Orca's off of Alki

Amazingly a pod of Orcas (one of the J-pods I was informed) swam by Alki Point and into Elliot Bay.

It was amazing, one very small orca that spy hopped near us standing along the edge of the cement bulkhead, a young adult male with a very tall dorsal fin, a pod of around 8-12 whales overall.

A nice Sunday early evening treat!

It was a fabulous treat, wasn't it? I've never seen them come so close to shore here before.

(Anyone who is on Facebook can "like" Orca Network there, and get real time sighting reports from them as they come in. Seeing a post there is usually how I know when to look for them. They also post a lot of great articles on the latest research about local whales and issues important to their survival--I've learned a lot!)

  4. We get texts from a couple of local folks who are plugged into the network - and often watching for them themselves - and sometimes before Orca Network (which I love dearly - be sure to sign up for their nightly e-mail, which often has amazing pictures that don't turn up on their FB or website - but they are tracking whales for the entirety of Puget Sound and beyond).

When we do - as we did with this one today - we put it out instantly via Twitter and Facebook. If it had been earlier in the day I would have put it on the website too but when we got a call from Donna of The Whale Trail, when she was watching them on the west end of the Alki boardwalk, we literally ran out the door (I tweeted and FB'd while Patrick drove).

Sadly the 15 minutes it took to get from Upper Fauntleroy to Alki was too long and we missed them. Missed them the same time of day two days ago when they were close in at Lowman Beach. Sigh.

If you ever see them PLEASE text or call us - 206-293-6302 ... even if we somehow keep missing them, it's great to be part of the network helping get the word out ...

Thanks for the tip on the Orca Network... I just "liked" them. :)

I live on Beach Drive and vividly remember the first time I saw them: I was sitting on the couch by the window, talking on the phone with my mom in Germany, and all of a sudden I'm going, "Oh my God - there are whales swimming by my house!". My mom thought we had a bad connection, because she said, "Haha, I thought you said WHALES were swimming by your house...". It was so funnny. :)

Gee, Hooper, thanks for pointing out that very contextually significant error! You must be VERY smart!! I had NO IDEA that he meant concrete - I was so worried he was standing on wet cement!

just correcting a slight of typing that is an annoying mistake that even broadcasters routinely make that is even more annoying

  11. I missed them. I am jealous. I love watching the Orcas. Maybe I shoud have said Orcinus Orca.
Usually I see them up near Bellingham.
