Palin is a maverick...and a liar...and a tax cheat...

  1. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081022/ap_on_el_pr/palin_family_travel

"Tony Knowles, a Democratic former governor of Alaska who lost to Palin in a 2006 bid to reclaim the job, said he never charged the state for his three children's commercial flights or claimed their travel as official state business.

Knowles, who was governor from 1994 to 2002, is the only other recent Alaska governor who had school-age children while in office.

"There was no valid reason for the children to be along on state business," said Knowles, a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. "I cannot recall any instance during my eight years as governor where it would have been appropriate to claim they performed state business."

Knowles said he brought his children to one NGA event while in office but didn't charge the state for their trip."

  2. ...and a lavish spender ...
News out that the McCain campaign spent "over $150,000 on clothing and accessories for Palin and her family" in September. So much for relatin' to the workin' class.

I was just thinking about that. The $150,000. Wasn't it republicans who pitched a major fit over Edwards' haircuts? How does this not bother them? I will never understand their definition of fiscal conservatism.

  4. $150,000 and they all still look like they just walked out of Barbizon. Blarg.

  5. well, try to find her designer glasses...I've heard upwards of 400 bucks, but really not sure...supposedly made by Kawasaki. I own one pair of glasses(and I hate them - lol)...who needs a pair for each outfit?

    from dayjobnuker.com :

The Sarah Palin glass frames from Kawasaki are near impossible to find right now and you can’t just walk down to your local eyeglass frame store and get them because they are special designer frames. These aren’t the knock offs, these are the real Kawasaki 704’s. The Sara Palin rimless frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses, the total package can run to $700. But that seems to be a price that people are willing to pay. If McCain / Palin get elected, these Sarah Palin’s eyeglasses will be in style for a long time.

According to USA Today, “Her family helped pick the final style. The frames Palin picked help her look fashion-forward.”

yeah, way to relate to us common folk...

$150,000 in clothing, accessories, make-up and services for a period of TWO MONTHS... Just like the rest of us!

Funny, it seems that every picture I see she's in the red, thick collared, showing a little collar bone but no cleavage suit jacket. I'll have to see if I can tell the difference from one to the next now.

I hear another "shame on the media" acomin'.

    Also.

  7. she collected per diem for living at home and working in Anchorage as well... oh.. and for attending religious conferences...

again, not somrthing the past governors have done.. and maybe not so legal.

i hear there is a recall petition going:)

  9. lrukandji - check this out for a nice view of her various outfits. I had no idea about the short skirts and high-heeled boots! No wonder Pat Buchanan gushes all over her.

add, in one of those slides, SP is wearing a white bracelet that I've seen on her before. It appears to be a "ONE" band - anyone know if any other groups use white bands? If that truly is a ONE Campaign bracelet, I'm having trouble reconciling the two platforms internally. Bono must be oh-so-pleased.

How can she promote the reduction of taxes? Who's gonna pay for her clothes, hotel rooms and travel for her and her family, not to mention everyday living expenses at home? For someone who hates government so much, she's certainly gorging at the public trough.

She's the prototype of what we DON'T want in elected officials: a liar and a cheat.

    Posted 3 years ago #

yes. Some people have to live for two years on what they spent in one afternoon. And some kid could make it through three years in the most expensive Ivy League school on that clothes budget.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  15. The sad part is, I've owned kawasaki glasses for the last 4 years...and now some alaskan has made them all popular....I'll never be able to replace them again....I'll have to find the next best thing then. Maybe some horn rimmed glasses.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  16. so apparently the "offical line" of the RNC is that the clothes will be donated to the needy after the campaign. Because we all know how much the Republicans care about the needy....and how much the needy is in need of a $4000 business suit and high-heeled boots.

75K would support me for 3 years...150K for double that. It's disgraceful, sinful, an I'm sure there must be a quote in the bible somewhere that says that being vain is bad - lol. They ain't none of them who really, really knows about being a common folk, I don't think...well, maybe Obama and Biden ;-)

(ANCHORAGE, Alaska) Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is allowed to charge taxpayers for her children's commercial airline tickets because they represent the state wherever they go with her, the governor's aides said Wednesday.

"There's an expectation that the First Family participates in community activities," said Sharon Leighow, the governor's spokeswoman. "They are representing the First Family and the state of Alaska." - Newsweek

I'm not sure I'll ever understand the way of thinking here. First, Palin is considered a "bad" mother because she has too many children to hold office (an opinion I have read here repeatedly) and then, when she does something completely legal and brings her children with her, she gets bashed again!

Seems she can never win with you folks.

Chris in rare form, when he feels there is a point that needs to be made.

Yeah it was a funny segment, if you watch the full clip, and it gives you an idea of what Wasilla is about from a comedians perspective.

All in all, the whole argument "I learned how to run government from being mayor or Wasilla" is totally overblown.

  28. What it boils down to, NR, if she's going to suck off the public teat, she needs to pay taxes on it just as if it were income. this goes for her per diem so she didn't have to travel all the way to the "big city", and chose to run Alaska from Wasilla, and it applies to the money that the Alaskan taxpayers spent to truck her little snot monkeys around with her all the time on "official state business" - which, might I point out again- the former Gov with children did not do that. Sarah Palin is nothing but a spoiled little beauty queen who gets what she wants regardless of the rules. I hope the IRS is taking notice.

First of all - examples? I've NEVER once seen this voiced here and certainly never in those words. Her actions? Legal - barely. Prudent/inline with Joe the Plumbers/in the best interest of the tax payers - NOOOOOOOOO. *sound the buzzer*

Chris Matthews was good but Olberman making fun of McCain's numerous slips... I couldn't watch. I'm not votin' for him but I hate to see him hung out to dry like that. Let him slip gracefully into senility for God's sake... lol... after the election that is.

It's not about bringing the kids or buying the clothes (putting aside the "I'm a hockey mom like you" claim or that it flies in the face of the middle class)...it's about who's paying for it and what that says about a candidate's expectation of entitlement.

My teen son, who is age-appropriately interested in the election and completely uninterested in fashion, even gets it. We were talking about the various styles (and budgets) of Cindy McCain, Sarah Palin, and Michelle Obama - sorry, I'm just not that familiar with Jill Biden's closet - and he said, "but Cindy McCain can spend whatever she wants, it's her money and she's loaded; it's not Sarah Palin's money." Wow. *fist bumps*

"MY GOD!! They're a family of grifters!! I know how they're doing it, the hot one finds an elderly victim, then she seduces him with her "unfancy talk". Once he pulls out the checkbook, boom, out come the relatives and the old fart never had a chance."

  37. my thought exactly...

which is why i cringe every time i hear that Sarah Palin is an example of feminism in action.

I wish it was true... but if it is we are still at the stage of using sexual ploys and flirting to get ahead..

and i am just not willing to believe that.

or alternately.. Sarah Plain is the feminine example of the Peter Principle in action...

    even then...

if we have to be that poorly qualified to get ahead...

that negates any impact women could have.

tokenism just doesn't cut it for me.

now i am going to go soak my cranky head..

though i don't think that is going to improve things much.

This is about Palin the clueless...

She used an example today using studies with fruit flies as being a study that shouldn't be funded.

Little did she, her speech writer, and/or GOP science advisor know that fruit flies are used as one of the main animals in genetic studies (mainly because of their quick lifecycle).

Actually I have seen many scientific studies using fruit flies because I'm an armchair National Geographic and Science channel geek.

One of the genetic studies used in this science is to find medical solutions to autism, a subject she claims she is an expert on.

    11 more days (((sigh)))

CC - since McCain aides are quietly jumping ship left and right (multiple reports of resumes being received), I'm having a field day imagining what a speech writer might do to someone who hasn't stayed on point and is too senseless to notice anything wrong on the cuecards.

Then I remember that there are a lot of dirty tricks still left in the bag and we can't get too comfortable.

GHO good point, at this stage of the race, nothing would surprise me.

I do get some humor from the gaffs, I'm sure there easy to make, expecting mortal humans to remain perfect for 11 days will be pretty entertaining...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  41. JoB - to your point about flirtiness & sexual ploys, I really lost it when I saw the pictures of SP's tight skirts and high-heeled thigh-high boots.

CC - thanks for that info on the fruit flies. This reminds me of something I read on the mudflats blog about SP coming out against a proposition in CO (why one earth she would get involved with something like that...) and it happened to be about funding for developmentally disabled students. Does the woman ever read anything on her own??!!

I am really so fed up with the sneers and snide comments that are based on NO INFORMATION. I can always appreciate another point of view, even if I don't agree with it, but uninformed points of view - no tolerance!

I'm teaching my kids to back up their statements with the "why" and the rationale. They are surrounded by democrats so when my middle schooler says something like "Bush is the worst!" or, half-jokingly, "Can I egg a McCain sign?" (eidted to say, and of course I don't let him!) I make him explain to me why he thinks that way. Then remind him that it's fine to disagree as long as you do it respectfully. I'm sorry, I don't see that coming from the McCain campaign at all. The Obama campaign is not perfect but if you want to talk about the high road...

    Posted 3 years ago #
  42. Some time, some where we need to inject respect back into public life.

respect for other people's rights... respect for their opinions...

you are right to teach your children that they should understand why those are their opinions.

without thought we just respond to advertising...

unfortunately, that's what too many people are doing right now.

My only real complaint with this election is that we have heard too little from republicans who defend their position with thought.

    Posted 3 years ago #
  43. JoB you seem to be in a very deep mood today. I'm likin' it.

On that last statement, I have felt that way too.

  44. Cait..

i think i am very discouraged today.

I just heard someone say that Sarah Palin is filled with the holy spirit and it is the will of god that she win the election.

    No foolin.

That would make Obama the antichrist... as far as that person was concerned.

What ism would you call that?

How could anyone think that someone who has called forth the bogeymen of racism, socialism, communism, terrorism and whatever this last one is called be filled with the holy spirit?

Some days it is not so good to have seen so much of human foibles.

    i long for intellectual discourse.
