 7, 2010 at 5:38 am #710279
addParticipantAt heart, I am an east-coast-purist when it comes to pizza (really should be nothing but cheese on top but if you must, then maybe some sausage) – but that butternut squash concoction sounds AWESOME! I’m a gonna try me some…
December 7, 2010 at 6:00 am #710280
christopherboffoliParticipantI’m as East Coast coal-fired Bleecker Street pizza as they come and I’m here to tell you that this pizza was absolutely fantastic. The sage leaves were gently fried and perfectly mild. Everything about this combo worked.
December 7, 2010 at 6:21 am #710281
jissyParticipantwow – that does sound yummy! Phoenicia has a pizza also with squash on it that is one of my faves… course any pizza at Phoenicia is a fave of mine but might need to try Pagliacci!
December 7, 2010 at 6:56 am #710282
guidosmomMemberDid any of you have a chance to try the squash pizza from Phoenicia? I normally would not want anything sweet on pizza, but their squash pizza converted me. YUM!
December 8, 2010 at 3:11 am #710283
redblackParticipantjan: sybil’s breakdown is no longer on mad pizza’s menu, but they still bake it on request.
if you ever find yourself in madison park, call ahead and take one home. you won’t regret it.
their salads are great, too. and they have beer.
west seattle and mad pizza would both benefit from a wes’ side mad pizza location, and i have been telling their staff so for 5 years. so far to no avail.
December 8, 2010 at 3:13 am #710284
Admiral935ParticipantCarson: uh, okay. Certainly adventuresome! I’ll keep an open mind now.
Redblack: no I’m fine with it if that’s your fancy. More fruit the better in ones diet I believe. But the best pizza I ever had was a “plain slice” 1/2 folded and dripping. Of course, eaten while standing and a little hunched over, and outside. The other best Pizza I’ve had was a PMO pepperoni, mushroom and black olive. I’ve been told anchovies should be put on pizza, so, that has me wondering, and kinda starting to make me hungry!
West Seattle Art Attack: Oh, you simply must try a root vegetable salad some day. And if squash is not a root vegetable (I’m outta my leauge here) then a squash salad prepared like a root veg salad, let’s say roasted, heck, even BBQ’d for a nice roasty caramelization – as an example just halve the squash and Q it up, then cube it and do whatever else-this and that…
christopherboffoli: with respect to your recommendation I’ve tried to get with Pagliacci 3-4 times over the decade, it never went well. But, okay, you’re toppings discovery is solid and I’ll prolly try it. It’d be nice if they had that on a per slice. I’ll check onit this week.
out
December 8, 2010 at 3:32 am #710285
redblackParticipantadmiral: then there’s noble roman’s deep-dish pizza, baked in a square olive-oiled cast-iron baking pan. fully 2 inches thick. loaded with cheese.
(from my previous, midwestern life.)
i’m also fairly shocked to hear that you would ever – ever! – get bad treatment from pagliacci.
every so often they’ll just give – yes, give! – you a free delivery pizza… because you’re a loyal customer. or it’s your birthday. or they haven’t heard from you in a while. or it’s a holiday. or just because.
truly great people.
as a midwesterner (from another life) i don’t like flat crusts so much, but their toppings/combos are pretty damned good, as evinced by christopher’s example.
i’d trust them not to eff it up. :)
December 8, 2010 at 3:57 am #710286
christopherboffoliParticipantAdmiral935: As advertised, I’m a pretty tough pizza customer. But Pagliacci has never disappointed me. In fact, they also scored very high on our judges’ scorecards during the WSB’s pizza taste test back in the fall of ’08: http://bit.ly/dTagpK
December 8, 2010 at 4:34 am #710287
dhgParticipantredblack: I am shocked. I’ve not been given a single extra slice of pepperoni from Pagliacci. i don’t live in their delivery zone and so i’ve always called and picked up. I’ve had their number on speed dial on about 5 generations of cell phones. This last year I’ve nearly stopped pizza consumption but now I’m bummed to think some extra love was given to some customers but never me.
December 8, 2010 at 4:36 am #710288
Admiral935ParticipantI just called Pagliacci, their central delivery number. VERY nice customer service person!, for sure. I was going to order the butter nut squash and a small pep, but the 11″ squash is $17.95 (before the governer takes her slice) so I chickened-out in favor of going downtown (Kaliforny Ave) too see about a single slice of the butter nut. Whatever they have for a slice when I get there, I’ll try it. But doggonit the cheese better be right, oR eLsE!
December 8, 2010 at 5:30 am #710289
JanSParticipantredblack…the Sybil is still listed on the Mad Pizza online menu under veggie selections…
December 8, 2010 at 5:45 am #710290
austinMemberI had to try one, it’s very tasty. The squash and chanterelles really hit the spot.
December 8, 2010 at 7:07 pm #710291
365StairsParticipantPagliacci’s Rocks! There seasonals in December (including the Pear one) are a huge hit for new and veteran customers!
December 9, 2010 at 12:23 am #710292
furryfacesParticipantHey Chris! That pizza looks like it is begging for you to do a ‘little people props’ photo shoot and play on words! Like the ones you donated to Furry Faces Wine Fest & Art Auction.
People loved them!
They were displayed in an awesome location and people were battling on bids until the very end! Thank you for your creativity and generous nature.
December 9, 2010 at 5:10 am #710293
redblackParticipantwow, dhg. the missus and i have received no fewer than 3 free pies from them in the past 12 years for various frivolous reasons.
maybe it’s because i’m sicilian, and i’ve made them offers they can’t refuse.
:D
